w/o googling, my understanding is that it was a concession to striking railroad workers in the mid to late 1800s (?). And it just stuck. Now onto google.... Edit to add:Yep - Grover Cleveland in 1894 signed the bill to create labor day to appease the nations workers after his heavy handed handling of striking railroad workers in Chicago.
