  1. The hole in the the top is the apex opening. It's size and design help control the opening characteristics of the canopy and can increase the drag coefficient of the canopy. (ie, cats eye apex) It vents high pressure during deployment to prevent damage to the canopy and the load. It has nothing to do with controlling oscillation. This is done by vents in the lower sections of the canopy or by a four line release. A by-product of this a slight forward speed. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. Are you suggesting that they do the same thing as winglets? I've posted about my thoughts on em a couple times so I won't bother again, but I don't believe for one second that they do the same thing that winglets do on airplanes. Dave I am not suggesting anything more then one persons opinion does not make it fact. Nor did I mention anything about winglets. Have you considered that they might have a similar effect of a stall fence like those found on a Roberson STOL conversion? This mod. has a proven positive effect on slow flight performance. 3. Canopies don't go that fast yet, do you really think that at the speeds reached even on a full speed approach at a higher then normal wingloading (3.0-ish:1) that it would make a difference? I don't doubt they make a difference in aircraft applications, I really think that all they do for current design canopies is increase drag. They are not for effect at high speed, they effect control of a high speed wing, ie high performance canopy, when it is flown at slow speeds. But not being "KNOWLEDGEABLE" what do I know. 4. I take it that is just your opinion? The engineers designing high speed airplane wings and NASA think they might serve a purpose. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  5. Good question Jack. I don't have an answer for you though. I haven't heard of one, maybe someone else can jump in with some information. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. First of all, you need to try and keep things straight in your own mind. I did not make any claims about how dangerous your gear is. Stop putting words in my mouth. I don't like the taste. Try and come out of the fog long enough to understand a few simple facts. You wrote: And: These irrelevant design updates you refer to were made because of what did happen, not unfounded fears. These change were made to address problems with function that were not readily apparent in the original design. Like Pilotdave posted, your rig may not be any more dangerous then it was when it was manufactured. But no matter what condition it is in, it is less safe then the current gear manufactured by the same company. I can make this statement without ever seeing the rig and know it to be true. I made my first 100 or so jumps on a military surplus rig converted to sports use. At the time, the risk level was considered acceptable. Today that level of risk is not only unacceptable but foolish. You say How many riggers have worked on this rig since you have owned it? One final point. You seem rather cavalier with your own safety considering the people depending on you. That is not meant as a flame, just an observation. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. The simple answer is if you are going too fast too low, this device will do what you should have already done. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  8. 4) What reference are you using when you put any reserve on #4 Rapide links. 5)What was the H/C tested with, what was the reserve canopy tested with. I believe it is the riggers call to determine compatible components when assembling a system. jmo Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. I was wondering, if you got you canopy wet less often it might fly better and you wounldn't get it wet as often because it would fly better if it was not always wet........... Oh well, just a thought. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  11. Actually, you haven't! I think it has already been established that what you think does not count, in the eyes of the FAA that is. So repeating your own claims about how great the gear is does not prove it is not dangerous. One thing you are very good at is putting words in someone's mouth. No where have I said your "old rig is a hole in the ground waiting to happen". And could you tell me where it is that I made "slanderous accusations against the integrity" of anyone? If you wish to discuss the facts of any subject, you first have to understand what is fact and what is made up nonsense. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  13. From 1991 to 2003 Cypres claims 293 saves. If "1 in ten" were "jumper pulled just as cypres fired", that leaves 260+ or 18% using 125 for cutters sold each year. I don't see a difference between students and experienced on this, the ground doesn't care. In any case, it is 260 or so more people who would have quit jumping on that day without a cypres. 15. A lot of people forget to turn slowly while grabbing air. If you turn fast and immediately go to a track position, you will loose a bunch of altitude before the track becomes effective. Sparky That has not been my experience. I was taught much the same method as riggerrob decribed, and I find that turn rate can be as fast as you like once you have the technique learned, without any loss of altitude. Re-read what I wrote, it pretty much says what Rod did except it was addressed to a new jumper still trying to learn the technique. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  16. Bill, Do you have any wide based study to back up this statement or are you going by just the ones you have seen. 5-10% sounds like a guess on your part. Kallend, Have you ever had to remove someone from one of your classes for disruptive behavior? Or maybe I should put it this way. Has there ever been a student in one of your classes who's behavior affected the other students in a negative way and should have been removed? Agreed is spelled with an "r". 17. What I meant was if it does not have a diaper the lines are usually stowed in the bottom of the container. You remember how it was done on an old chest mount, stow the lines in stow bands attached to the container and S-fold the canopy on top of the lines. There is no method of staging the deployment in an orderly manner. Attached is a picture of a chest mount deployment that was packed in this manner. From PPM Vol. I, page 569: OBSOLETE ITEM: An object or item which is no longer considered acceptable. One which has been superseded. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  20. Same questions: Does the 26' navy have a diaper on it or are the lines stowed in the container? Does it have a 4 line release. Does it still have the water pockets on it? My first reserve was a 24' flat, unmodified and without a diaper. That is one scary mess coming out. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
