Big congrats Katie, for reaching that milestone! Sorry I wasn't there to taste the pie. We have been pie-ing people left and right out here in AZ. John

Not quite. There are two corresponding opposing pieces of velcro at the end of the housing that mate with the piece you mentioned, that keep the drogue release handle secure. If you get back to the DZ where you made your tandem just ask them to show you. This rig is called a Tandem Vector. Arrive Safely John

The small rectangular piece you mentioned is a small piece of velcro that helps keep the drogue release handle secure until it's needed.

Both of my situations began to develop quickly as well. I attribute my quick recovery to three things: -my level of currency (regularity of tandem jumps) allowed me to recognize immediately that a side-spin scenario was developing -my training in handling a side-spin, which I have mentioned in above posts -my frequent review of all tandem emergency procedures - visualizing being in a side-spin situation and recovering from it Neither one developed any speed, and the rest of the skydive progressed as normal. The students were never the wiser. John

I have had two exits in which the students put both arms and legs forward (pike position) and went stiff as a board. Those began to turn into side-spin situations, but I used the procedure I was taught and they worked well. 1) Get big. If that doesn't bring it under control . . . 2) Place the student's hands on their thighs, wrap the students legs, and become one. 3) Roll over like a cat to get belly-to-earth and deploy the drogue. If still in the side-spin . . . 4) If drogue side up, deploy the drogue 5) If drogue side down, deploy reserve In both situations, wrapping the student up and becoming one worked like a charm. Neither one developed into a full-blown side spin. John

I have 200 tandems, mostly on Vectors & Sigmas. As far as canopies go, most of my jumps are on PD421s with about 65 on Sigma 370s. I have never had a tandem malfunction. I packed most of them myself, and I flat pack everything. John

From my experience, the 500 denier Cordura stays cleaner than the 1000 denier. John

Do you wear earplugs during the climb?
slotperfect replied to dbattman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
My helmet provides enough hearing protection for the Twin Otter, Casa, Cessnas. I do wear them in a C-130, CH-47 (the loudest of them all), and aircraft that are obviously going to be loud. However, the only residual health issue I have from 18.5 years in the Army working around airplanes is hearing loss. It's not bad, but noticeable. John -
Chris Schindler's Article - EXCELLENT!

I was there for three of th earlier attempts . . . I too got to see an end-of-day flyby. It was really cool to see that many jumpships being flown in formation with that much precision. I missed the actual 300-way record, but hats off to those who made it happen. What's next?? John -
I have always had Cordura as well. I prefer the "matte" finish of Cordura to the "shiny" apperance of Parapac. I agree that Cordura is more durable as well. John

Thanks for that! John

I got that one too. No idea who it is. I don't want any, so I hope it doesn't become a problem. John

Very handy . . . thanks!!

So . . . could you share the result of your conversation with Sun Path. Inquiring minds want to know?!?! Arrive Safely John

What DON'T you like to eat, that everyone else LOVES?

Peppermint. I love other kinds of mint, but I just don't care for peppermint. Apparently it's really popluar, though - I see peppermints in a basket as I exit almost every restaurant. John -
I read a quote from Mother Theresa that fits here: "The reason that we don't have peace is that we have forgotten that we belong to each other." John

I use a locking pull up cord with a figure-8 (ugly) knot in the bottom. I compress the grommets completely together before I start packing. I also use a t-handle bodkin with a rubber band on the end through both grommets, just to give the molar shaped folded canopy a definite division in the bag to mold themselves around. All of our Student Javelins also have Expert CYPRES installed. We also use BOC deployment. I have no issue with using the Expert vs. Student model CYPRES in these rigs. Arrive Safely John

Parts of North Carolina can get really hot in the Summer too, although not as overwhelming as Florida. My parents live in the mountains of Western North Carolina where the temperature and humidity in the Summer is really pleasant. No skydiving nearby though! The closest DZ to them in in Seneca, SC. Chuck is right. As long as you're not a truly "fair weather" person, and are willing to put on the layers and be a little cold, you can do about anything year round here. We get snow sometimes, but it doesn't stay long. If you want more Winter, you just go West to the mountains. Arrive Safely John

For me, it's up to a number of criteria, and finding the best balance between them. I have been in the Sandhills of North Carolina for 18 years - longer than I have lived anywhere else. I have lived in this house for 7 years, longer than any other as well. Admittedly it was the job that brought me here, and partially the job that keeps me here. The town I live in I could stay in for many more years and be happy. I have a transition point coming up for myself as well, not sure exactly when yet, but within the next 3 years for sure. I will likely go where the second career opportunities lie, but I will be careful to preserve the other important things in life in their respective places on my priority list. This all sounds very general; I'm keeping it that way so I don't write an epic. If you'd like to talk about this more over the phone, let me know and I'll PM you my number. If it's this area you choose, I'll help you however I can. Arrive Safely John
