Holy Moly - I come to check in and this thread still lives. Amazing. I'm actually tempted to read the whole thing. The furor over the Libby pardon is amusing in the abstract, as it really affects very few people. The President has the legal power to commute sentences, and that power was used. Its use in this case was legal, with the motives being questioned by many. The name Mark Rich comes to mind when pondering this. If you check it out, neither GWB nor El Jefe Clintonista nor Reagan nor Carter are in the top few presidents for # of pardons issued. Kind of like the Federal Prosecutor firings. Quite a legal thing to do. Motives again were questioned, but very legal in all regards. And, as w/Libby's pardon, affecting very few people. Both are really non-scandals and have little effect on the nation as a whole. The fact they've generated so much furor is a testament to the power of the press - which leans which way? Ahhhh yes. Congress should instead spend its time taking pork out of the budget. Who was it that said that earmarks were going away again? Refresh my memory please? All of you left wingers angry about this, need to do something. Express outrage that another perjurer, William J. Clinton, did not get any prison time for his crime OR stop bemoaning the commutation of Mr. Libby's sentence. I'm happy the bill was defeated, but do think the immigration system needs massive reform. Unfortunately, this bill didn't turn into the vehicle for that much needed reform.

This is true. I'm wondering about the lack of compliance out of curiosity, but in all reality Cheney's lack of compliance is little more than an admin shuffle. Libby was denied no due process of law, though the system was used in a somewhat unfair manner. Speaking of fair, how fair is it that Libby gets prison time for a perjury conviction and William Jefferson Clinton served not one day for a perjury conviction?
