July 2003 USPA Board Meeting Highlights
Jimbo replied to quade's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Isn't this backwards? Shouldn't it be Skydive Arizona who submits a bid to the USPA? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
I often travel with a J4 concealed in a soft-sided carryon . It's never been a problem. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

OK, Miss Can't Build a Round from 23K. Cow swooper. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

You're right, but until they are on the list of items that CAN be carried on board we're going to experience trouble from misinformed security staff. I want my representatives at the USPA to see to it that skydiving gear is specifically allowed as carry on. I want my USPA representatives to see to it that the TSA is informed about skydiving gear and the potential impact of one of their invasive inspections. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You're right, I know that and you know that, and even a lot of the gate security folks know that. However, some don't. I don't know how much experience you have traveling, but the terminal security staff and the gate agent really do have the final say. If they think it's illegal, it is. It's really that simple. This is the best advice, be polite and don't lie. That'll get you far, it really will. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

He said freefliers Stacy, not floppers. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Do you think most skydivers are ready for that at 200 jumps? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Why should people rush to get the D? What does the D license do for most jumpers? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Wow. Another non-answer! I realize it's my tax dollars at work, and as a tax payer I'll vote against the TSA everytime; I've also let my representatives know how I feel. Have you? As a skydiver, I have the USPA to represent me to the TSA. I would expect that the USPA should be able to effect some change at the TSA. I hope that the USPA can get parachute rigs specifically mentioned in the TSA book as a 'hands off' and 'harmless' item. USPA, are you listening? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

That's a nice non-answer you got there. If that's really the case, then the USPA needs to continue working with the TSA to see to it that our expensive, legitimate, and life saving equipment is not tampered with, or in this case, destroyed. What are the FAA regulations about tampering with a container sealed by an FAA certified rigger? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Lost Gear, Cranky Property Owners, and the Law
Jimbo replied to randazza's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I know a skydiver who lost his main in Farmer McNasty's field a few years ago. Everyone knew where it was, FM even admitted to having it but wanted a lot of money before he'd part with it. One phone call to the police solved his problems. People like to think that the law is as simple as finders keepers, it isn't. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. Chris posts here regularly enough, I'm sure he can take a few minutes to explain the differences between the 21 and the 27. Hopefully we'll get an answer a bit more detailed than "6 cells". I really am curious, since I'm not likely to jump one of these canopies in the next few years I can't experience it, but I think I can probably understand it if it's explained to me. Hopefully, while he's here, Chris can take a few minutes to answer a question about this quote: What is an experienced pilot? 300 jumps? 500 jumps? Is it 500 jumps on an already equally, or similarly loaded elliptical? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

They fall faster, but there's usually no way to tell where they're going to fall. Someone doing/learning solo headdown jumps, for example, where will he end up? There's a part of me that doesn't think it's such a great idea for them to be out over other groups. You can say that people shouldn't be donig HD jumps until they have enough awareness to recognize that they're sliding all over creation, unfortunately most don't wait that long. Otherwise, I agree, this is all about horizontal separation. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Funny, I was talking about this very subject over the weekend (and a few beers so the details are a bit fuzzy). Anyhow, I think we came up with was the following: Floppers - you're never quite sure where they'll end up, but you can be reasonably sure they'll get there before the belly flyers. I think having the floppers down and open first is better than having them backslide into a belly group below them, make sense? Belly fliers (largest to smallest groups) Freefliers (largest to smallest groups) AFFs Tandems I don't think that high pullers should go out last, I think that they should go out according to the dive they're doing. The name of the game here is horizontal separation. Comments? - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Damn dude! For as much as you talk up that canopy you ought to be sponsored! That said, I'm expecting mine early next week. I feel a bit of a cold coming on, *cough* *cough* - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Seriuosly, why? It's not as though you're smearing the name of a good and honest person. Others who might come across this loser deserve to know who it is. Let's hope not. Good luck. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
Thats prabably what the nice folks at Quincy were saying....
Maybe, but now they've got the shoelace convention to deal with. Boy, I could tell you some stories..... - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed. -
One might want to consider bowling or golf. Stick around long enough and you will be witness to one of your buddies using Mother Earth as a trampoline. I don't think you can fully appreciate the consequences of the poor choices we make until you've been witness to this horrible sight. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. A few things here, first, you took my reply apart sentence by sentence. The original was a coherent set of ideas, it's completely different when viewed in the context you give us in your reply. Anyhow... What I was relaying was my witnessing the people on the smaller, more docile canopies (because they chose to be) taken out (think canopy collision and being run over on the ground) by people flying smaller, faster, canopies that they couldn't control. Think of it as someone in a parked car being run over the 16 year old in the 5.0. My point was, and still is, it's not just you (the guy flying the shit-hot canopy beyond his skill). It's everyone. Exactly. Noone wants to ban small canopies, as a matter of fact, Bill's proposal will allow you to fly whatever the hell you choose. You can graduate AFF and jump a Velocity 79 if you like. The point though of these proposals is to get education for the pilot, not the canopy. Accountability to the dead guy you just ran over is great. I'm sure he'll appreciate it. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Pay attention. Bill's latest proposal is talking simply about putting the WL chart into the SIM. No regulalation, no forced education, no nothing. Just a little bit of ink on a sheet of paper. That's good, but while you accept the blame, we're left to clean up the mess. Literally, someone needs to scrape you off the ground; figuratively, there's the PR nightmare after another 'out of control' skydiver dies under a perfectly good parachute. I don't think that's true. I think some people fly bigger canopies because they're not ready to take the risks associated with smaller, faster parachutes. I've seen these people get taken out by someone on a parachute too small and too fast for them to handle. What about them Rob? It isn't all just about you. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

I usually pull somewhere between 3 and 3.5, usually closer to 3. I've got 500ish jumps right now. - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.

Why? Is this really necessary? It seems to me that a properly maintained chest strap system is fine, even with the biggest of skydivers hanging off of them. I don't think we need a new chest strap, I think we need less complacent skydivers. My $0.02 USD - Jim "Like" - The modern day comma Good bye, my friends. You are missed.
