Feel too scared to continue
jumprunner replied to JenBubbles's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Wow, sounds like you had a rough ride, congratulations on getting through it. Fear aint an easy thing to deal with for anyone. I was just thinking about something last night. There are only a few skydiving fatalities per the amount of jumpers and jumps that take place, just like there are only a few fatalities in commercial airplane accidents per the amount of airplanes and flights that take place. So skydiving does put you in a pretty dangerous position, no doublt about it. So does commercial flying. Lets say for now that there are more skydiving fatalities and accidents than commercial flying produces. So he who relies on statistics should be convinced that skydiving is a bad idea in comparison to commercial flying. If a commercial aircraft is going down, you might have a cool head about it, realize that panicking does not do any good, and executing emergency procedures will save your life. Thats fine in that situation, only problem is, there really isnt anything you can do, other than to sit there and die. There isnt any emergency procedures for you to take, other than fasten your seatbelt, which probably wont do much good when the plane crashes. Skydiving...there is ALWAYS something you can do, and you NEVER just have to "sit there and wait to die". You always have the opportunity to fight for your life. Maybe you will live, and maybe you wont, but it isnt a helpless situation. Some people may feel more comfortable with skydiving than commercial flying simply because of this, disregarding any statistics. There are a lot of people who fly commercial, but only a very few who jump, because most people feel much more threatened when it comes to skydiving than they would when it comes to flying. Now, my opinion? Give me a choice, and Id rather jump. Commercial aircraft are extremely dangerous, survivability in a crash is almost non-existant, they are subject to terrorist activity, security is very lax, and the airlines could care less about the safety of their passengers. They only want to make a little more money, and thats all they care about. This is just my own opinion, but I consider skydiving much safer than commercial flying, and if I have to go somewhere, I would much rather drive if possible. There are so many people that will board a plane without even thinking about the dangers, but so few who will skydive thinking about nothing but the dangers. -
Very cool pic.

Tandem Masters - Leg lock or not to leg lock?

Thats why TMs make the big bucks, the shit you have to put up with with some people. My first jump I was suffeciently nervous enough to do exaxtly what I was told, and made it easy on the TM. But I still had to pay for what shit others pull. -
Did someone steal your credit card number or your credit card? Inquiring minds want to know...

Commentary to the pic: Very nice body position, are her hands on her handles for some reason? Looks like she's mocking a cutaway/reserve pull. Just wondering. Wow! You have handles right next to your 3 rings? Dude, she's pointing, sorta. I cant tell where her hands were its not that clear in the picture.

Sorry, but I have this one beat. This chick was a bungie jumper: Bungie Chick: Well, on a bungie cord, you dont have to worry about getting killed because the bungie cord stops the fall. Reply: Thats what we use parachutes for. Q: But, what happens if the parachute doesnt open? A: You have a reserve and you depoy it. Q: But, what if the reserve doesnt open? A: Thats what we use bungie cords for, so you can bounce back up to the plane and try it again! -
Bwahhhhhhhh I'll only tell ya what we've named it....in person. That photo is actually an ad shot for SDA. OMG my mother will be mortified! Nope....he has his own. And you can now prepare yourself to be flown...like a cheap kite BB All I have to say about this is...will you marry me???

Makes sense. You know when they used hangings as a death sentence, the ropes job was to kill quickly by snapping the victims neck forward, thereby breaking his neck immediately. Now I know having a rope around your neck and wearing a harness are two different things, but, the motion of your head snapping forward seems to be the same. -

?I DO think that if I ever have to do a terminal velocity reserve opening again, I'm going to tuck my chin down against my chest before opening so I don't crank my neck as badly. " Are you sure about that? Not that Im trying to argue with you, but I have a hard time seeing how that would help. Arent you supposed to arch and lean your head back to better absorb the shock? Ive heard of people talking about whiplash, geting knocked out, on a really, really, really hard opening, I have to wonder if you could literally break your neck. Wonder if thats ever happened. -

I read this and just wanted to give an opinion. Looks to me like you acted pretty responsibly, as far as pulling someones' cutaway, that was an accident, and accidents happen. You have to be ready for them. I think it is pretty fucked up that people were giving you an attitude at the DZ, because you heroically took control of the situation and took responsibility. Dude, if people are acting like that then they are not your friends and they dont deserve your time. From how you described it, I think you acted pretty heroically and those that are criticizing you are a bunch of lameasses. Find some new friends. -
Dude, why dont you just settle down? Dont sell any equipment or youre going to regret it. So maybe you just dont feel like the risk taking adventure right now, so what??? Go out on a date, do something else, get back in the air when you feel like it. Whats the rush? You dont have to be skydiving ALL THE TIME to be a skydiver. You do it when you feel like doing it, and if you dont feel like it, do something else for awhile. I think youre getting down on yourself for no reason at all.
