Reserve Pilot Chute Holes (Stunts Rig)
usskydiver replied to carbonezone's topic in Gear and Rigging
Tami, Here's a theory and whether it fits depends on the size of the holes. I've seen this happen on round reserves that had improperly stored and an ant or ants had gotten into the reserve, died, and the acids in their bodies had eaten through 6 layers of F-111. Just a theory. Rusty Vest from PD is very smart on stuff like that, you may want to give him a call. Tim Maggot FAA Master Rigger -
Rob, good point, but what the letter does not cover is how to stow the bridle and reserve bridle stowage for the Javelin has changed a couple of times. I called Mike Fury (sp) at Altico a couple of weeks ago about that exact question and he related that when closing both the bottom and top flaps over the reserve pilot chute he stowed the bridle from side to side like the "original" Javelin instructions called for. I also found that using SunPath's current recommendation of a 2 1/8" reserve closing loop worked perfectly. This assumes that the reserve canopy and reserve contain size are proportionate and proper. Ken, The Bogy was manufactured by FTS and later APS. I never jumped a 178 but did have a 200 as a main. SkyONE has extensive experience with the company and their products. Chuckie....???? Tim Maggot

jumping a Factory Diver without the face shield..
usskydiver replied to Viking's topic in Relative Work
Lips would have been under the bottom part of the helmet...And Goggles provide just about as much eye protection as the shield...I have hit people hard enough to make them bleed even though they wore a full face helmet...And I have seen it many more times. Ron, you should exercise more control of your flying surfaces :) he-he..see you at the Nationals!! Tim Maggot -
Please be careful when jumping with Tandem's
usskydiver replied to Rdutch's topic in Safety and Training
Great post Ray! My rules are as such (and follow a compilation of stuff I've read over the years). If I know your skills, you may jump with me after I've briefed you. If I don't know your skills, you may exit before me (I'll determine the separation). What happens to a tandem student happens to me 1/10 of a second later, and I love me! -
Chucky, No reason to. The Air Force STARS (the official name) has been shelved due to the war(s) and lack of guys (they're too busy dealing death). The team was made up exclusively of Combat Controllers and Pararescuemen. It should get restarted upon termination of "activities." See you tonight for cockatilio's (unless the Ranch deluxe is rockin'). Tim Maggot

Question: Highest Pull Altitude?
usskydiver replied to Kramer's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Exited at 25,000, 3 second delay (Military HAHO), long, cold canopy ride. Tim Maggot -
Andy, You mentioned this was a purchase of used gear. Another factor to consider would be pilot chute age, size, and materials. An e-mail to PD and Mirage would not be out of order. A phone call to John LeBlanc or Rusty Vest is well worth the cost to get you sorted out. Tim Maggot

Downsizing canopies: why is smaller better?
usskydiver replied to RippedCord's topic in Gear and Rigging
ODB, It all comes down to what YOU want to do. There are many who will make the conditional statement "when you downsize" but it doesn't need to apply to you unless you want it to. I'm about 200 out the door and love my Velocity 103. My wife is -
New Skydiver's Question...About Reserve Chute

It's normally about 3 weeks and $260 if you need batteries (which you should) unless it fails a test and has to go back to Germany (like mine did on it's 1st 4 year. If it has to go back to Germany then it's 6-8 weeks. Tim Maggot

Skyone, that is a very bold statement. The "Lovely and talented" Dr. Rose and I are missing you. Tim Maggot

Tandem Instructor Poll: Instructor Jumpsuits
usskydiver replied to slotperfect's topic in Instructors
Custom Michigan Suit w/ tapered legs, padded shoulders, cordura knees and butt. Tim Maggot -
For AFF and fun jumps, 1000' and for tandems 2,500' as per TK Donle at the RWS and the tandem manual. Tim Maggot

Our SOP for military night jumps (and we tend to use these at Raeford because they make total sense)is: Red chem light on chest strap or main lift web. Green chem light on back of rig. White strobe on helmet. Chem light on altimeter. Rationale: If you see red it's oncoming traffic and it's time to turn right. If you see green you may follow that traffic (with caution). I like my strobe pointing up because it illuminates the canopy without interfering with my night vision. Don't be cheap on the strobe, they will last for years and have multiple applications. Helmet with flip-up lens, any preferences?
usskydiver replied to pkasdorf's topic in Gear and Rigging
The Oxygn A3 from Sky Systems is my helmet of choice for RW. I have a Sky Systems Hurricaine on the way for AFF (our DZ requires hard helmets for instructors) but still wear a frap hat for tandems. My A3 has a ton of jumps and a ton of tunnel time on it and is in perfect condition. Tim Maggot -
Hmm..I'll have to try the feet together thing on my Velocity because it definitely goes wherever it wants to on opening. Sometimes I think I'm jst along for the ride while it's "seeking" it's heading. Tim Maggot

My wife (Colbrodie) has an early Sabre 2 (S/N less than #100) and has never had a "severe/uncontrolled opening." Please remember there are several factors that contribute to the opening of a canopy. Pilot chute size/construction, line stow size/tension, slider placement, body position, etc. The Sabre 2 is an excellent all around canopy but any parachute can open severely/uncontrollably if the basics are ignored. Yes, 2. First was a double malfunction due to incorrect EP's and the 2nd was a low hook turn (toggle) I was the first to him and was followed within 2 minutes by a Doc, ER nurse, EMT/P, EMT/I (all jumpers). All we could do was unfold him and open an airway and start an IV until LifeFlight arrived. He passed that evening in the hospital. Both very sad as I feel in my heart that a lack of training and education contributed significantly to both. Tim Maggot

I tend not to look at the persons rating but at his/her profile, specifically, ratings, gear jumped and jumps number to quantify a persons comments. While I've been lurking for a couple of years, I seldom post drivel on top of existing drivel so therefore care less what my rating is. There are those who post a lot and offer something in each, skyONE is an example, and there are others. Tim

Another price guide that I've seen used is subtract $100 per year AND $1 per jump. Just my observation. PS: That does NOT apply to CYPRES these days due to the strengthening Mark/Euro. Tim

Then get your butt out here and do some work, Monkey Lip. My back is getting tired of pulling your weight!! PS: I miss playing with your kids too!! Tim
