  1. Mick, I think you are right. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  3. The FAA's prime mission is to protect people and property on the surface from those fools that would fly in the sky. The method they developed to do this was to insure that the airplane was built and maintained in such a way so as to reduce the chance that it would fall from the sky and injure said people and property on the surface. At some point they were charged with the same responsibility for those that would jump from a plane. Being a bureaucracy, they followed the same path they were already using for aircraft. And it seems that way did not fit all that well. As has been said before, we are sort of the step child and they lack the time, interest and training to deal with us in a timely and efficient manner. We jump TSO'd gear because it is the law and we lack a better method of assuring safe equipment. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. There is a thing called a Somat that does what you are talking about. It is used in parachute testing and can record up to 8 parameters. Thing like deployment load and duration, rate of descent, altitude, forward speed. One problem, they cost somewhere over $5,000. They need a power source and have a limited record window. 5. Man, that's harsh......... Harsh, but it seems to apply to way some people react to being held responsible for their actions or lack of action. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. Your statement sounded like you were not aware that TSO standards apply to much more then parachutes. Since you were aware of his intent, what was your point in running down his method of presenting it. After all it is his thread. Outlining you views on the subject would have been more educational to those who do not fully understand the process. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. Gloves will only offer so much protection, your rings can still get caught on something. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. Shh! Most jumpers don't know that and don't want to hear it. In any case they are not 20 + years old and may come from the acid mesh era. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. There are TSO's that apply to things other then parachutes/HC system. I believe he was referring to TOS-C23 and its variants. It is the only one that does not apply to part of an aircraft. 11. They may not be directly out to kill you, but never underestimate the corners people will cut while under the influence of greed. Then there's a ton of ideas that "looked good on paper". As a rigger, I've seen examples from both categories. Some kind of regulation is needed. -Blind You seem to have a very low opinion of gear manufactures. I have found over the years that most do far more then is required to assure that the gear they produce is safe. The tough part is making it skydiver proof. 12. I agree, they should not be used on smaller, high performance canopies. But I was addressing the fact that they work well and are safe for H&P jumps. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. Test jumping a canopy with out a second reserve is not a good idea. (especially with 36 jumps) Without knowing the history of this canopy, there is no way of knowing what will happen. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  14. Rob is right. A properly made bungee PC will open just find down to speeds of about 40/45 mph. This myth that they do not work on H&P's is just that, a myth. I have used them on H&P exits out of a Wilga at 50 mph on demos. How do you "cock" a bungee PC? Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  15. Bill, There has been a rule against pulling at 1600 feet since I started jumping. When I was S&TA at Perris, opening at that altitude would in most cases be a grounding. 1600 feet is just about half of the altitude an "A" lic. is required to be open and 900 feet below that of a "B" lic. "C" and "D" lic. holders would only be 400 feet low, but they should know better. I feel that anytime a cypres fires it is a big deal and if the jumper was not just seconds from death, he/she were closer then they could ever dream. At 1000 feet you have about 5 sec. to impact if you do nothing. But then take away 2 of those sec. because by then it is too late to do anything. jmo Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  18. AS-8015B will continue to be the standard for TSO-C23d for some time. It will take the FAA at least a year, once accepted, to change. AS-8015B was issued 7 July 1992 but TSO-C23d did not take effect until 1 June 1994. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  19. Bill, I take it you were using a PC made of a lopo type material? With a 27" ZP PC, I maxed out a 100 pound scale at just over 95 mph. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  23. If a team or individual was disqualified in any other sport or competition, would they be allowed to continue participation in the competition? Would competing team have a problem with sharing the plane with a load of fun jumpers, ie non competitors? Just a thought. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  25. I would like to be there and watch when this P/U truck is driven at 100 to 200 mph with a PC in tow. The average hand deploy PC, at terminal, arould 120 +/- will produce over 100 pounds of drag. I not as detailed at you asked for but that is all I have tested to.
