Not really... I got mine complete with DVD burner for about $1700, and high-end PC laptops are still in the $1.5-2k+ range.. I was thinking the same thing. Of course, my Linux servers usually get to about 1 or 1.5 YEARS before I have to restart them, and usually that's just for a kernel upgrade. I'm a programmer, not an artist. I was a hardcore Windows guy for many years, but I started using Linux at work a lot... and the Mac is my platform of choice now: All the power of a unix-based OS, with bulletproof and flawless hardware (I plugged in a digital camcorder for the first time, and it simply recognized it automatically and launched the appropriate application. Ever try that in Windows?), and a kick-ass user interface to boot. Not to mention that the Powerbook is about the sexiest laptop ever made. Naaah. There's a reason it's called "slowlaris" I'd recommend either a 100-node Beowulf cluster or an ES/390 running Linux. Those are some serious web servers there! This is probably a geek question, but have you considered (or do you currently) implement FastCGI or mod_perl for the forum scripts? It can make a _huge_ difference in the number of concurrent loads you can put through a given set of processors... But I've also just sent in a big wad of bail money, so hopefully that'll help a little.
