Interesting subject Lot's of urban myth's about rounds and opinions expressed by people who have little real world knowledge of the subject This topic is discussed in detail in the Skydiving History & Trivia forum in a couple of different threads. Suggest start there for folks that never jumped them or have limited knowledge. The referenced forum IMO is the real deal and discuss's the good & bad and limit's of jumping rounds and why some people like them and some didn't. BTW why jump rounds? Easy at the time that was all there was. How may jumps on rounds? 500, how many mals? Zero Injuries: owee on ankle due to backing up on landing in excessive winds. Pilot error, Broken ankle on other leg the next week jumping in high winds ended up in the corner and doing a downwinder. Favored the ankle with the owee on landing. Pilot error! Squares are nice but the injuries related to pilot error are much more severe. Not a excuse not to jump squares just don't screw up! Who says skydivers are stupid we invented a whole new way to kill ourselves. R.I.P. Old fart R.I.P.

To keep it simple I think why folks and DZ's choose not to join USPA have already been discussed. Are their non USPA DZ's? yes but IMO not enough Will a non USPA US jumper be able to jump at a USPA dropzone. Since I haven't been to every DZ in the US I can't say for sure. From the USPA DZ's i've been to the answer is hell no unless you shell out x bucks at the DZ for a temporary membership. IMO saying that the reason some DZ's and jumpers choose not to join USPA is money is a over simplification. Consider the cost of skydiving and the cost of USPA membership. The money saved by not joining is chump change. The advertising benifit of a USPA DZ to be able to attract tandems & AFF vs a non USPA is obvious. Just check out the front page of their websights and read what some of them have to same about non USPA dropzones. this is in spite of the fact that following the BSR's on either type of DZ is done on the honor system and not verified/spot checked by USPA. Ever lost your cut-away equipment?

Thanks terry I stand corrected. Always listen to your rigger. Effects of chemicals on your gear is one of the things their required to know. They have to sign your packing card a big responsiabilty that can come back to bite them. IMO a conservative rigger is better than a good old boy. My technique was based on monkey see monkey do, and I don't know the qualifications of the first monkey. R.I.P. -
Dress for success and do what the locals do. Look at the bright side no one is shooting at you, and if worst comes to worst you can always leave. Just start planning your escape now so when you leave it's on your terms and in the meantime you can always raise sheep to nurture during those long cold weekends when your stuck at home. If a guy can keep a lion in a apartment in NYC a couple of sheep shouldn't be a problem. R.I.P.

Lany Interesting subject I wonder what the percentage of parents are abusive my gueess is it's huge. My brother and i were in a challenging situation while growing up, but we both left home ASAP really didn't have much of a choice. No regrets, never looked back, and started to prepare ourselves for the future. I guess we were fortunate that our abuse wasn't physical or sexual which I guess would be harder to put behind us. I haven't gone back in 38 years, no regrets, no hate, just count myself lucky that I survived Nam, went to college on uncle sams dime and don't have to deal with my parent ever again. My brother had children and he felt that he needed to reestablish contact with our parent for the sake of his kids, so they would know their Granny like a normal family. He was a hurting puppy for a long time because of the continued exposure during the holidays. He finally had enough and broke it off. After about 5 yr's of therapy his group suggested he confront his abuser and try and make amends because "she's your mom". To my surprise he took their advice and paid her a face to face visit. After about 5 minutes he realized that the belly of the beast hadn't changed and barely escaped with sanity and never went back. What causes parents to be abusive? Some were abused themselve's, were exposed to serious shit WW2, mental illness, substance abuse, ego? Don't know and don't care not my problem. My responsiabilty is to be a good human being, and provide for my family. As long as I can do that whats in the past is in the past. I won't let things that I have no control over bother me or waste my time. I'm not saying "just get over it" in the real world it isn't that easy there's no quick fix. But we each have to find out what works for us to deal with our past so we don't continue to be draged down by our past or repeat the mistakes that we experienced. People that haven't walked a mile in our shoes will never understand and I don't even try to explain. Just keep on truckin. R.I.P.

This is america we have every right to be as stupid as we want to be. At least the mine was inert. I live by a airport that's the gateway to Alaska, where there's wilderness, very cold large tree's, people have to cut wood for fuel to build fire's in their stove's to stay warm in the winter. A female passenger was disapointed when she was not allowed to take her chain saw with her as carry on baggage onto the airplane. The chain was on the machine and the fuel tank had gasoline in it. With the gasoline in the machine it couldn't even be checked in as baggage. R.I.P.

>>The Washington Post came out clearly as an instrument of truth in the Watergate affair, and Nixon was proven to be a liar. >> If Nixon was a liar what was Mr Clinton just confused about the definition of sex? Mr Reagon had some medical problems befor he ever retired from the white house, I wonde what he did at whirte house meetings. GW already raised $120,000,000 for his reelection campaign. No comment on the last election or his military record, his personal wealth etc. As far as the ex Sec of the treasury wasn't he the goofball wall street attorney that wanted his office elevated to a cabinet position? Truth, honesty, intelligence, from a politican? Jimmy Carter gets my vote. The rest imo were just "team players". I support our troops, but there was a serious FUBAR in military planning to rid Iraq from the Butcher of Bagdad. Dumsfeld IMO reminds me of Bagdad Bob. We know the press is confused about skydiving, and USPA is USPA. Why is this any different? The media will do their thing and the white House via the PIO & spinmeisters will do theirs. Lets just settle down support our enlisted troops and their families and watch history in the making. Don't like whats going on? So what? vote GWB in spite of his reelction campaign funds out and elect another politican like Mr Carter to replace him. To bad so sad ain't going to happen. Lets just relax and smoke a cigar. R.I.P.

If the driver is a real action type guy, and he had confidence in his tandem driver. Then the tandem is like glorified roller coaster. If the guy races and he's driving inch's from the wall at 100 whatever MPH then he can see the speed. It's hard to get ground rush opening at whatever alti tandems open at, in reguler free fall if theirs is a video person they are falling at the same rate so other than the wind blowing in your face IMO it is a amusement ride for the rider. I don't watch many tandems land but I don't think they usually do high performance landings so there's really no rush there either "for a action guy" So IMO his conclusions are based on the info he recieved Hows a action guy going to get pumped when 90 year olds do tandems? Seeing someone swoop a pond in a rocket ship and drag a toe for a nice rooster tail maybe that could get the action guy's attention. Off course it would take him a long time to get to the point where he could drag a toe if he didn't hurt himself first. If he got hurt then he couldn't drive his go fast car for while. Just my opinion R.I.P.

FWIW some folks write their phone # or DZ# on the freebag bridle followed by "reward". Good news bad news if it lands in the wrong place "they" know where to find you if there's any damages. But that's what USPA insurance is for right? R.I.P. -
>>on a side note, who here ever put thier undie on thier head when they were little (or even last week) and ran around the house... i did and i know there are more of you here too..... Just my opinion which don't mean nothing. After the first 2 minute's I stopped reading your attached pesonnal E-mail but IMO that was in poor form. Beware some skydiving women can be very nasty in response to their past relationships. Talking shit in the boy's locker room is one thing but damn what if the pink mafia surf this forum. Hope you didn't piss off any of the local women at kapow if they read this crap. If you go to a boogie sleep on your stomach and watch out for women with superglue. Second thought sleepong on your stomach might not help sleep in your car with the doors locked. Whatever R.I.P. R.I.P.

Anything different about a Helicopter jump?
slug replied to AggieDave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Blackhawks, way overpowered climb like a rocket Chinooks "the only aircraft known to man that can have a midair collision with itself. Nice tailgate, fast rate of climb, older models leak hydraulic oil like a pig, take baby step no runing or launching a tube. Huey's a classic we were told to keep our legs inside the bird on liftoff. If it has to land real quick the skids will collapse and your legs will get hurt. Most jumps were fom 12.5 but some chopper pilot's, and some choppers don't like going above "x" altitude in case the rubber band breaks they can auto rotate and land unless their to high and they run out of oil propr to landing. Then the bades stop turning and the chopper will fall like a rock. Btw we got about 75 jumps out of these birds and they never took off staight up or hovered on exit. Something about the loss of efficency and extra power required. Enjoy R.I.P. BTW $1/day . -
Zenister Sorry about you finding out there's no Santa Claus, Easter Rabbit, ot the tooth fairy. It not healthy to go thru life bitter or pissed off, however now you know the rules of the game so now you have a equal chance to win in the game of life. I try and give most people a fair chance to screw up once but the screw up rate is very high. So know I just have the attitude you know everyone is a asshole except you and me and I'm not sure of you. After being confused for a long time why peope screw with people I learned a lot by watching my three dogs. They were all the same size but the alpha male controled the other two by restricting access to the other dogs food and water supply, bedroom etc. People are the same way. I believe A lot of people feel insecure so the make themselve feel superior by belittleing others. There also is this thing about power and control if you let them they will. After a while you'll be able detect who these people are real quick. First time same on them second time shame on you! You don't have to be bitter or paranoid just beware! I've had the same best buddy (the wife) for thirty years. IWe treat each other as equals Now I only have two dogs the alpha male is gone. I still get screwed by a leache once in a while but it's rare & never a surprise once you look for the signs they stick out like a sore thumb. I never get srewed by the same leach twice. No sceaming or yelling wailing or flailing. I just immediatly minimize my exposure. Trust no one and believe nothing and you won't be disapointed! But of course you can trust me can I borrow a dime? Start looking around at the clique's, and the sweet young things and male dogs at the DZ. Life's a game it's your choice if you want to play, just be prepared to lose once in a while and pay up. Or watch the action and enjoy!

I'm just guessing but When we lived in missouri we could track the weather reports coming across colorado and kansas and have a chance of guessing when & what the weather was going to be like when the front moved thru our area. These days with the computers and data base's, Satalite info available to the weather service my guess is the weather people look at their cheat sheet punch all that weather stuff temp. pressure etc into the computer compare it with the historical data and then come up with a WAG of the probability of the weather pattern following it's most probable route. Like living in tornado alley, tracking hurricans etc. That crap starts somewhere and ends up somewhere else. I think back in the pre satalite days the pilots would get a weather debrief when they landed and the info would be relayed back to their point of departure with adjustments for changes in stuff that could be actualy measured. R.I.P.

>>(I don't see a reason for jumping a non collapsible PC in this day and age).>> How abour already have a non collapsible PC and don't jump a rocket ship. IMO there are two advantages to continue using the old fart PC. Don't have to remember to cock it + one less mal toworry about, PC already paid for R.I.P.

John Your looking at a bell curve. "There aren't bad dogs just bad dog owners". Guns don't kill people, the person pulling the trigger does. I think if there was a analysis of gun death's like skydiving we would find out that the accidental death's were preventable if the guns were stored in a responsiable manner. Murder, suicide, guns are convenient but if they weren't available there are lots of other ways to get the job done. Do I own a gun? yes. Is it loaded? no Have I ever carried it evewn though I have a CWP no. Do I ever point my gun at something I don't want to shoot? no. Do I ever put my finger on the trigger of a "unloaded" gun? no. Do I ever shoot my gun? yes so I can hit what I'm aiming at. I shoot my gun at a gun range and I don't load it until i'm at the fireing line. After I'm done I make sure the gun is unloaded but always assume that the gun is loaded until I verify it. Once the bullet leaves a gun to bad so sad. Pepper spray is a nice deterent. If I feel that I'm going someplace wher I need a gun to protect myself I don't need to go there. However if we have a national emergency where peoples children are dying from lack of food and water and you have it. Some of them people (bell curve) will cut your throat for a glass of water. Under those condition's there will not be enough police, national guard etc to protect everyone. In that case the bad guy's will go after the easy targets. I refuse to be one. R.I.P.

Had a friend was married four times used the same ring for ea bride and got married wearing the same suit ea time. BTW he was a skydiver and had been married so many times he had his marriage/divorce system down pat. No pooling of assets. His was his, hers was hers Beware: Won't work in a community property state R.I.P.

[ Yes, my jumpmaster had 300 jumps, and I thought that if I ever achieved that lofty level of skill, I would really be something. And nowadays, at 300 jumps, you're still looked upon as somewhat of a rookie... I think I'm a little older so the guy who taught us to jump had 65 jumps and knew everything about skydiving. Of course your correct about trying to find someone to hold tension, That's what s.o. where for. We didn't have the luxery of anything to attach a nail to so we used a piece of rope on the car bumper for the crown lines and a large screw driver or car jack handle in the ground holding the leg strap's. We were amazed the first time we saw someone packing a square without tension. Damn thats never been done befor are you sure thats will work? Bottom line it was still a lot of fun! The learning curve was just a little flatter but who cared we were all learning together. When folks say they only have 300 jumps I tell them that's a lot of jumps! R.I.P

>>Lots of people like static line. I've never even seen a static line jump in real life. I think the only reason it's still done is that it's cheaper for the dropzones>> IMO static line doesn't make the DZ as much money as AFF. If you got lots of bucks and want to be a great skydiver in the shortest amount of time than AFF, tunnel time and a private coach is the only way to go. Almost forgot buy your gear now so you don't have to jump that crappy rental gear. The DZO will appreciate your desire to excel and try and give you special attention to insure that you meet your goals. OTOH static line is a less expensive rush, and will end up costing you less money which you can spend on other things like skydiving and buying gear. But greatness will take a little longer Either way you'll get a buzz and will enjoy the sport, it will just take a little longer to be a really great skydiver by going the s/l route. R.I.P.

These are strange times I don't think any kind of white powder would be a good idea. However those nice aromatic car freshners that some folks hang from their rear view mirrors come in can come in handy. I bought half a dozen and taped them under a guy's desk, chair, drawers, Damn anyone who walked into the guy's office started gagging and had tears runnng down their eye's. The guy got used to it. A sweet get even technique I came up with was a women who was a major pain in the butt. She was trying everything to lose weight. Pills, weight watchers, liquids lunch's etc.
