Any other skydiving EMT's/Paramedics?

Jay Stokes - 640 Jumps In 24 Hrs (Was: 600 Jumps)
mjosparky replied to DSE's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A quote from the Porter pilot. He flew the fastest turn around at the last one at 2 minutes 5 seconds. If you can save 12 seconds every jump you have saved 2 hours. That’s extra 60 jumps. Or something like that. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
The deployment sequence starts with filling out your profile. Trust me on this.

HP landing on a( the first) demo jump?
mjosparky replied to phoenixlpr's topic in Safety and Training
Although you can requalify with just 3 jumps under an arbitrarily small canopy. This is going to be sort of tough with go fast pocket rocket. d. To requalify on a smaller canopy: (1) The rating holder must make three successive, pre-declared jumps, making the first contact and stopping within a circle ten meters in diameter with that canopy. (2) All landings must be made standing up and be verified by an S&TA, I/E, USPA Judge, or a Regional or National Director. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
Intentional cutaway: advisable? accessible?
mjosparky replied to LittleOne's topic in Safety and Training
This is the statement I was referring to when I said reckless. This type of deployment is definitely not for the less experienced jumper. Jumping a canopy in a “paper bag” can go to shit in a hurry. jmo My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Recent Para Commander Jumps?

I noticed on the second picture, 2040crop, that there are two sets of rings on the MLW. If given the choice I would attach the reserve to the top rings. If you have to use it they will make a big difference on how much the deployment hurts. -
Cary, Where did you get the little toy map? I can't read the damn thing even with my glasses.

Intentional cutaway: advisable? accessible?
mjosparky replied to LittleOne's topic in Safety and Training
How can cutting away from a tertiary harness, (presumably) going back into freefall, then going for your main be "good practice" at all for the real thing? I'd be extremely leary about this. Unless I've missed something entirely from your description of it, this sounds more to me like a one-man "Mr. Bill", and would in fact do nothing (maybe even LESS than nothing!) to reinforce good EP's, where muscle memory and PROPER PROCEDURES (read: cutaway, then pull RESERVE) are required. Practicing a cutaway followed by reaching for your BOC, to me, seems instead, rather counter to that, don't you think? Might be "fun" and "interesting" (if I understand as described), but seriously nothing more than that! Just another opinion. Blues, -Grant Excellent point Grant. A well-engineered hanging harness would be more realistic without the added risk exposure. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
HP landing on a( the first) demo jump?
mjosparky replied to phoenixlpr's topic in Safety and Training
This is a requirement to do a demo, get it “signed off” by the RD or local S&TA. It could be due the reputation of Liberty the local official does not feel the need to bird-dog your actions. Or they are just too lazy to comply with their responsibilities. Now I wonder which it is. This is inexcusable on the part of any USPA official. Their function is to assure you are within the guidelines and to assist you where needed. It is not their job to put up roadblocks. There are others that a demo team must deal with that have that job. Even with the inequities I think it is better than the old days. It is hard to believe how much this can ruffle feathers. Intentional cutaway: advisable? accessible?
mjosparky replied to LittleOne's topic in Safety and Training
That is a reckless statement. Intentional cutaways add more than just another layer of complexity to the jump. The risk of pilot error goes way up. The rig you described sounds like it is deployed by someone holding the bag as the jumper exits. This type of deployment gives 2 people a chance to screw up before line stretch. Both the jumper and the “jumpmaster”, for lack of a better word, should be experienced and have through understanding of the sequence. Another version of a cutaway rig I have seen is adding “D” rings to a sport harness and hanging a chest mount on it. This adds a load point and potential load path to the harness that it was not designed for. Without doing some sewing to the harness it is almost impossible to attach “D” rings to the MLW securely, they are free to move up and down the MLW. Even if a jumper has access to a “cutaway specific” rig I question the value of using one to “experience” what a real cutaway feels like. You will be hanging under a “good” canopy, have plenty of time to make your decision at a “safe” altitude. All your handles with right where they are supposed to be and you can see them. The canopy is not in a “malfunction”, spinning or whipping about. Everything is very calm. This type of jump is required for TSO testing and I find that they feel just like using a hanging harness with 12 to 14 inch drop built in. Nothing like what happens when a canopy turns to shit in the real world. jmo My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Any other skydiving EMT's/Paramedics?
mjosparky replied to everymansaved's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I agree with you entirely. As I posted earlier, make sure 911 is called to start EMS wheels rolling. Stabilize using basic BLS methods, assess and assist when ALS arrives. I spent 30 years on the job and retired as a Capt. The use of common sense on scene has remained the same I am sure. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -

Any other skydiving EMT's/Paramedics?
mjosparky replied to everymansaved's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Things may be different in No. Cal. But I have never heard of a PM unit being sent on a strike team. It is to valuable a resource to loose for an indeterminate time. And if the Unit I do assign to a strike team has a PM on the crew, without his equipment he is an EMT. A PM would be nice, but an off duty PM without his equipment is still just an EMT. And what drugs can you carry in your personal vehicle, outside of inventory control, and administer without violation protocols. Not to mention state and federal drug laws? Just a question, what kind of inventory control does your dept. have if all the off duty PM are running around with a car load of ALS supplies "acquired" from the station? I think you are assuming more latitude than the State H&S Code allows. PARAMEDIC DISCIPLINE STATUTE Pursuant to California Health & Safety Code Section 1798.200, the EMS Authority may deny, revoke, suspend, or place on probation a paramedic’s license for the following acts or omissions Functioning outside the supervision of medical control in the field care system operating at the local level, except as authorized by any other license or certification. You might want to do a little research and reconsider your position on this matter. My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals -
My attempt at a general explanation of waivers
mjosparky replied to lawrocket's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Have you ever heard of “no fault tort law”? Now you wouldn’t have an ax to grind with this rant would you? You have just spent a great deal of time and bandwidth running down “the vast majority” of a profession that you probably know nothing about. All groups or segments of society will have those individuals whose actions reflect poorly on the group as a whole. But when you condemn the group for the actions of those few individuals you are guilty of the very thing you are complaining about. Do you work in a profession where everyone is a saint and would never do anything to embarrass or bring shame on that profession? If so, you are indeed a lucky man. The biggest difference, no pun intended, is one weighs about 50+ pound and the other is less than 25 pounds. The military FF rig will have a ripcord for both main and reserve. Here are a couple of sites the will show a varity of HALO/HAHO rigs. ParaFlite CPS My idea of a fair fight is clubbing baby seals
