Okay, so roughly two thirds of the general population know what basalt is - it appears many of you hav more than a passing association with it - that does my heart good.... So it stands to reason that a professor of geography should know what basalt is. One of my former geology students is taking the intro geography course to fulfill her basic requirement and came by this morning. Apparently this professor (and I mean full professor - no piddly assistant prof like myself) has been teaching his students that basalt is just a fine grained sandstone. Now that I know 2/3 of the populace know basalt - I'm going to light him up. He also told them that an earthquake and a tsunami are the same thing... I thought it was pretty bad I have to teach basic math and english in my courses instead of geology and physics (which I would much rather do) but now I've got to contend with faculty teaching the wrong stuff!!! This is my all time favorite question... (did you know that?) The sky is blue because of a principle called Rayleigh Scattering... essentially the light from the sun that doesn't pass straight through the atmosphere is refracted such that the light that passes through the atmosphere at the higher angles is blue (although there are actually more UV then blue we just can't see the UV with our eyes...) I'm going to have to slap your hand on this one.... Yes Rayleigh scattering is the mechanism, but the sky is blue because the chemistry of the atmosphere is dominated by molecular nitrogen. Replace the nitrogen with say - carbon dioxide - rayleigh scattering is still occurring but the sky will be yellow. Make methane the dominant species - rayleigh scattering is still occurring but we would have an orange sky. Turns out the natural frequency of molecular nitrogen is in the blue - uv range and that is why it scatters the blue wavelengths preferentially. Actually, nitrogen scatters violet the most but our eyes pick up blue better. Jump. Scars remind us that the past is real
