You are right, helmets are a good thing. But what pass for a skydiving helmets are shit. You pay $300+ for something that gives little more protection that a toy helmet. I have a full face MC helmet that is Dot approved and Snell approved. It also cost me less than $200. While they may be better then nothing, skydivers seem to be trying to justify the fact that the industry is supplying us with overpriced helmets that are little more then a fashion statement. What is the best pack medthod for a huge canopy
mjosparky replied to cvfd1399's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Bert, You are probably right. I jump a 245 sq. ft. 7 cell and I know it is more trouble then its worth to try and pro pack. I am sure the MT-1X can be pro packed but it is much easier to flat pack. I looked on several sites for the cord/span of some of the larger Tandem canopies but could not find any. A 2 foot difference in the cord would make a big difference in how easy it would be. What is the best pack medthod for a huge canopy

Could you explain to me the difference in the cord for this canopy and the cord for another large canopy like an EZ-384? The reason why I ask is I've been pro-packing tandems for a couple years now, the largest being an EZ-384, the smaller ones being Sigma 370s with no problems. I don't use a hook, just my shoulder and I flip the lines back into the middle after setting it down. With all of that I've never had any problems with line overs or linetwists, etc. Basically I consistantly have on heading, nice snivelly openings. It is a 7 cell with less aspect ratio then a large 9 cell. The span is 28.5 feet. If you pro pack it over your shoulder you will have over half the canopy piled up on the ground. If you are 6 feet tall and say 5 feet at the shoulder that leaves 8 feet of canopy on the ground. The manufacture recommends a flat pack which is always something to consider. This canopy has a cord of 13 feet. That is 3 feet higher than a baskeball hoop. Just putting it on the hook would be a problem. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
You're not a real skydiver unless....
mjosparky replied to ltdiver's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
The longer you jump, the more jumps you have and the better you get at it, the less chance you have of becoming a "Real Skydiver". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
The last jump of the day/weekend I do not pack. I take the rig home and go over everything while packing it. Can take up to an hour, but since I am not trying to make a load or talk trash with friends there is no rush. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Why did you have to figure things out? I gave you the packing manuel on the damn thing. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
John, Thanks, that was my first try at that clicky shit. Jim, I can't remember any of them. That was way before I was old enough to jump. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

No, you should jump what you are comfortable with. My post was just a statement of fact. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

The man who holds the patent on both systems uses a BOC/throw out. Is there any other information you need before making you decision? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Up until the introduction of Type 17 risers the weakest link on a sport harness was the hardware. Most of the hardware used is rated at 2500 pounds, while the webbing is from around 4000 pounds, Type VIII, to around 7000 pounds, Type XIII. I have taken 3600 pounds per side, just under 36 G's total, on opening and it hurt like hell but did not break anything. It was considered a "non test" because I would not repeat it. I have never heard of any being "designed" that way. Some designs end up with weak links either by accident or due to the choice of materials for various components. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Type 17 risers were designed as a fashion statement. The weight they save and the speed gain they give is so small it would be hard to measure. Type 17 is rated at 2500 pounds and that is as weak as anything on a rig. If you notice your reserve risers are always made of Type VII front and Type VIII rear. jmo Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Bill & Mike, Thanks to both of you for being so open about what goes on in your shops. I am sure this helps some of the newer jumpers and the older ones for that matter, feel more secure is the gear they jump. As always, knowledge is power and you are providing knowledge to many. I have never criticized Butler on any of his advertising. But I do criticize him for his bad mouthing of other manufactures and their products when the other manufactures are not present. When he talks to them face to face he sings a different song. I have seen this repeatedly at the last several SAFE symposiums. And the light weight, low speed sports canopies were never designed to be worn by the crews of high speed aircraft. That is what canopies designed in the standard category were for. An example would be the ParaInovators R-4. It came in a low speed, block constructed version and biased constructed standard category version. If I remember right the lines were also different. Yes, I do know how to get ahold of Dennis. PM me a number to reach you and I will pass it on to him. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Jim, Good post, both for pilots and skydivers. On some sundays Elsinore is like an airplane freeway. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

I think GravityGirl might be on the right track. Did the rig originally have a leg pocket and get converted to BOC? If so is there any velcro between the BOC pocket and where the bridle tucks under the container flap? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Rob, I have seen some video from some of the early tests of the "Sombrero" slider in use. It seems to work really well as a reefing system for high speeds. Do you know how it works at lower speeds and weight? Do you know who's 24' conical is coming apart on his home page. It does not appear to have any staging at all. Thanks for the link.
