So all you do is hate? Perhaps it stems from your festering angst due to Michigan's absence from the NCAA bracket? You need to get out more . . . Arrive Safely John

That's a classic. I printed it to put up on my board at work. Thanks, Steve. Arrive Safely John

It makes moderating a bit more difficult as well. Also, for the record, I miss the little mark that showed which threads in a forum I had posted in. Arrive Safely John

Perfectly Good Airplane Crap
slotperfect replied to Shadowplay's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I was at a St. Patty's Day party at a house heavily involved in aviation. The Dad is a pilot, and the oldest son is the youngest dual rated pilot in the US - baloon and single engine land. There are balloons, airplanes, propellers, and pilots all over the house. There is even a model of the number one Red Baron Stearman that I have actually jumped out of. I must have heard "perfectly good airplane" 50 times last night and it was driving me crazy. I asked a couple of pilots if their perfectly good airplane theory was sound, why did they spend so much time training on emergency procedures in their pilot training? When the Dad asked me if I had ever been up in a balloon (with the intention of inviting me to go for a ride), I told him only once - and I jumped out of it! It was a tough audience, but I bet the young phenom comes for a tandem with me. Arrive Safely John -
Psst! Typing in all caps is like shouting in the forums.

The Smart is a reinforced 0-3 cfm Triathlon. I participated in a side-by-side evaluation of four different sizes of PD and Smart. I jumped the PD 218R and Smart 220, loaded at 1.2:1. Both were built with bridle attachments and put on main risers. I did 5 hop and pops from 6000 feet on each canopy. The PD openings were faster and on heading, while the Smart openings were (very) slightly slower with a 45 to 90 degree turn to the left on every one. Admittedly, deploying the canopies as mains rather than with a free bag is not a fair test of reserve opening characteristics. Landing charactierstics were very similar. I was able to land the PD reserve a bit easier, but I got a little more glide out of the Smart. My personal reserve choice is a PD. Hope this helps. Arrive Safely John

What's Skydiving Magazine like?
slotperfect replied to Newbie's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
PM me your address, PayPal me the postage to UK (to be determined), and I'll send you all of 2005 and you can determine for yourself whether or not a subscription is worth it. The issues will arrive with my address cut out, but otherwise they show normal wear and tear from reading in *undisclosed* locations. Arrive Safely John -

small people/dwarfs= skydiving?????
slotperfect replied to sight_burner's topic in Skydivers with Disabilities
There was a young lady named Shelby that worked in an administrative capacity at Perris Valley around 1992. Sandy Reid made her a custom rig tp do AFF - I was training at his facility (the in Hemet, CA) when some minor alterations were being made. Also, the attached picture shows Tampa DJ Dave The Dwarf doing a tandem at Z Hills. Arrive Safely John -
Right after donning the rig I check all handles. Once we are hooked up and tightened down I check all handles again (and other things). When I stand up I check security of the drogue. On a Cessna exit I check it again before exiting to make sure it didn't move when I was getting into the door. I check all handles again after deploying the drogue. I do all of these on every single tandem jump. Arrive Safely John

What are your thoughts on Pilatus Porter aircraft?
slotperfect replied to McDirt's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
I have a lot of jumps from the Porter in the picture. That one had no seats, and we put 9 jumpers in it with the co-pilot's seat removed - it was PACKED! It can take off and land on a dime, climbs well, and has a huge step outside. The seating arrangement in one of the replies is more efficient than sitting on the floor, although I have never jumped it that way. Arrive Safely John -
I'm going home in shame to hang myself. You are the man - I am happy to take "FAA/GPO runaround" off my to-do list. Your beer is on me the next time we meet. Arrive Safely John

Sandy's "US Academy of Parachute Rigging" website: http://www.usapr.com/ Arrive Safely John

I talked to Brenda yesterday on the phone about it . . . she confirmed that I had the publication number correct, and the broken link I had was all they have as well. She said that the FAA has hung the file on their website, but they don't know where it went. I emailed GPO this afternoon . . . Arrive Safely John
-
My first reply from FAA (Airmen Certification) pointed me to the Handbook download page, which did not have a link or listing for "Parachute Rigger Handbook." My second reply told me they don't have such a thing and I should call the Government Printing Office (GPO), and the number the FAA gave me is out of service. I had no luck searching the GPO website either. I will call them first thing in the morning when the wait time is not so long. Arrive Safely John

It's the new millenium version of two soup cans and a piece of string & a stone tablet and chisel. 0300 is 3:00 A.M. for you civilians. Less traffic that time of day will make for a faster download. Arrive Safely John

Once I get the source, I plan to download it at about 0300 from a T1 line at work. Once I get it on a thumb drive or CD, I can more easily share it. Arrive Safely John

I do not have the document. I do not have access to the document. I am busting my ass via email and over the phone to get my hands on the document itself or the download link. I'm sorry that's not good enough, but it's the best I can do for now. When I get solid information, I will post it. I PM'd you the broken link - good luck with that. Arrive Safely John

I'm told that the document has been uploaded to the FAA website, and they are troubleshooting the broken link issue. Arrive Safely John
