How many times and how many different threads are you going to post this? One posting in one thread should be sufficient. - Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

Putting a camera on my helmet for the first time

Agree with these two postings wholeheartedly... "Talk to the CCI and let him/her handle it" This person will better communicate the potential hazards and create a less attacking/defensive environment. If it was me jumping with a newbie (Coaching) and someone with 60 jumps lurked us without me knowing, ESPECIALLY after telling him/her that this was a 2 way with a newbie, then there would have been a confrontation for sure... - Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

How to learn to pack chutes . . .
AFFI replied to MotherGoose's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There may be some miscommunication here regarding learning to pack and what a packing class is. Someone stated earlier – what could be easier right? Learning how to pack is something we all learn as an ongoing process; we trade knowledge and techniques all the time for free on the packing room floor. Set Brakes, Set Slider, Cock PC Roll, Fold and Stuff – that is packing. Easy… and everyone does it a little different. A good packing class that is organized structured and following a laid out curriculum is more than just “Set Cock Roll and Fold”. It is learning how the gear works, the difference between and A line and a control line, how to look for problems with the gear that might need a riggers attention, how to make and change out closing loops and more. When a student walks away from a good packing class they should know more about how the gear works, not just “Set Cock Roll and Fold”. When I was on “Level 8’s” (student status), if there was a 3 to 4 hour long structured packing class for $30 available to me I would have taken it. I am not a super experienced instructor as I am only in my 5th year and have only around 400 actual instructional jumps so my next statement comes from that limited amount of experience. 100% of the students I have had the pleasure of working with always perform and relax better after taking a structured packing class because they understand how the gear works and their confidence in it increases along with their awareness. That is why we encourage our students to take the packing class early on in the course, so they will be more knowledgeable about the gear and in turn will be more confident in freefall. Knowledge dispels fear… - Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat… -

OOOH I like that idea! I've hop n poped other student's student pack just to show them they are indeed doing it right, but that is a nice idea. Teaching in exchange for 5 pack jobs means that the students are being charged $25 worth of labor - so it is still in the category of "charging". - Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat… -

A student Forum is a pretty good idea on the surface. Instruction is done in person, one on one with students and different DZ’s have different training philosophies. If a student is learning online they might be receiving information that is contradictory to the instruction they are receiving in person at their respective DZ. This has caused problems for me in the past when I am teaching a specific method that is conducive to our training program with our gear and the student I am working with says – “yeah, but online I learned that it should be done a different way”. It is more difficult to erase what they learned online and re-train, I would much rather have a student who does not have prior knowledge that may be specific to the training method other than the one I am teaching. That is why so many times a student will ask for advice here in these forums and the most common response is to ask and listen to their instructors. One of my pet peeves is when a student does receive guidance online by skydivers who are not qualified to train skydivers in the first place much less online with someone they do not know and whose progression in the training method they are learning in is unknown as well. Advice and instruction to students should be kept in person between a licensed instructor and the student. - Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…

When is someone going to hit a plane in FF again?
AFFI replied to recovercrachead's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
You are correct sir/madam... The bickering is what individuals strive for though. It is also hard to tell from written words what is bickering and what is not. I think people mistake many helpful posting for bickering and they shoot back defensively - thus creating more bickering. First Off: You have a great question and it is fantastic that you want to learn more about this topic. Why? Because this issue has been discussed in-depthzilla ad-nauseam not to mention that it is a rule/policy of DZ.com. (Use existing threads on your topic to continue a discussion rather than starting a new one.). That is exactly why there is a search function, so those that have not read about a topic can easily gain access to the information. It was not that long ago since this issue was at the fore-font and discussed thoroughly form a variety of diversified opinions. Then what you should have done (DZ.com Forum Rules and Policies)is a search on the topic. Then, after adding your comments the thread would have been brought to the top, thus placing it in front of everyone’s eyes again. I did not create the rules and policies of this forum but I imagine this rule was put into place to reduce repetitive postings that complicate the system which in turn make it more difficult to conduct searches because there are multiple threads on the same topic. It would make searches easier if people complied with this policy. A month from now someone is going to actually perform a search on this topic and get bogged down because they have to read many multiple threads rather than a single repository of information. This is one rule I wished was enforced and complied with more. The Forum Rules and Policies are found here: http://dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=142088 This one had been locked: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1049154;search_string=45%20degree%20rule;#1049154 (Note the Last entry) Mykel AFF-I10 Skydiving Priorities: 1) Open Canopy. 2) Land Safely. 3) Don’t hurt anyone. 4) Repeat…
