Senator Responds to CNN Hit Piece On Global Warming
speedy replied to rushmc's topic in Speakers Corner
A yet again Kallend misses the point. Whether the planet is warming or not was not what I was debating. I was only debating if it is possible for the current rises in CO2 concentration to cause a measurable impact on global temperature. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

See, you can have a discussion in speakers corner without it remaining a pissing contest. -

It appears to me that the sun has also a variabilty in the radiation it emits. Why should the 3 watts from CO2 be so much more problematic than the suns variability? Source for the graphic http://www.ips.gov.au/Educational/1/3/3 Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

Sorry, but the only difference I can see between the two graphs is that one has 330 ppm CO2 and the other has 1000 ppm CO2 written on it. To me the curves are virtualy identical. OK - I studied them a little longer and now I see the difference. Obviously you believe this difference is crucial to balance of global temperature. Even though such a small change in absorbtion of infrared radiation would not warm the planet to any significant degree, the balance would be disturbed which could have disasterous concequences. Correct? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

I was under the impression that it would not widen. I thought that the peaks could get higher, but once the wave length is blocked that is irrelevant. Are you saying that with more CO2 in the atmosphere it will start absorbing at the 1 micrometer wavelength? Thanks for sticking to my point. -

The attached radiation absorption window graphic gives an idea of which molecules absorb various wavelengths. Where the shaded portions completely span between 2 lines it indicates that particular wavelength is fully absorbed and the "window" is saturated (or said to be "closed"). Rather obviously, once a window is saturated adding more gases with the same properties will do nothing. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

No one's talking about not being able to breathe the air. No one has said, ever, that rising CO2 levels will make it hard to breathe. That's not the issue. Ah. Semantic games! Everyone loves sematics games. I used the word "IS" not "WAS" so your question is meaningless! It's too bad so many discussions about this end up as semantic games and pointless "You said" "No I didn't" "I said" "No you didn't" arguments. It's why most people ignore most such discussions, and why nothing much ever comes od them. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

You are a physisist correct? The global warming scare was created by a chemist, namely, Margaret Thatcher. Try posting a valid arguement instead of "Yeah! Billvons right" Physicist, actually, and now an engineer. I suspect Margaret Thatcher had a better grasp of science than you do even though she became a politician. Why don't you tell us about the ozone hole next? Again, a pointless post. 1st a spelling correction. (my bad) 2nd an assumption based on little real knowledge (although it is probaly true) 3rd a comment that has nothing to do with the effects of CO2 in the atmosphere on global warming. OK, I'll quadruple the amount of CO2 in the air. The human body does not seem to have any problem breathing the air at all. . Where did I say there was significant warming? Where did I deny there was warming? How long have we been measuring temperatures? Before 1600 we are using guesses. Then we tack on the end real measurements. Interesting. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

Now some people think that doubling the amount of CO2 in the atmosphere can't possibly have any effect. They're wrong about that, too. Try doubling the amount of potassium in your body, and see if it is "utter folly" that such a small change can affect how you live. >I never said there was no such thing as warming. Yes you did! No I didn't You claimed it was not measurable (which isn't true) and then that it was only .01F (which also isn't true.) Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -
Damm right, but if they spoke the truth, could we handle it? Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

And again to be sure you understand, CO2 is not causing any percieved global warming. If we come to the conclusion the planet is warming CO2 in the atmosphere cannot be the cause. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

In terrms of your temperature example - If _your_ temperature increased by that amount (1 deg F) 0.01 F it would indicate you might be sick[/S] nothing. If you ignored the fever, it might just make you very sick later. Heck, most moms understand that. Predictions Wild guesses put the eventual increase of 3 to 10 degrees F by the end of the century. If your temperature went up by 10F, you'd probably end up dead very quickly. I fixed that for you The planet is a much more complicated organism than you are, but it is still vulnerable to those sort of temperature changes. We've seen the effects of minor temperature change on the biosphere already. >Well guess what? That's basically what we are talking about with all this >fuss over trivial increase in the trace gas, carbon dioxide. Nope. We're talking about the permafrost melting and releasing its methane into the atmosphere (that's happening now.) We're talking about entire forests drying out and burning (that's happening now.) We're talking about losing entire ice sheets to warming (that's happening now.) We're talking about changes in global ocean circulation (that hasn't happened yet, fortunately.) The problem with the deniers who claim "there's no such thing as global warming!" is that people can SEE it. It's become a big enough issue that it is affecting people all over the world. It's easy to ignore it if you compare it to an air conditioned house. If it means that your house is falling through the permafrost in Alaska, no one's going to believe someone who tells them it's not really happening. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl -

Peel back all the onionskin layers of hypothesis, guesswork and extreme claims what we are left with is a possible one-sixth of one degree warming from increased atmospheric carbon dioxide overlaid on a background temperature of 287 or 288 Kelvin (depending of reference used). How are we supposed to distinguish a change of ~0.05% from all the noise of natural variability? That's the equivalent of having your optimally air conditioned home go from 24 °C to 24.012 °C. Would it be worth big $s to you to reduce it by that 0.012 °C? Well guess what? That's basically what we are talking about with all this fuss over trivial increase in the trace gas, carbon dioxide. How many of us have done this? I have. Fickle wind killed man wearing parachute Fickle wind killed man wearing parachute By Alex Branch Star-Telegram Staff Writer An Erath County man fell to his death Saturday after becoming airborne in a parachute while tethered to a parked truck, a state trooper said Wednesday. Kelly Mills, 33, and some friends found the old parachute while cleaning out a barn, said Cpl. Kenneth Bratton of the Texas Department of Public Safety. The group wanted to try out the parachute, and Mills volunteered to be strapped in, the friends told investigators. They took the parachute to a field off County Road 208 and tethered Mills to a pickup truck with a rope, Bratton said. The friends held the parachute open until the wind caught it and lifted Mills 30 to 40 feet in the air, Bratton said. "Unfortunately, the wind stopped, and he fell straight down," he said. Wind gusts in Erath County were 15 to 20 mph Saturday afternoon but with many calm periods, according to the National Weather Service. The Tarrant County Medical Examiner has ruled Mills' death an accident. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

I just love the people that ignore where the electricity for such cars come from. Its the same with fuel cells, you have to create the hydrogen first using electricity. Where does that electricity come from? COAL / OIL / NUCLEAR fired power plants. It is much more efficient putting oil in cars rather than using it to create electricty which in turn is used to power cars. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

There must be more than what you have posted. If that is the only text in the letter and it does not say what you have done, bin it and forget it. Another option is to put it in an envelope, attach a note saying "I don't understand!" and post it to the Swiss police

I've lost count of how many times people have typed ADD when they mean AAD. The people with budget constraints, they will just have make sure they win the prize money. I can think of many reasons why having an audible is a good idea when wing suit jumping but would prefer not to discuss them in this thread. This is just about getting a lot of wing suit flyers together for a great weekend with a chance to win the prize money. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl

Yep. The R.A.G.E. from Paratec is a case in point. The nose design meant they had to find ways of speeding up the openings. The method used was a big hole in the slider. Dave Fallschirmsport Marl
