  1. When I know that lesser experienced jumpers are going to exit behind me, I usually ask someone else in the plane to make sure that they don't get out on top me. So far, it's worked. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  2. Why do we have to admit that weapons inspections were working? If they were working then why the shell game? Which time? Minutes before we invaded? Maybe, I could even buy that that's true. But was he telling the truth while he was leading UN inspectors to select sites and denying access to others? Emphasis mine. But how could we be sure? How could the world be sure? He had more than enough chances to let the inspections happen peacefully, he knew that. He shouldn't reasonably expect to continue the games forever, and we didn't allow it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  4. Why should they do anything about it? I don't like the practice, but I don' think that there's anything illegal about it. The company has contracted with various DZs to bring them business that they might not have had otherwise. The company isn't making skydiving more dangerous, nor is it making skydiving more difficult to find. As a matter of fact, they seem to be promoting the sport. I don't understand what paying GM dues has to do with running a marketing business. What do you suggest the USPA do about this? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 7. After how many months of leading UN inspectors around on a leash, denying access to sites, and jerking around the UN? Sure, he finally did it, but who knows what he did in the time between the initial 'inspections', and the time that the US demanded full access? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 8. That's a quote that people don't seem to understand... until they've been there. Here's a quote (or part of a quote) that I think I originally got from Tonto. Remember, the ground is hard, fair, and patient. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  9. If you've told him before, and he refuses to listen, you ground him. Sure, he'll probably go to another DZ, but there's nothing preventing you from calling around and making sure they're aware of his attitude and why he's not jumping at CPC anymore. Hell, most DZs probably wouldn't let him jump without an A, anyhow. Right? Try telling him that all the cool kids tend to open at, or above, 3K. With the introduction of faster, more complex, and slower opening parachutes, people are opening higher these days. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  10. Back up that statement, please. Tell us how you know that to be fact. If you can provide links to back up your claims, that would be great. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  12. I agree. The coffee maker will have the insulated carafe. It seems that the ideal coffee maker will brew with a water temp of 200 degrees Farenheight. I'm getting the impression that cheap coffee makers don't do that, but rather brew coffee closer to 160 or so, a significant difference. There have to be some real coffee aficionados out there, let's here it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

  14. It's nice to think that, isn't it? What if you managed to get away from your instructors? It's happened to the best of them. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  15. I tend to stay on the ground when the clouds are that thick. I've made a few jumps through thick clouds, and to be honest, they scare me. They scare me more when I know I'll be flying my canopy through them. Call me chicken I guess. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  16. Then I suggest that in the future you make yourself very clear and say that it's "a safety level that I find acceptable". Words are all we have to communicate around here, they're the only tool we have to get our message out. You'll find that if you're clear in your message that fewer people will have the opportunity to misunderstand, or misinterpret it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 17. Brought over from the other thread... Better yet, look at the time actually exposed to the sport, actually skydiving. If someone goes in with 600 jumps, that means he was skydiving for what, 10 hours? And had what, a total of 50 hours under canopy?* Compare that to other activities. Sorry Elfanie, the stats don't work in your favor. * Based on 60 seconds per skydive and 5 minutes per canopy ride. I think both are generous estimates. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  18. How many skydivers died in the last five years because they hit something at 120MPH? Think about it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  19. What would it take to convince you that skydiving isn't safe? Statistics? I think you'll find that true statistics back the claims that skydiving isn't safe. Really though, what will it take to convince you that skydiving isn't safe? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  20. No one here expects to do anything without risk. However, when comparing skydiving with other activities such as driving, running, basketball, football, skiing, etc... the numbers back skydiving as the riskiest sport. People die at far greater numbers while skydiving than they do in any of the activities mentioned above. Skydiving is, by definition I think, not safe. It may be that the risk is acceptable to you (it seems to be for all of us), but that doesn't make it safe. Not by a long shot. If you don't respect this sport, it will eat you, I can pretty much guarantee that. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  21. Fucking idiots. Don't they already have laws against unsafe, or unattentive driving? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  22. Low turns encompass so much more than swooping. BillVon's famous list includes a few manuvers that are the beginnings of high performance landings, but can save your ass in a non-high performance landing situation. It's not about swooping, it's about knowing how your canopy reacts to all available inputs, and more importantly, when those inputs are appropriate. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. 23. Not sure if the folks over at Gold Coast used the advice presented in the new articles, but I thought that this was an excellent article. It's a shame that it needed to be written. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
  24. We can talk until the cows come home, about the danger of low turns. Search the forums, it's not as though someone is sitting on the big secret that low turns can and do kill. Until people get out and practice what those with more experience are preaching, nothing will change. Seems to me that there's too much talk and not enough action. By the way, statistically, it's not a very safe sport. But there are threads for that discussion, too. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
