Sometimes I think they stretch things in their cyberalerts, but overall their reporting and monitoring of the bias is dead on the mark. His book does a fantastic job of refuting claims made by certain liberals - Begala for instance - that there is no liberal media bias and that there might even be some conservative bias in the news. Really good reading. But you don't really have to read any of the above - just watch the news over a one month time and you'll see so much leftist bias it isn't even funny. Fox, on the other hand, seems right wing because it's news without the usual bias to the left. I challenge you to find anything biased in Brit Hume's reporting. You can find political views injected into the commentary in FoxNews from both sides of the fence, but the reporting, I think not.

The old Soviet block will never be back together. Putin has run one of the most secretive governments since Khruschev since attaining office and will undoubtedly continue to do so. The Khordokovsky/Yukos affair was a strike by Putin at a political opponent which ended up reclaiming a privatized industry and placing it back under state control. It had nothing to do with recreating the USSR.

I'm not sure if I'd agree with you there on the return of the USSR. I would agree that Mr. Putin's recent actions are remniscient of the old Soviet Union however. Dunno. The Chechen problem has been a thorn in Putin's backside for quite some time. The atrocities committed at Beslan certainly enraged the general populace of all former members of the Soviet bloc - and the rest of the world as well (those with any vestige of morality at any rate) - so much that any action taken by Putin in the name of justifying repression of the Chechen Islamist movement would undergo less scrutiny than other actions he might take. That being said, the matter of Yuko/Gazprom/Khordorkovsky isn't really sequitur to the Chechen situation. The actions taken by Putin and friends are remniscient of the Khruschev era in some respects.
