Raeford is closed for the holidays, so I will be running a few errands, playing my 007 Nightfire game I got for Christmas, putting some stuff on eBay, and having dinner with a family friend. Arrive Safely John

If my life were such that I were single, and my career and living arrangement allowed me to do so, I would do it. I don;t plan on creating that opportunity for myself though . . . I am happy with the balance between skydiving and family and work that I have now. Arrive Safely John

I got mine last week as well. I actually emailed them to ask when it would be delivered, and it showed up a few days later. Arrive Safely John

Orlando VWT Pros: -the mirror that allows you to park in front of it and fine tune your body position -clean air everywhere (except a little mush near the doors) -lifting power of the system (I am a big guy and had no issues) Cons: -difficult to fly consistently when it's windy outside. A gust of wind outside "cuts" the win out from under you while flying. -if it's raining outside, it's raining inside Arrive Safely John

On rigs with an external pilot chute, like a Javelin, the cutter will be placed on the bottom. On rigs like a Vector II with an internal pilot chute, it will be on the closing flap, otherwise when the closing loop is cut, the pilot chute spring will have to fight the friction of dragging the cut loop through all the grommets to get free. That's what they tell me . . . Arrive Safely John

I'm not really afraid of heights, just respectful of the dangers involved in, say, climbing up on my roof. I know that if I fall off my roof, I will get hurt. I don't get that feeling skydiving, EVER! Many many people that I invite to come make a tandem jump tell me they couldn't because they're afraid of heights. I truly believe it's a result of them allowing the world to influence their belief in themselves. This May, my sister made a tandem with me, deciding to confront her fear of heights and just trust me. She closed here eyes a couple of times in drogue fall, but she did wonderfully and had an incredible experience. Sooooo many people are missing out because they are selling out on themselves! If you approach skydiving as you approach parenting, from a place of responsibility, you will be a safe and responsible skydiver. You will also inspire your daughter to be courageous, to face challenges that life brings, to face fears that the world creates for us head on and find joy in facing them. I have two children, both of which want to skydive when they get old enough (they are 11 and 8). My son started working at the dropzone, helping out at the school doing odd jobs. They see what I do as exciting, but a normal part of my life. Personally I do not consider it irresponsible or a source of unnecessary risk. Skydiving is as much a part of who I am as any other choice I make. Some people see the world as it is, and ask 'Why?' I see the world as it could be, and ask 'Why not?' --George Bernard Shaw Only those who will risk going too far can possibly find out how far one can go -- T. S. Eliot

Personally, I check my equipment after receiving a pin check, touching my handle only once (sometimes my BOC hacky handle once more before I climbout). That is my routine. Doing tandems, I check all my handles after I get a gear check in the mockup area, in the aircraft after I hook up my student & tighten the side straps and stow the excess, and after exiting and deploying the drogue. I personally do not question others' routines, rather I take comfort in the fact that they actually have a routine they stick to. An example of this is the well-known highly experienced former world champion skydiver I know with 12,000+ jumps that practices his EP's in the aircraft on every jump. My choice is to encourage people to have a routine, and show them mine in case it might just work for them. I do agree that being deliberate and specific in a routine is best, not necessarily multiple repetitions.

The issue I have here, having had personal experience with this, is that even when responsible, experienced, reliable people give the media SPECIFIC and ACCURATE information, using SPECIFIC terms (not slang), the media will "interpret" the interview so the viewers will understand it, or report it filtered with their own editorial opinions. Facts are facts. When they are filtered with editorial opinion they become opinions, not facts. The end result is a report that is unclear, and not helpful to the situation at all. Arrive Safely John

Hi Josh! From your profile I'm guessing you are at Ft. Hood. The nearest USPA dropzone to you is Skydive Temple A directory to the rest of the Texas USPA DZs can be found HERE On this site, if you SEARCH by typing "Temple" in the "Home Dropzone" block, you will find there are lots of Dropzone.com members who call Temple home that might be of some help.
