Thats like calling a PD 9 cell a Sabre 2! It is a GLSxf not a crossfire with sail. I wanna see one and fly one too! My next/2nd canopy will most definitely be a GLSxf loaded at around 1.8 because it fills the voids that my JVX doesn't ( tight demos, speed flying on mellow slopes and big ways). I'm sure they will perform as announced. Jyro and Jim Slaton know canopies well enough to make that judgment. Thanks, Rhys "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Immigrating to NZ to do tandems, info plz if you've done it
rhys replied to AdD's topic in Instructors
ahh what's VPP? I grew up in ch-ch never heard of it. Fern hill is less expensive than central QT but still expensive and is a permafrost freezer in the winter. Piling yourself into a rental place like sardine can is 1 way of getting around the expensive rent I suppose. Glenorchy is amazing and i really miss jumping there. If you have a good vehicle that is probably the nicest option, as long as the 'filmies' are not in town while you are looking for accommodation. The price tends to quadruple during those periods. Since 'lord of the rings' rental prices have never been the same. Glad to hear you had a good time! That really depends on where you are, Queenstown for example is very expensive, I 'm not sure about Taupo but is is a small rural town so probably not too expensive. In Auckland rent is expensive but food is cheap. You have to know where you are going to get a definitive answer to that question. we have a job going here in africa if you want! You will spend no more than $500 a month on all expenses here in africa and you have a retainer of double that! I can tell you want to go to NZ though and I don't blame you. You can get a GLSxf right now if you want. you can get a Neos too. There may not be info on the website etc. Actual user feedback like you have here is always more valuable than the companies opinion. The company will always say; the best openings, the best flight characteristics, the best flare etc. you either want one or you don't. Do eeeeeeeet! Your best bet was Skydive Auckland, but that was when i left NZ over a year ago. I know the DZ is going through some trouble at an ownership level at the moment. but that is what you get when you don't pay your staff eh! Skydive Abel Tasman was probably #2 for fun jumpers and much better scenery and owner. They can do as much AFF as tandem some days and they have the best landing area in the whole world!!!! The south island is much nicer than the north island too! Have fun and say hi to everyone for me! My ass, they are not the ones convinced the whole world wants to attack them! They have go on with it it since WW2. They make the best cars, the best electronics and have a very low crime rate. Japanese are cool and know what the word economy actually means. Unlike some countries we know! My family was held as prisoners in Sumatra during WW2 and my father was born in a Japanese war camp. Does our family hold grudges against them? No, we drive Japanese cars, we watch Japanese televisions, listen to Japanese stereos and use Japanese video cameras. I have Japanese friends and they are really nice people that also know what self respect is.. Japan is cool, they have moved on. Some countries still have their heads too far up their own asses to change...and they are still bombing random countries for financial gain because they cant build an 'economy' that is sustainable without mass consumption and war! I wouldn't say ugliest system, just the ugliest handle. I have seen much worse cutaway systems where a split pin is attached to the handle and the system requires no force/tension on the strap to release. Now that is ugly. At least the one in those photos will save your life if you have an entanglement with the main. The handle is F*!King ugly though. Howard stops Oz Cricket team going to Zimbabwe
rhys replied to shropshire's topic in Speakers Corner
....... for what reason? Mugabe was voted in by the people, through force but he was voted in. There are ways to resolve economies other than invading them with military power and forcing regime change. Fortunately I very much doubt the USA will intervene. What is in it for them? Check out a couple of photos from Zimbabwe from a boogie there only weeks ago...attached. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix -

agreed, I was just in Zimbabwe and what a wonderful country with wonderful people, wildlife and of course one of the 7 natural wonders of the world 'victoria falls'. The place has really hit rock bottom. I would like to see Mugabe out, but not the American way please....... Do You Really Want to Reduce the Price of Gas in the US?
rhys replied to Gawain's topic in Speakers Corner
Start driving japanese cars! you could save 5 gallons a month and still drive fast! A Toyota DOHC TURBO small car would kick most American cars asses and still only burn 1/4 of the fuel. That is the reality of it. The USA has had it too good for too long with oil consumption. It is time to tighten your belts and think sensibly for a change. Stopping people driving behemoth 6litre, 8 cylinder 4x4's to drop the kids off at school would be start. ...... There fixed it for ya This principal will help you with everything. If you are relaxed you don't make as many mistakes, you make the customer more relaxed, the TM's job is easier...your job is easier, you flying skill improves faster, etc. Learning to relax is being comfortable. If you are shy? it can be harder but just be (the professional side of) yourself and it becomes second nature in time. Try to move your focus on making the shots the correct length and getting interesting new shots and angles. Your job is to make a mint video. Keep it fast paced and exciting without using too many effects etc. Intensive interviews can be boring and can also make the customer feel uncomfortable which is not ideal. Spontaneous bursts of emotion or random reactions are my favorite in the vids but hard to capture if you are not on the ball. Use all the cool things that other people use and omit all the dumb stuff and then you have your own style to work with. Become the perfectionist that doesn't beat yourself up about making a mistake and you will be amazing! Most importantly Smile and Have fun! Tip; use the 'edit search' function when you make a mistake and do the shot again. tdog and glitch have summed up my opinion on the Skyhook. For those that say added complexity will induce rigging errors?!? Find a new rigger and have an understanding yourself of how the skyhook works! It is not rocket science. It is a piece of aluminum, some string! and a very ingenious way of opening a reserve parachute faster and safer! The skyhook eliminates the malfunctions that make me feel an RSL is more unsafe, than no RSL. Therefore I feel the Skyhook is 'MUCH' safer than no Skyhook. My 1 instance that I could have needed it was when I was going through my AFF training. We had a camera guy there filming with no plan for break off (bad idea). Of course the IE fumbled the ripcord and the acting JM1 took his time to pull for him. I had to stick around as JM2 and once the parachute deployed i turned and tracked. Before deploying i could see the camera guy above me and tracking on the same trajectory as me, we both changed our trajectory but to the same direction at first so i went the other way and deployed as soon as we could. This all happened very quickly but i was in the saddle of my parachute at Just over 1000' I had no AAD at the time and it wouldn't nessecarily work in that situation either. If that was a malfunction then I would/could have been in real danger....or maybe not? But the moral is; Bad things can and do happen and usually at the worst possible moment. Skyhooks are the way Mmkay! "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Daedalus GLSxf 119 or you will probably want a 109! http://www.nzaerosports.com/GLSXF.htm You know you want to. That canopy will hold its value! "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Using a flexible cable to close the container instead of a pin
rhys replied to autoset's topic in Gear and Rigging
It is funny (peculiar) that i asked the same question in my first week of skydiving. Make sure your gear is all compatible (main, reserve and container), if it is then there should be sufficient tension on the closing loop to make a closing pin work as it was intended. If the closing pin is loose (at all), then only jump the gear if there is a flexipin but avoid jumping it at all. it is not safe to have a premature deployment. The hidden [monetary] costs of skydiving.
rhys replied to gontleman's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
There is an old saying that is appropriate here, You first jump costs you between $200 and $300....and at least half of your salary for the rest of your life. You did say to only mention the $$ factor it goes much deeper than that. Enjoy, Rhyso "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix -
I think you are on the money! It depends where you are. About 4k's from where I write this, there is a school with a Muslim mosque, a Hindu temple and a Christian church (dunno which type) bordering the school. Children from all faiths attend this school. No problems! It also depends if there is whack job preaching or not! I don't think the locals here actually understand the faiths enough to be fanatical about them and you hardly ever see a Tanzanian lose their temper anyway. You do see me whacking my head against the wall with frustration sometimes though! "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Hi all, I couldn't be bothered to read all 7 pages of posts. so i might sound like a scratched record but... This is definitely a step in the right direction. What I don't agree with is By that rationale someone that S turns in to land in generally a straight line instead of the suggested landing pattern, should therefore do the said approach in the high performance landing area? not a very good idea! We need to think of the swoopers' safety as well as the 'Majority' to keep us all safe. "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix

Removable slider - opening differences
rhys replied to MrBrant's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
I have only jumped my stock slider once, but with a para-concepts RDS slider my JVX opens sweeeeet. not long not hard but soft. It is a little trickier to keep the grommets sitting on the stops when packing but aside from that, no difference with the packing and opening sequence. i have even got my digits to attach the item without fumbling too much now so it only takes a couple of minutes. i wouldn't like to have a slider with the cables running through the middle but that is just me. Blue skies Rhys "When the power of love overcomes the love of power, then the world will see peace." - 'Jimi' Hendrix -
From my end it seems BIGUN is on the money. Throw in a significant increase in tandem numbers and a decline in sport jumpers and then the stats change again. My last full year at a busy DZ in NZ 2-3 years ago the busiest day/capacity at the DZ was 140 customers my busiest day was 18 jumps and I did 1100 jumps as a camera guy. over the last year the a friends has done at the same DZ over 20 jumps in a day and around 1800 jumps for the year and the DZ's busiest day/capacity is over 200 tandems. I work at a brand new Tandem DZ in africa and we are starting to get busy now tandems, tandems, tandems. More and more people use these forums also so more incidents are getting reported. I'm sure there are plenty of really 'full on' incidents that would have happened in the past but were only noted by the local area emergency services. these days such things are well reported.
