A great night - I got to bed just after 5am after having far too much fun. I'm now tired and disgustingly hungover! Vicki

Wow! It sounds like you had an amazing time. That part of Spain is so gorgeous and Empuria is just the most beautiful DZ. I’m so glad you had a great time! I miss Empuria so much – I haven’t been there in almost a year now… Vicki

Happy Birthday Denise – I think we met at Eloy??? Vicki

When I was doing my A-levels I actually managed to overdose on caffeine by taking something stupid like 18 pro plus in a day for a couple of days on the trot. Not recommended! My eyeballs started turning yellow! Vicki

Hey Macca – if you want a decent membership card that isn’t made of paper join the USPA! You get twice as many mags, insurance cover in the US and (the best bit!) it costs half the amount of BPA membership! Go figure… Vicki

1. OK - I understand what you're saying on this - even if someone has a truly pointless case, they can still bring it and it costs us legal fees regardless. And I guess in most cases, paying a lawyer to tell them to f*ck off is cheaper than paying them damages. Do we know if the BPA has a policy on this? If not they should have! 2. I imagine such instances are very rare (I may be wrong!). The problem seems to me to be people who are only ever going to do one jump. They bruise/sprain an ankle on landing and then decide to try to make some money fast by going to a "no win no fee" lawyer... Hmmm... there are lots of arguments against increasing temp membership (i.e. student parachutist insurance) but since they are the ones making the claims - surely they should pay?! If they're willing to pay £200 for a RAPS course, surely they'd pay £220? Vicki
-
I thought it probably was - in which case, why are we having a problem with negligence claims????? I don't understand! Vicki

I know of at least one DZ that makes students sit a written test to demonstrate that they have fully understood all the important points covered on their RAPS/AFF course before they even think about letting them jump. Any incorrect answers are then discussed between instructor and student, and both then sign to show that the student now understands the correct answer and any corrective training is also noted. Do all/most DZs do this? If not, should they? And if an allegation of negligence were to be made, would such a document not prove that actually the student did know the important stuff but just f*cked up/chose to ignore it?! To my mind this should almost completely get rid of negligence claims by students. And any that were made could surely (Matt?) be very easily defended. Vicki

Black labs get my vote every time – I used to have a beautiful black lab and your puppy dog is just gorgeous!

How many Skydivers smoke? (legal tobacco products)
vt1977 replied to Praetorian's topic in The Bonfire
Nope – I don’t smoke and never have. Why? Because it’s a filthy, disgusting anti-social habit! Vicki -
I’ll be there with gremlin (I’m a 5’4” red head, he’s 6’ with dark hair!). As for meeting time – not sure – do we have a programme for the seminars yet? Vicki

I’m in the office now and it’s 10.15am… I’m trying to be awake! Vicki

I think I need one – getting confused! Maybe that’ll be my excuse to drink myself stoooopid this weekend! Vicki

Not sure on that either Colin. Personally, I believe it is worth investing money in the National teams, particularly if they (as ours do) are prepared to put something back into the sport with roadshows etc. But either way if the BPA is not receiving Sport’s Council funding this year, is there any need for the BPA element to increase as it was my understanding that this was a pre-requisite for Sports Council funding? I hope that makes sense… Vicki
-
OK – now I may well be COMPLETELY wrong here but my impression was that our memberships had to be raised by a certain amount each year in order to maintain Sports Council funding. So if the BPA didn’t apply to the Sports Council for funding this year, then does that mean that there is no need for the BPA element of the membership to increase? Vicki

QuoteWe seem to have a few earth monkeys here. Very cool. Definitely cool - space monkeys would be ever cooler though! Vicki

Anything that isn’t American and actually contains alcohol!!!! Vicki

Even cooler – it seems you have an element and an animal – I am a fire snake. Find out what you are here: http://www.chinese-astrology.co.uk/index.html#search Vicki

Check out: http://www.new-year.co.uk/chinese/calendar.htm I'm a snake! Vicki

I don't know exactly - and that's not to say nothing. I guess (hope!) more money = more for the National teams and more coaching roadshows for the members. But that's just a guess, I don't actually know. Vicki

I don’t think most claims are from demos, but certainly the bigger ones seem to be. But yes, I agree entirely – let’s make demo jumpers/teams pay for their own insurance. In the end, most demos seem to be paid for, so it would just be another cost added to the cost of the demo and would probably not be paid by the individual jumper. I believe demos carry 13 times the risk of death/serious injury as compared with normal jumping so why are the rest of us having to pay for this increased risk? Vicki

Part (albeit a fairly major part) of the rise in membership is due to the increase in insurance. We cannot blame the BPA for the insurance element. The rise in insurance is causing a massive and potentially prohibitive increase in our membership fees. People choosing not to jump in the UK because they don’t want to pay £100+ for the privilege is NOT in the best interests of UK skydiving. As such I think it is only right that we question how the BPA spends its entire budget. Vicki
