No it is not. Smoke is drifting North/Northeast. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Roads more dangerous than skydiving??????
mjosparky replied to kevinwhelan's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
“Safe” is a relative term. I don’t believe you can effectively compare skydiving to driving. Its apples to oranges. Little old ladies can drive a car with some degree of success. In the 30 years I was actively jumping I saw tremendous improvements in gear, technology, training and the overall intelligence of the average jumper. One thing stayed the same. The fatalities stayed in the mid to high 20’s every year. (In the US) Note Booth’s law #2: "The safer skydiving gear becomes, the more chances skydivers will take, in order to keep the fatality rate constant." The skill sets required and the workload placed on a jumper during a 60 second skydive are greater than any other activity I can think of. With the possible exception of flying a fighter jet in a dog fight. (never did understand why a plane would get in a fight with a dog) When something goes wrong, and it will, the jumper has just seconds to recognize, analyze, develop a plan of action and execute that plan. All while traveling in excess of 100 mph. All of my “friends” over the years have driven, but only a few of them were active skydivers. I can only recall 4 or 5 that died while driving or riding in a car. To count the “friends” I have lost to skydiving would use up all my fingers and toes and the list would not be complete. As Bill “Sled” Edwards used to say: “If this sports is so fucking safe, how come all me friends are dead.” My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
can one of you old-timers explain....

What would you use something like that for? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
It will protect your rig from the elements but as for security I don't think so. They will just be able to steal everything in on neat package. Not if you chained your pet Pit-Bull or Rotweiller to it while at the DZ... No dogs or kids allowed on the DZ.

Jumping again after a year - scared.

PD-143R - Maximum Exit Weight for an expert canopy pilot, 200 pounds for a WL of around 1.4:1. Your exit weight, 230+ for a WL of 1.61:1. I would say that is outside of the limits. -

You get rid of all that foam shit and you would be able to get 2 rigs in there.

That because you are a special customer.

Losing wedding ring in freefall?

Rob, How many times have I heard you say just because you can get away with it does not make it the smart thing to do? My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

Does maximum peak force depending on suspended weight? It does not seems so. The forces generated during deployment are the result of speed at deployment, load (weight) on deployment and fill time of the canopy. The final design of any canopy is a compromise of opening characteristics, performance characteristics, landing characteristics and numerous other factors. You can design a canopy to open very softly with a load of 1000 pounds but there are trade offs. For one it will pack up the size of a refrigerator and take several hundred feet to open. A small elliptical will open much faster, (harder) then a larger rectangle canopy given the same load. The fill time on the elliptical is shorter so the load slows down faster. The variables are endless and one action causes a reaction……. That is why testing is done on a new design. What looks good on paper may in fact be for shit in the real world. In the real world the manufactures of your 145 sq. ft. Cricket should not be used with an exit weight more then 160 pounds. Why do you think they would set this limit?

Is 1/2 inch difference in harness very noticeable? A Reflex rig

One of my early night jumps was the first 10 way night stack also at Perris. There is a picture of it in the Bomb Shelter near the computers. I think it was 1980 or 81. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

This is a quote from your own reference. Read it and tell me what it says. And just so you know it is not a myth, I have blown up canopies during drop tests and during live test jumps. Believe me it can happen. You need to face the fact you are in over your head on this and "Your opinion is wrong". My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals

He was a student of mine at Orange, MA. I figured it would be tough to teach someone with an aluminum pegleg to do simple things like turns, but he somehow picked it up beautifully. HW Larry was part of the original "Pieces of Eight". -
