  1. As a student you'll proabably pull at 5,500 the rules relating to how low you can go before deploying depend on where in the world you are and how many jumps you have. Generally its a minimum hight of 2,000 or 3,500. Most people I know pull arround 3 - 3,500ft. That seems to be about average for licensed jumpers.
  2. Should I submit my add of the other day? http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/classifieds/detail_page.cgi?ID=7842&d=1 (I saw an add once in our local paper for "used contraceptives"... I didnt enquire so I'm unable to offer you any further explanation).
  3. I can't give you experianced advice but I can provide a couple of figures you might be able to work with: The PD 143r has an actual size of 151 square foot and a pack volume of 343 cubic inches. The PD 125r has an actual size of 137 square foot and a pack volume of 296 cubic inches. (source: Para-Gear)
  4. work is boring me too. I've decided that I'm gonna file a huge great pile of post I've let build up (only crap like "we acknolage your letter" etc). I don't usually bill for it but cos there's so much im gonna charge the clients £6 a letter just to file it. Who said I'm in a bad mood today
  5. Size is defiantly of secondary concern to shape !
  6. If its a USPA DZ you'll have to have at least temp USPA membership, (I'd buy full membership cos its not a lot more and you get the subscription to parachutist). Check on the two recent reserve seal and reserve repack threads. The technically correct rules re your reserve are a lot more strict than what we find is usually required by the DZ. Whilst usually all they ask is for it to be in the 120 day repack cycle, just be aware that they are not in the wrong if they require more than just that. I think (read worried) that perhaps this year DZ's might be a little more aware of the true rules re visiting jumpers because of the recent changes to the FAA.
  7. Serioulsy Melissa, you don't have to ask us to play with our balls - we got that one down fine. (note to acknowlage the serious issue you raise).
  8. prolly got bored when he couldnt find and bolt croppers
  9. ok, thats cool. My housemate and I tried this once when we were both sat arround trying to write our dissertaions a couple of years back. We got to like 40 or 50 but thats frickin awsome.... sooooo many names for it. Excellent! I gotta add three British ones though: Chuff Fadge Fanny (yes it means the front bum here)
  10. man thats soooo true of me.
  11. For me, I assessed the snag risk a ringsight created and decided that I would want a significant benefit from it to warrant the increaced risk. From what I understand from reading here, the sort of ringsight your talking about simply doesnt offer enough of an advantage over goggle based sighting methods to warrant taking that increased snag risk. For me! Your risk - your assessment. Therefore the if I were going to use a ringsight I'd only go for a Newton concentric ring ringsight to give me the maximum possible benefit for the same added risk as one of the lesser ones. I don't want one yet though... hell, my camera helmet hasn't even been finished yet so take my advice as it is - from a newbie.

Sounds like more like 70 odd then. I think there's gotta be arround 30-40 on the BCPA trip, plus 30odd royal engineers, plus Nicks 5 or 6, plus your 6... conservativly thats more than 70! Sorry America

Few. There are probably going to be arround 50 brits between Elsinore and Perris over easter. Last year I remember Jack Gramley at perris saying he wanted to creat a new boogey called "the brits are comming" where loads of brits came over because anyone with a UK passport got cheap jumps. Looks like with the numbers and the exchange rate he's getting his wish even after he's left the DZ!

see I'm thining I'd have to order it and then it won't arrive while I'm out there.... sooooo.... I'd have to take another trip later in the year to pick it up... whoo (besides the £199 return plane ticket is probably about what shipping and tax would come to so I reckon it counts as a free holiday). (either that or I get my mates to ship it through his military connections for free.... but then no free holiday then )

If I can find 2:1 I'll buy a Safire II instantly from Square 1. That would make it £700 brand new in custom colous and less than many seccond hand canopies!

Yeah but the icon is called "crazy". I wasn't feelin it at the time.
  19. Thats how I bought my first rig!!! I'd been saving £2 coins for a few years. You don't get them that often so its no real dent in your pocket but a few quickly make a fair nest egg. Here's a photo of paying for my rig. That's £900 in £2 coins! I just went round and emptied a big money bag over his kitchen worksurface so the coins all poured everywhere

why do you want it to go back down? I think its sorted now! - we get half price everything if we buy from the US at the moment... whoo. maybe I'm misreading your post. [confused icon that i wish there was] On a serious note - yes... does anyone know the money markets are likly to do? I'm too wondering if I should buy now or wait for the dollar to fall more... if it can... or if I ought get it now while its low?
  21. the first question people are going to ask is... "what do you want to do with it? eg side vs. top mount, fun jumps, competition 4-way, tandem, pro work... etc etc." so I guess I'll get the ball rolling and ask the question.
  22. From my reading "fisheye" is more to do with the image distortion than with how wide the lens is. I've had a Titanium 0.38 wide angle which was not a fisheye and had virtually no distortion. My housmate has a Titanium 0.42 fisheye wide angle which had a massive goldfish bowl effect to it. There are many lenses which are "fisheye" but relativly narrow at only 0.6 or 0.7 There are also superwide angle lenses at 0.4 or less which have no fisheye effect. One term is not necessarily synonymous with the other.
  23. Last I heard he was selling off the gear he learned with... maybe you're his buyer?
  24. Check out this thread: http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=645279#645279 There's a regular poster on here called Aubrey who has just been through what you're looking at and posted updates on how he was doing. Its not been clear sailing for him and he's had some obsticles to overcome but he's jumping fine now. Maybe PM him and ask him about it or just go through some of his old posts - the whole story is mapped out there by someone who is only 6 months ahead of you in the chain.
  25. Go over and tell him he's made a big mistake and that he's actually Hindu. Tell him he's never gonna attain Moska and have his soul unify with Brahman if he keeps on like that. Also he should go off and prey to Ganesh and stop spouting this heretical nonsense.
