There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998
olofscience replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
If you read the sentence after your quote: "The mood was cautious, as it is clear that lithium-ion batteries are maturing slowly, and that their limited energy density and high cost will preclude producing all-electric cars to replace the primary American family car in the foreseeable future." Back to the primary American family car again, and back to range (limited energy density) and cost argument. As I've said, it's not just range and cost that's important to people...am I talking to a wall? EDIT: I just saw the date on that link: September 2012??? The EV landscape between then and now has changed completely. You're really grasping at straws here. -

Same manufacturer as the LATimes one, BYD. So what is it about electric buses that are inherently terrible? I'm an engineer, spare no technical detail. I'll do my best to understand. -
A serious preponderance about Trump and Covid-19
olofscience replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
Nope. We want you to say that this came unexpectedly and the US needed a good leader in a time of crisis. If he succeeded and got it under control, he would have earned a landslide reelection and I would be happy with that. But he failed, failed spectacularly, and has now given up trying to control it. Americans will pay the price. Yet here you are saying "he made a few mistakes". -

Really sounds like you're anti-EV. The problems in that article is because the manufacturer was low quality. From an engineering perspective, city buses are a really good fit for EVs - especially their stop-start operation. -

He himself has admitted that the doctors were 50-50 about putting him on a ventilator. He needed "litres and litres of oxygen". Anyway this is off-topic. This is about a death toll approaching Hiroshima's that is being described as "sure, Trump could have done a few things better"... -

Well my "nobody" is a lot closer to zero than your "nobody" Anyway, more reasons to buy an EV: (see previous post for 1-8) no loss of power with altitude (see Pikes Peak hill climb record) ability to run it in unventilated spaces (try running an engine in a closed garage in winter) better interior (no centre floor column due to gearbox and driveshaft, more space in front trunk) much better reliability (again, fewer moving parts to fail) less messy (no engine oil or clutch fluid) Range and initial cost are legitimate reasons NOT to buy an EV, but operating and maintenance costs are big incentives, big enough that UPS ordered 10,000 electric delivery vans. Speed is a complete variable - the Bolt may be slower than your Accord, but that has nothing to do with it being electric. You can find combustion powered cars that are MORE expensive and slower than the Accord too. The reason that there's not that much variety in EVs is because...they're NEW. Advances in battery technology and wide-bandgap semiconductors will continue the slow march and eventually eliminate combustion engines in all but a few niche applications. I really don't get why you're so anti-EV except that the green lobby likes them, therefore you must hate it? Sure there are some green nutters, but if you're a free thinker you should form your own opinion without thinking of theirs. But clearly you're not an engineer or a manager of a large fleet of vehicles. -

And I will say the UK fucked up ROYALLY. An absolute disgrace and our idiot Prime Minister almost died from it himself. But Turtle is still saying "Trump could have done a few things better". See the difference? -

Now you're just assuming. If you think nigel99 doesn't have you figured out, you're making assumptions yourself. If Trump performed perfectly then yes I'd be impressed and will actually be thankful. But "he could have done better" when the death toll is approaching that of Hiroshima is a bit of an understatement. Taiwan: 6 South Korea: 255 New Zealand: 21 USA: 70,000+ Looks like the US has a "few more deaths" and "could have done better". -

No, nobody's listening to your arguments. Oh wait, you don't have any. (BTW, the mathematical quantity referred by "nobody" is zero. so you're already wrong on that) -
A serious preponderance about Trump and Covid-19
olofscience replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
It's a serious answer. Well, I have to change it to 255 - that's how many have died in South Korea so far. But if you're going to say again that US can't do what South Korea did, you can compare against New Zealand. Much more similar culture. Better leadership - only 21 died there. -

No, hate him or not, his mistakes have resulted in 70,000 dead, and a very deep economic recession. Hating him or loving him doesn't change how monumental that is. If you're letting your feelings toward him dictate what "monumental" is, you're the one who's biased. -

So did I say: range, speed, cold weather performance? No I did not. Convenience: I can charge at home, overnight. And since it's really easy to move electricity around, charging points can be everywhere, cheaply. By the way, electric cars are really popular in Norway. A country known for being cold. So that leaves you with range and speed. Oh, and you compared against a Bolt, is your Acord faster than a Model 3? That leaves you with range. I gave 8 reasons to buy an EV, you have 1. Next. -

olofscience replied to turtlespeed's topic in Speakers Corner
Times are very difficult financially for me. I'd love it if the US and the UK stopped Covid-19 without locking down like how South Korea and Taiwan did. Sadly, Trump's performance was very predictable. I would have wanted to be wrong about him. Even for climate change, I wish I was wrong and brenthutch was right, that would be SO much easier. But I'm not stupid. He screwed up, and you should stop denying it. -

lower maintenance costs lower operating costs higher performance more convenience no particulate emissions or harmful pipe emissions (even much less brake dust) power delivery flexibility (eg. backup power for your house in case of blackout) cheaper delivery infrastructure much quieter at low speeds Next question? -

Given that your position is the climate is BOTH changing and NOT changing, you've forfeited the chance to be right. What you are though, is irrelevant. The world has passed you by, technology will march on and the low price of oil reflects the new reality. We will buy more EVs, aircraft will become electric, and you will just be an old man refusing to let go of a fading era. And guess what. I used to work in the oil industry (metallurgical engineer monitoring corrosion in refinery heat exchangers and pipework). -

Love the conservative "can do" attitude pro tip: stop getting in the way. -
You're both mistaken. The world is laughing at him.

I think the main point is that it's not natural. It's one thing to make fun of a person who does something silly to their appearance, and a completely different thing to make fun of a person's natural skin colour.
-
That's his natural colour??? Maybe it's just me but the skin around his eyes is uncannily pale and the tan lines don't look natural at all. His hands are way paler than his face too.
-
I think you're the one who does that.

It's why we're called "Great" Britain. More seriously, it's because the UK government tried half-hearted contact tracing until around March 11th but didn't back it up with testing. Then people were arriving from all over the world, especially Italy and Spain, without any testing, screening, or self-isolation. Then there was about a 2 week delay since the government seemed to think "herd immunity" was the right strategy, if only to play the maverick as opposed to what the other European countries were doing. Only when the Imperial College model was released that they realised it was a stupid strategy, then made a u-turn and locked down on 23rd March. The thing with exponential growth is that the slightest delay will punish you severely. They're under-testing for a reason, it's to hide the fact that we're a lot worse than Spain or Italy. We've overtaken Spain in deaths, we'll overtake Italy within the next 3 days.

I know, I know, we need to lower our standards for the US...
-
If the US had kept to the same level of deaths per capita as South Korea, there would be 1,659 deaths in total by now. Currently it's 62,378. South Korea even had that "oh no" moment when 1 person attended an event with 9000+ other people. Yet they kept deaths under 250.
