  1. I feel most of the current top manufactures would continue to test to the present AS-8015B standards. The would also continue to keep the same or similar records for materials traceability and production QA. But on the other hand, you would also get rigs produced by the local rigger who thinks he understands all that is involved in making a rig that is safe and reliable. In the early 80's there where people making copies of popular rigs without following the QA checks required by a TSO. Quote Pilotdave The TSO requirements aren't particularly complicated.*** When was the last time you completed a test series for a TSO or set up a production line to include the required paperwork and QA points for a TSO. 2. Tom, Yes, I do remember the problem with losing PC puds. I was one of them. I tried laying it off on the fact I had a new rig but the real reason was I was getting lazy on my pull. The jumper that could not move his arms after being his in freefall was Rick Th........ I talked with him a couple of weeks later and it gave me chills. 3. Jeanne, He is not having flash backs, that is his current rig. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. I think this is the best suggestion yet. Have the jumper write up a short outline of the talk thus forcing him to go over the incident. And as far as a grounding for the purpose of reflection, bull shit. Think of it as punishment. Remember punishment? You do something bad, something bad happens to you. 5. I can not believe how people can argue with this rule. No one is taking away your right to vote or your ablility to breath. If your AAD fires and you do not have a good reason, you just lived through the dumbest thing you will ever do. If you do not see the reality of that, buy a bowling ball. You sound like a bunch of spoiled kids. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. Legal? The mfg suggested it, I asked him if it was kosher, he said don't worry, and since the mfg was doing it, I didn't question any more. I had doubts but didn't care because it is a completely non-invasive modification. The load is still applied to the L-bar links, not 'extending' or adding a second set of risers into the harness. Even when I moved away from the area, other riggers never questioned the mod. I certainly was glad a year later when I had to use it, a lot of tall trees surrounding that DZ, wouldn't have wanted to be under a round. The TSO was issued on the system that was tested. Making this kind of change to the harness, the way the reserve loads the harness means there is no TSO on that rig. The manufacture can incorporate minor changes into his production and QA SOP's but that is a major change in the design. From TSO-c23d: (vi) The quality control inspection and functional test specification to be used to ensure each production article complies with this TSO, as required by part 21, section 21.605(a)(3) and part 21, section 21.143(a)(3). 7. Type 17, mini risers, is 2,500 lb. and Type VIII, standard risers is 4,000 lb. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. Sounds like an urban legend to me. He hung on to the cutaway handle until after he pulled the reserve? Sparky I stand corrected. I recieved this from a very reliable source. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. Shit does not just happen. There is a reason for things happening. You go below 1000' and you cypress fires you had a major gear problem or you fucked up. In either case, without the cypress you are dead. People need to understand that. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  10. The mfg of my previous old rig made a set of 14 inch risers to attach to the harness at the L-bar link. The original 2-reserve risers were so short that the toggles were easy to reach (used it once). This was such a good way to get 4 risers out of an old rig. It also helped that I jumped where the rigs were made. I doubt if it was legal since it was not tested with the riser extensions. It really changes how the load is applied to the harness. 11. His math may be wrong, but all rigs are TSO'd with Type Vll and Type Vlll risers. Do you think maybe there is a reason for that. Type 17 risers and mini rings add nothing positive to a rig and can and do cause problems. Some people say they make their canopy go faster. That may be so, but very few people have access to the equipment needed to measure the difference. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  12. Many of the old rigs were not TSO'd for use with ram air reserves. They will have only 1 riser per side and/or the reserve risers will be very short with without toggles. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  15. Yes a good looking redhead with a nice as............................. And she rides a Shadow. Sparky Thanks, Sparky! How are you, my friend? Weather permitting, I'm going for a cycle ride on Friday. Beautiful scenery here with the leaves changing color and all. Too bad you couldn't join for a ride.
  16. Hey Lady, Treat them all as high speed. Evaluate, make your decision and act as fast as your knowledge and experience will allow. Most ram air malfunctions, high speed or low speed, will only get worse. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  22. Unless your main bridle is extremely long, the reserve canopy is still in the bag as it goes by the main PC and bridle. What happens is the lines of the reserve are damaged and blow on deployment of the reserve. Depending on what lines let go, this can cause damage to the canopy, sometimes major damage.
