Western journalists are actually now allowed back in Wuhan, and it does seem the testing has started: https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/may/15/wuhan-residents-queues-coronavirus-mass-testing-begins Even if they announce that they've completed the tests, you'll say they're lying anyway - but that's actually more to make yourself feel better than anything else. In the meantime, life goes on and the dying in the US continues.
-
Sorry, bad paraphrasing. But in any case, no I didn't believe it because it made Trump look bad, but because I was discussing the mechanics of the PCR tests, and up to that point Trump had not been mentioned.
-
The White House is doing extensive testing and contact tracing especially when the staffers got infected. Is it okay just for them? About the american people not accepting it - well, I don't think they were even asked.
-
With such a secretive country, who knows? All we can safely assume is that they're going to try this, not because they want to get rid of the virus, but because they want to make Trump look bad
-
TL;DR: Airdvr was making assumptions how long tests took and that was why it was impossible to do 11 million. So I gave some details about PCR testing. Then I was promptly accused of believing China's propaganda. Then turtle stepped in saying that it was a lie to make Trump look bad. So I started a joke about other things people do to make Trump look bad. Then you had your doubts about the logistics, so I asked for more details about what the bottlenecks are. You did provide more details, which I think are valid concerns. But we'll see as it's only an intention to do tests, they haven't accomplished it yet. Now let's get back to how every endeavour to do something good is only done to make Trump look bad
-
I'm saying that with what I know about PCR testing, there is no specific bottleneck that I can identify that will actually be insurmountable. Elon's plan to colonise Mars needs some technology that hasn't been developed yet. But in case of China's ambition to test 11 million people, they have the test kits, they have the PCR machines, they have the staff to do the testing. Unless they run out of reagent (which they also manufacture, so unlikely) the only thing I can think of is they'll probably take longer than 10 days to do it.

Millions of people get to vote on the same day in elections, so why can't millions also be swabbed? This is being done at the district level. The logistics of getting the swabs tested, results tabulated, tracked and sent out is challenging, for sure, but is there any particular bottleneck you can think of?
-
Don't you understand - any endeavour - trying to break a record in the Olympics, trying to achieve something good, is just reported to make Trump look bad
-
There are definitely concerns about China's truthfulness, and I see the announcement of 11 million tests as declaration of their ambition rather than actual ability. When Elon Musk announced his ambition to build a colony on Mars, people criticised him, laugh at him, for being too ambitious, but you don't say "you LIAR" as ambitions are neither truth nor lies, just intention. That's why I described how PCR tests work - you can look at the logistics of it, you can look at the cost of it, but saying it's not possible because they're liars isn't really useful. When China announces they've "finished" testing all 11 million Wuhan residents, then you can start the name-calling. Not before.

In other news, that bastion of lies, racism, and communism, New Zealand, is partially reopening as they haven't seen any new cases in several days and could contact-trace those more easily: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/world-asia-52658550
-
You're reaching. I haven't mentioned Trump. The articles about the 11 million tests don't mention Trump. This doesn't make Trump look bad. Trump makes Trump look bad. I was just trying to give airdvr some information how tests work. If China started saying the sky was blue, he'd say it was green just because they said it.
-
I'm not saying I believe it. I'm just telling you how PCR tests are done.
-
The test just consists of taking a nasal swab that takes only a few seconds. The swabs take MUCH longer than 5 minutes to process (PCR takes several hours) but they can do thousands of swabs at a time.

No argument? Probably because it's true. I knew an elderly man in our building, extremely right wing, conspiracy theorist, Brexit supporter, Trump supporter and all that. Listening to him I started to realise that a lot of his complaints centred around his life pretty much staying the same as in the 70s, but when he saw the lives of ethnic minorities and people in developing countries start to improve, he thought he was falling behind and that made him really angry. Airdvr, you're not falling behind if that's what you're thinking. A rising tide floats all boats. You'll just have to get used to a bit more equality.
-
Thanks. I didn't see it, but if I did there would be no complaints from me. (Edit: the date March 13th looks a bit late, but better late than never...and from what it seems is that "never" was actually the result) Now to wait if any leftists complain about New Zealand's travel restrictions.
-
So that's what the bastion of communism, New Zealand, is doing right now?
-
Might be just me, but Trump doesn't stop doing something because of a little pushback.
-
Actually, New Zealand is doing that now. Lots of bans and those that aren't are strictly quarantined for 2 weeks. It's a perfect opportunity to test your argument on Phil1111: Phil, what do you think of the New Zealand travel rules? Are they being racist like Trump?
-
Temporarily, yes. Ideally, any arrivals, whatever nationality, should have been with testing, screening and/or a 14-day quarantine. I'm very left-leaning but if Trump had done that, I would have understood. Instead, what he did was ban Chinese nationals coming in, but allowed American citizens coming from China, Italy and other affected countries without any testing, screening, or quarantine. That's why there was an outcry - the virus doesn't choose nationality. ANY arrivals from affected countries, no matter what skin colour you have, should have been tested, screened and quarantined. Hundreds of thousands of people arrived in US airports with no screening at all during that period. He did the same with the EU (Schengen) area but left it open to badly-hit UK. Which makes it really obvious that his travel bans weren't really driven by science or any reasoning at all.

I was in Singapore when the SARS virus hit in 2003. I know how it was brought under control. Assuming what you mean by "communistic approach" is how New Zealand and other countries dealt with it, then not only am I ok with it, I was expecting it to be the approach. Imagine my surprise when giving up was chosen instead.
-
Well, congratulations on winning all these imaginary debates with them in this hypothetical world where Trump was actually competent.
-
Wow, that's a lot of hypotheticals. Do you have imaginary debates in your head all the time?
-
Well said. The problem is very real. But it's not China. The "middle class" jobs in China pay about $20k per year. $4k per year could even be considered "middle class" in China. Bring those all back, sure. Then even the gig economy would look well-paying by comparison.

There IS a problem with global warming... it stopped in 1998

I think even then he would still be irrelevant. He's like a flat earther. He will still be shouting "EVs have no future!" as the last gasoline cars are sent to the scrapyard.
