  1. This is very sad news if in fact they were skydivers. But it appears this may have been a general aviation incident and not skydiving related. Hopefully time will bring more information. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  2. There are more jumps and landings made under round mains/reserves every year than any other type of canopy. It is not the "round" canopy that is a problem, it is the technique used when landing. Sort of like a H/P ram air. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  3. That would be one honorable Mike Owens. Also a member of Air Trash... Larry, wrong "Sparky". Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  4. I have been jumping a handle on both sides since I first went to a pig rig. At first it was a main ripcord on the right and a reserve ripcord on the left, both inboard. When single point release came about I stayed with handles. I have done gorilla 10 way exits, chunked pieces out of a tailgate and done CREW. I have never had a handle snag or get pulled. But I have seen people go in trying to locate a soft pud that had folded under the MLW. New and different is not always better. Often new and different starts out as a fashion statement or for ease in production. Only after the fact do people come up with ways to justify its use. 5. The last time I went to 30,000 we did it in about 3 hours total. That’s pre-breathing on the ground, climb in a King Air and jump. How long do you think Ed would last at 8,000 meters without the weeks of acclimatizing? The TUC figures work pretty good for what they were calculated for. Trying to compare climbers to skydivers is apples and oranges. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  6. Ed Viesturs has just completed "The Fourteen". He has climbed the world's 14 highest peaks, all over 8000m high, WITHOUT OXYGEN. www.everestspeakersbureau.com/edviesturs.htm Whats your point? We are discussing skydiving, not climbing. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  7. Above somewhere around 43,000 feet you will need positive pressure breathing equipment and around 63,000 feet you will need a full pressure suit. It is not a matter of using them if you have access to them, you will not survive without them. As for the “Time of useful consciousness” charts, they are based on a body at rest. If you have even a light work load, such as walking to the door, those times can be cut in half. Just because it has been done and will be done in the future does not mean it is the smart thing to do. Sparky This is what Beerlight is talking about. 8. I did it for several reasons one of which is I am lazy and two I have a low boredom threshold. But mainly to prove a theory I had about "line dump" and bag whip caused by line stows. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  9. And you are making my point. The things you mention can and sometimes do cause a faster speed at the time the canopy comes out of the bag. This faster speed will decrease the fill time and the causes a more "crisp" opening. As I have said, slider and fill time are what determine opening loads. And these loads, amount and duration, determine felt "opening shock". Yes the bag is my design. I made it several years ago and it is the only one I have or will make. 10. You are right to a point. Faster deployment speeds mean harder opening. But that is because the faster speeds decrease the fill time and a decreased fill time will make the slider less effective as a reefing device. It is still the slider size, design and packing plus the fill time of the canopy that affect the opening shock. By doing things to increase the canopy speed as it comes out of the bag you decrease fill time. Harder openings Check the pictures attached to post 12 of this tread. I have been jumping this bag for over a 1000 jumps. No problem. Sparky http://www.dropzone.com/cgi-bin/forum/gforum.cgi?post=1689723;#1689723 My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  11. T, I wrote a check for a new jumpsuit on Jan. 14 of this year. I recieved it back for the third time last week. I ever sent them my old suit and said to make itreceived just like that one. I have only made a couple of jumps on it so I am not sure if it is right yet. It is a piss poor way to do business, but it seems like it is becoming more and more common. 12. There 2 thing that affect how hard a canopy opens, the slider and the fill time. For the slider it is the size, shape and placement during packing. The fill time is a function of design and can be controlled to some extent by how the nose is handled during packing. Anything that happens before the canopy comes out of the bag does not affect opening shock because the canopy is not opening if it is still in the bag. As I mentioned in another thread, I have over 1000 jumps on a bag that uses just 2 locking stows. The rest of the lines are stowed in a side pocket for the purpose of order only. I can pack the canopy to knock your socks off or to give you a 500 foot snivel. Those who think they get better, on heading openings from not double stowing or not using tight stows, the reason is because the bag is not whipping back and forth as much which causes asymmetrical and off heading openings. But it has nothing to do with how hard the canopy opens. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  13. *** That's a case where a picture...truly IS worth a thousand words!! Scary, hell I have been in the air with that guy. Now thats scary. You probably new his dad. Lyle Cameron Sr. Yep, thats Lyle Jr. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  15. How can anything that happens before the canopy comes out of the bag have any effect on opening. The canopy is still folded up sitting in the bag until the locking stows release. I do not believe there is anything called "line dump" or it would happen on every reserve opening. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  16. And this "old guy" will hobble out to board the plane for you Ash dive. Sparky ------------------------------------------------------ Manifest me for that jump too, Mike. :o) bozo My plan is to live forever. And so far so good.
  17. Without some way to stage the deployment you get this. (see attachment) But you only need the locking stows to keep the bag closed until line stretch to get a staged deployment. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  18. All the canopies were flown straight in at full flight for speed measurements. No adjustment was made for angle of attack or descent rate of the different canopies. I would not call it a "scientific experiment." Test parameters, data points and other controls usually present for a test program were weak at best. 19. Any one who intentionaly sets a down wind pattern in the main landing area is self centered and childish. It is the ego driven act of a someone who has a need to show off. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  20. Smaller pack volume = less weight. Then they add more weight to their weight belt. When people use their risers (front) for turns, they use dive loops which are made out of 1" material on both Type 17 and Type VIII risers.
  21. I jump a bag that has just 2 locking stows. The rest of the lines go in a side pocket. As long as the bag is held closed until line stretch what you do with the lines will not effect the opening of the canopy. The tighter your stows the more chance of bag whip which can cause the bag to spin. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

  23. tHAT'S FROM gYPSY mOTHS ISN'T IT sPARKY? No, its a quote I first heard from Terry "Twitch" Ward in the late seventies. If you ever met Terry you would understand. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  24. He JP, it was good seeing today. I decided to leave early, to much stupid in the air. Maybe tomorrow we can have a cold one and tell lies to each other. Frenchy, Come up and introduce your self tomorrow. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
  25. Several years ago I made jumps on 11 different canopies over a 3 day period. They ranged in size for 189 sq. ft. to almost 300 sq. ft. The first jump on each canopy was with a 32" F-111 no-collapsible PC. The second was with a 28" ZP center line collapsible PC. On each jump the forward speed was measured with a hand held radar gun with the canopy flying head on. The largest speed differential was less then 2 mph with the average less the 1 mph. I would have to agree with you that all canopies will benefit for a collapsed pilot chute but very few jumpers have access the equipment necessary to measure the difference. And very few jumps have the ability to use the difference. Sparky My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
