I would like to extend my hand to you for being one of the true pioneers of this sport. I have never met you but your name is a household word. I read the thread about your life in skydiving and had to read it twice. Well done Bill. Heal fast brother, then write a book. Larry PS: you must have a speed bag bigger than a hot air balloon.

Call Skydive Long Island @631-208-3900, they have 2 riggers there. One of them works in Greenpoint and I'm sure he can get you repacked during the week.

AFF is not going well for me
firstime replied to maestropaolo's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
had the same issues, I was told many times to relax and I told my instructor " I am hurling my body out of an airplane @13k and I should relax" Her repsonse was "you need a level of confidence which will make it easier to relax". It worked for me. Not sure what should come first but I walked to the plane with the attitude "I'm not a stupid person therefore just do what they told me to do" Once in the air I was like hot shit it works... Then I relaxed. Just a little food for thought. someone, somewhere at some given time is going to say something to you that will light a 1000 watt bulb in your head, then it all comes together. Good Luck and I am not going to tell you to relax because you all ready have been told that a zillion x -
Hey Tom, I think your missing a few decimal points in your Jump#'s

Scott Miller's Canopy Control Course
firstime replied to jblooming's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was some what taken back to hear your response especially with your yrs in the sport and jump#'s. You have carved in stone that "you NEVER stop learning" I took the class and my first jump was a crash and burn with a big dust ball.. He might be using that video to show what not to do. Now my landings are sweet but I gotta stop hollering "FINISH" when in the peas. I will do his class everytime he is in the northeast. PS: just when people think they know it all, just read slotperfect's post -

Do you think my wing-loading is too high? Plz?
firstime replied to xavenger's topic in Safety and Training
*** There are to many people talking new jumpers into high wing loadings. Fortunately, things are changing. great answer, I also asked around and most said 1:1 some said you can go a little smaller. I went with the manufacters suggestion..1:1 and I still crash and burn some of my landings at 20mph rather than 40 mph. I wont downsize until I get 25 consecutive stand ups, if not so be it I'll stick to my 190 so I can jump tomorrow. -
this is an interesting post, what if the alti is mounted on the bottom side of your wrist. A couple of hundred feet is ok but 1000k. This might explain a particular jump about a month ago. We discussed the dive and all agreed on our opening (I am somewhat anal when it comes to pull time) it turns out that 2 guys told me I was under 3k when I dumped and I disagreed because once my alti just touches the 4k I reach and open by 34 or so. OH well another thing to ponder on the way to altitude. I will try this with a 2 way, one alti back of the wrist and one on the bottom and compare in freefall.

anyone who tells you "you have NO reason to have a hook knife" is a complete asshole. It's a $10.00 survival tool.. wheather it works or not........ DUH!!! I do enjoy these forums but I am surprised at the ppl who would rather shoot a hole in something rather than offer a rational answer. We don't give answers (me especially) but offer what we have been thru. This forum is a great tool for all of us, stop the analyical bullshit and get to point. I am not by any means a seasoned skydiver but a seasoned person qualified to say the above .

sorry to hear your DZ has that attitude, my Dz tries to promote the"noobs" to get involved, and everyone has some great advice, because they (ppl @ SDLI) did NOT forget where they came from.

Can't think about anything but jumping: Introduction
firstime replied to Mockingbird's topic in Introductions and Greets
I started when I was 46. now 47. I am sort of glad i started later in life because as a younger guy I was not sharpest nail in the shed. Yes this sport has engulfed my life but for me It's great because I sold my house, kids are adults, wife left (not because of skydiving). The only bad thing about starting in your 40's or 50's you have to be careful with those landings because we dont bounce back in a day or 2 like yesteryear. Keep it up , get your license get involved with a group of people 2nd to none. its like being a teenager all over again but your much smarter. -
yup>> been there, bought a new rig, did my pack job at the DZ with some help. I then took it home to practice,I also had the "pack like a pro" video. Vacumed the floor, put the dog outside and here I go, well after watching that blob of nylon jump out the the bag 3/4 of the way in I wanted to kill Billy Weber and take a pair of scissors to my $1900.00 canopy and I had to dry it out from the 4 gallons of sweat from my forehead and voiced curse words that I didnt know existed. It's pretty scary when one curses a piece of nylon's mother, father, sisters bro's etc... I wish I had a video of myself as I would have sent it to Billy Weber. Good Luck & try to be calm when that miserable piece of shit jumps out the D just when you think you got it. LMAO

who makes up this terminology, like the plumbing industry.. there is ..ball cock(toilet) nipples (steel pipe) and the best is a pet cock valve (normally a boiler drain valve). Just like our terminolgy who makes this shit up such as "horney gorilla",, hybrid dead spider, wuffo etc.... etc . hey Im not bitchin but laughing as who labels this stuff. LMAO

I went thru a cloud last year, (should not have gotten out) but as I was falling thru it, I was holding my breath and didnt realize until I was clear. Then I was gasping only to realize I was holding my breath while falling thru this potential doom. It was only about 5 or 6 seconds but felt like 5 or 6 DAYS. I will never and I repeat NEVER put myself there again. Just breath thru it all.

did the same thing and it freak me out, instructors said my legs were not together. I didnt understand until I got a video. BINGO. Toe taps

Hey Paul, my son was the one who got me involved in this sport. I did my 1st tandem 5 years ago but got the infectous bug last year. Now my son and his friends think I am a raving lunatic. I keep telling my son that I am spending his inheritence. I usually do alot of stuff with my kids but they were really taken back when I pursued skydiving. His 1st mistake was when I hesitated on my 1st jump....he called my a pussy. I kiss him on the forehead everytime I see him and he f$%cking hates it. LMAO

good point, thats exactly what we are going to do next weekend. Slot??? where did it go???
-
I made an obersvation this weekend with both JM's and coaches. They are second to none, they have taught us how to stay alive, unbroke etc. At the the 10 minute call I could hear AFF students and !st time tandems talking about what happened in freefall, canopy, landing to their instructors. I paid close attention to their responses only to hear myself last year. They would answer their questions with that genuine look as if they have never heard it before. That really impressed me only because they hear it everyday and don't skip a beat, alot of ppl dont have that patience. Looking back (just 1 yr) It gave me a great sense of confidence therefore I raise my beer and hats off to you all.

As you can see I only have 80 jumps, but the first 25 or so were AFF then I did 30 someodd jumps all by myself. I didnt like to jump large groups and would always land away from others. It has changed in the last couple of weeks,... doing 4, 6 ways with ppl with pretty much with the same level as me. We do our dirt dives, do the mock up, rehearse the count. "out,in and out we go. We look like pros on the ground but when we get out.... what a goddam comedy. Yesterday was one of those days.. Who was going down , I am going up. With our inexperence we all decided to break off 6K. I had fun and the group had fun screwing up the dive, we were all laughing our asses off prior to break off. I am not saying this is cool, but even a super bad exit and a bad skydive was a ton of fun. This is a super fun sport, lovin the hell out of it. I will get better with more jumps comedy

getting advice from Tom is something you should put in your muscle memory, he a low keyed guy with alot of talent and knowledge. I have alot of respect for Tom as he is one of (in my opinion) the pioneers of this sport.
