My crazy skydiving instructor...
yoink replied to tumbleroll's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Tell him if the canopy wasn't safe to land AND you don't have enough altitude to cut away, you would perfrom a canopy transfer. See what he thinks of that. He'd say "what internet smartarse have you been talking to?" -
canopy for airborne acro? (not swooping)
yoink replied to Calvin19's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
For you? Yeah, maybe. The trouble is you'll get people with no paragliding experience buying Bobcats and going in under them because they're so different to fly than parachutes... The Bobcat, Swoop, even early Bullets & Nanos are much more like paragliders than parachutes in their handling and need to be treated as such. We've already got people buying parachute that are more than then can handle because they have mad skills. Now throw in 100sq ft canopies that react as twitchily as the Swoop does to harness input. -
The brake lines look pretty clear - at least there's no easily visible deflection of the tail. It looks like the cascade from the stabiliser is caught in a tension knot on the A or B lines to me.

People seem to find their own ways that work for them, although there are some good instructional videos around if you want, and I'm sure someone on your dz will show you a couple of times if you offer a beer or two. Personally, I find it helps to know what you're supposed to be looking for and then it'll get much easier with practice. For example, I know my sabre should have 4 groups of 4 suspension lines on each side, while the Crossfire is the same, except it only has 3 of the longest lines, the D lines, on each side. The material between the line groups on each side is what you're flaking while keeping the brakelines and tail out of the way. Practise, don't rush and try to keep everything symmetrical. You'll get it.

(R)STEERING LINE BROKE TODAY,,WHAT WOULD YOU DO.
yoink replied to vortexr1's topic in Safety and Training
3) Carry a hook knife? I'd much rather be trying this uneven flaring from full flight, rather than in half brakes. -
i know right! id love to see it but unfortunately for us all he "cant find it anymore" Sounds like it was fake. Unless he can show you, that's what I'd say. I've seen a lot of good fake videos. The one that convinces me that landing a wingsuit without a ramp is impossible is the one of the very, very, very low pull. YouTube That would be more impressive is he wasn't in a crumpled heap at the end of it...

Swede... but hey, it's all Europe, right. ;)

christ that film was bad. Thanks for destroying my childhood memories Hollywood. For a cheesy B-movie sci-fi film, I quite enjoyed the Mutant Chronicles.

Who do you think has more tandems? The DZO's, or the designers & manufacturers of the tandem systems? One of these says these types of stunts are a bad idea; if jump numbers and experience are what you're going on, you're backing the wrong horse. Do you think the tandem briefing includes a section on how much more dangerous doing these types of maneuvres are, rather than a 'typical' tandem? Do you think they give the student an informed choice? Hell, with 4 years in the sport and 350 skydives you trust those instructors and think what they're doing this is fine... what chance do you think a student has of understanding the risks and consquences involved? Can it be done? Obviously. That's not the same as 'should it be done'...

Have you seen that they're releasing a game that follows on from Avatar that uses the same objects to create the world in game as they did for the movie? Cameron says it'll be great for people that enjoy the film and want to investigate the world in their own way. Should be cool. Loved the Mass Effect story. Looking forward to the 2nd part.

If you've got to be hungover, you may as well be asleep for most of it!

It's a good idea not to stop drinking now until bedtime... afternoon hangovers are the worst.

Out of interest, is there any reason why no-contact formation flying shouldn't be done with tandems? - with an appropriate distance maintained. Stupidity of some of the moves in the videos aside, some shots of the time under canopy do make the video a bit more interesting for the student.

I was referring to UK rentals, where the renter commonly pays the local tax on the property, as well as providing their own contents & damage insurance. Typically, the landlords insurace only covers the building itself, as well as any provided fixtures & fittings. If it's in a contract that there will be monthly maintainance on a property, changing the locks without discussing it obviously isn't an option (although I'd still do it, and give the landlord new keys - if only to ensure the last tenants didn't take a copy when they left), but this is not typical in UK leases. Generally they're very hands-off landlords over there.
-
Change the locks ASAP. It will eventually come to light that you've done this, it's unavoidable unless you're really lucky, but then you simply apologise profusely and explain that you lost your keys a couple of days ago and 'here's your copy, I've just been so busy that I've forgotten to drop it in..." yada yada" I've done this on every rental house / apartment I've ever used, with no comeback except added security. Call me paranoid, but I don't like the possibility of other keys floating around to my place, and there's no legitimate reason why the landlord would ever find out about it. "How do you know I've changed the lock? I certainly didn't receive any notice that you'd want entrance..." The only situation this doesn't work to your favour is if a pipe bursts or something of that nature while you're at work, but then to my mind, that's a small risk.

I don't know anything about field parties. We used to call those 'raves'.

Yep. Not sure how it is possible to fuck up on this scale. They really screwed over serious PC gamers. Who are: 1) Now the minority of gamers a developer aims for. 2) More difficult to program for, given the varying specs of machines. 3) The most demanding customer base (wanting modding ability, dedicated servers, cheap or free additional content etc). 4) the most likely / able to pirate the game. I have to admit, I can kinda see the business decision to put the majority of the support and development into consoles.

Yes, for the student... I doubt scaring the guy witless counts as his idea of 'fun'. If you're going to be a professional skydiver, be a professional at it.
-
Interesting idea, and certainly useful on hop n pops or dedicated canopy-working dives, but I'm not sure I like the idea on a standard dive with 20 people around unless everyone is using this pattern. Like always, a mix of patterns is a bad thing, and this one creates the potential for canopies to be coming into point C (the standard entry point for a pattern) head-to-head, as usually people will be approaching from the side of the landing area, rather than over it. That just feels like a bad idea...

I'm going to revise my opinion from DGIT to Troll. Good effort.

not allowed fireworks out here - apparently it sets the state on fire.

That's fine right up until the point where someone cuts you off at 50ft and you panic, bury a toggle and hit the ground after your canopy does because you've never turned low before... Really sketchy advice in my opinion. You don't know when something like that will happen. It might be on the very next jump. Being under an unforgiving wing because you were going to be cautious with it for the next 50 jumps becomes utterly useless at that point if you don't already have the skills in the bag you need to survive.

It's not so much your canopy choice that is worrying people now (although that's still a concern...) it's the attitude you're showing and how it carries over to all aspects of the sport that's the major worry. It's not just canopies that kill you. This attitude of jumping at stuff before you're ready because you don't understand or aren't willing to progress safely or because you believe in your own superiority will lead you to kill yourself equally well doing wingsuits before you're ready, VRW, big ways, BASE - whatever floats your boat. When people are talking about Bounce Bingo in relation to you, it's pretty much a final sanity check. You might want to search for what the term means and when it's used... I'm done here. I hope you make it, honestly. If not, at the very least this thread will be used in the same way Ted Nelson's is... to try and educate future newbies who think they're above the curve.
