  1. I wasn't sure whether this belonged here or in the "Mudslinging" thread. Probably both. From CNN :- A November win by Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry would put the United States at risk of another "devastating" terrorist attack, Vice President Dick Cheney told supporters Tuesday. Kerry's running mate, Sen. John Edwards of North Carolina, responded by calling Cheney's comments "un-American."
  2. We were taught the same 'hands on helmet' procedure. However, we were told that once the static line was cut we were on our own. The risk of the student pulling his reserve or the AAD (or AOD in those days) firing was too big for the J/M to follow the student and try and pull for him. Also, S/L's are despatched from 3500 which does not leave the J/M a lot of altitude to work with. What is the 'official' procedure these days?
  3. I am equally astounded. However, the following is from CNN on Bush's 2% bounce Despite the perception among some observers that this is an election driven by issues, more of those interviewed said that the leadership qualities and personal characteristics of the two candidates were more important than their stands on the issues.
  4. Is that background not from Vodacom's "skydiving baby" ad? Good job!
  5. The wearing of headscarves is not merely symbolic of the Islamic faith. It serves a practical purpose (much like the burka) in line with the teachings of the Koran. Many females the world over wear headscarves, for a variety of different reasons. It is my opinion that the headscarf is in fact even less of a symbol than the star of David or a crucifix. France should not in this instance back down to terrorists, but I think the ban on headscarves is a counter-productive and 'dangerous' law.
  6. Thank you for the nice sentiments, Lori. As for Phelps, I'm over him! He is a brilliant young swimmer with a bright future ahead of him and I will follow his career with interest. A bit of irony regarding this whole issue:- To my knowledge three of the four South Africans in that relay team are on sholarships...... IN THE US of A! The youngster won more medals by himself than the entire SA team did. Well done! That goes for the whole US Olympic team too - good show!
  7. Do you have any Afrikaans in you? Would you like some?
  8. GWB get asked to do the closing ceremony speech at the Olympics. So on the night he gets up, walks to the podium and starts to read: "Oh..... oh..oh......oh........oh". An aide rushes up to him and whispers in his ear: "Mr. President, those are the Olympic rings. Your speech is there, below the rings."
  9. Just to combine the two themes of this thread, I heard two different news readers (one on BBC World and the other on a local radio station) pronounce the artist's name as Munk and Munsh respectively. Out of curiousity, which is it?
  10. And you are curious as to the 'glee' ?
  11. I can understand you being happy for SA... But why be glad that a young man (With mad skill) that has worked hard as hell (Harder than most people EVER will for ANYTHING) for trying to reach big? And why be happy he fails? That seems cheap and petty. Ron, I am the first to admit that it is cheap and petty. My initial reaction was a knee-jerk to what I perceived as arrogance. Read my second post again....

  13. I can attest to that. I was really looking forward to the Phelps/Thorpe contests but when Phelps started his 8-medal stories I could not help but think how arrogant that was. When we (SA) took the gold I was obviously very proud and excited (and surprised!) but it was also with glee that I took note of the Amrican team's poor performance. I also could not help thinking 'It serves you right' when Phelps only got bronze in the freestyle last night.
  14. As I suggested in my earlier response, in my opinion your stated position in this thread is absurd, and now looks more like a troll than anything else. (Bold added by me.)
  15. Horny Gorilla.... Spanking..... Penetration.... Use those three in one sentence and you will have a hard time convincing a whuffo that you are talking about skydiving.
  16. This line of reasoning is, in my not-so-humble opinion, totally absurd. Are you honestly suggesting that, for example, if the US intelligence services had obtained information that may have prevented 9/11, through torture, they should not have used it? Absurd.
  17. I don't know if our's is the fifth one, but I frequently see South Africa's solitary JU52 flying over Johannesburg. cool, there is a 6th one then... More on the JU52 From the above site:- Examples were still flying in South Africa and Switzerland in recent years.

  19. I have seen several references to one BASE jumper in particular who uses pretty young things to pack for him, but to start using them to winch you up a tower????
  20. I think that is an extremely accurate observation. From what I have read, the American forces in Vietnam initially approached the conflict with a 'battle field' mentality because, apart from Korea, that was what they knew. The weapons, composition of fighting units, air support and log etc all had to change quite dramatically to suit the new circumstances. In Iraq it is different again - desert warfare on the one hand and urban, 'house-to-house' on the other. The 'enemy' is frequently just one man with an RPG, surrounded by local population, with the good/neutral folk indistinguishable from the bad. Napalm just won't cut it!
  21. I suspect that Morgan may be a tad put out by the fact that you have met the women of your dreams....
  22. I know little about true ballistics but I did do competitive shooting (in the military) for many many years. We used the R1 (derived from the Belgian FN) with standard NATO 7.62 ammo. We routinely shot from 500 yards and the rifle and ammo proved extremely accurate. When our military converted to the R4 (which can be compared to the Ak-47 but with 5.56 ammo), we battled to score properly from 200 yards. The reason was simple:- the much lighter projectile would start tumbling after about 150 yards and then it was potluck! Of course, the R4 was not designed for long range shooting. At the time we were heavily involved in the conflict in South West Africa (Namibia) and Angola, where close quarter/ semi jungle style combat was more the order of the day. The smaller, lighter R4 was much more practical. (Although it could never take out a terr by shooting through a tree like the R1 could.
