A sad note on the good times Jim Hooper wrote about. I received my July issue of Skydiving and in the "Maybe You've Heard" column is a mention of Ruth Howell , she died in Florida May 23rd from cancer. I jumped with Ruth at Z-Hills and Deland in the 70's, she was a friend and good Skydiver. Another role model among Women. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

Look like what I saw. Carl Daugherty and Charlie McGurr warped up at the 1976 Turkey meet in Z-Hills. They hit a metal roof that flexed and absorbed their impact. Carl was released form the Hospital that night, Charlie stayed overnight. Thinking about it now I can hear them hitting the roof. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

Howard, Thank you for the pictures, I'm copying and sending them around. I started jumping in Darbydale Ohio in August 1969 with the Columbus Skydivers. They were still pissed off about the name change from PCA to USPA and some thought the movie "Gypsy Moths" was state of the art Skydiving. One of the jumpers (John Simpkins) had a collection of Skydiver magazines and Parachutist from day one, I borrowed them all and studied the early days. The club had a collection of old 16mm movies too. It was a fun crowd that did more partying then jumping. I switched to Xenia Ohio in 1970---the Beech came by and I got on. 1995 in Honolulu Hawaii I was introduced to the Bausch & Lomb (Polymacon) Soflens 38 also known as Optima FW. I only wear contact lens for sport's and don't over wear them. Mom always said I looked better in glasses, girlfriends have disagreed. Last year I was introduced to the CIBA (Lotrafilcon) night & Day soft lens and Systane eye drops. I carry a small container of the eye drops in my jump suit. The CIBA lens are much better in clear vision and fit. I use the mono vision set up with the left eye being dominent for far away and the right for close up with no problems. My distant vision with the CIBA lens is 20/10. The best goggles I've found are SportRX G103 I have yet to find one Ophthalmologist MD who advocates LASIK. Skydives I know who have had LASIK had mild myopia to start with. Without corrective lens my vision is 20/400. There is some close up work I can do very well I'm diffinetly going to check on Synergeyes I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

I owned an Eclipse, 1998-1999. I had two different riggers in Hawaii repacking the reserve in the Eclipse, both said it was a Vector copy. I replaced it with a second Racer, had lots of time to compare. I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.

what was the worst canopy youve ever jumped?
3331 replied to caspar's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
Para Mount 5 Cell. I jumped it from mid 1980 to August 1981. Landed real hard, wouldn't flare or slow down, got renamed Para Thud. I wasn't the only one that was disappointed in the hype compared to real performance I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving. -

Federal Aviation Administration Proposes New Fees for ATC
3331 replied to 3331's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
From the USPA web page. On February 14, the FAA released its plan to revamp Air Traffic Control to a cost-based system funded by a combination of user fees, fuel taxes, and the general fund. Though the FAA has not yet finalized all details, it does say that “Air traffic user fees would apply to commercial flights by turbine-powered aircraft (jets and turboprops).” Exactly how the rates will be structured is still to be determined, but there would be separate fees for en route, terminal, and other airspace. The FAA intends to introduce congestion fees for those that use the airspace around the 30 large, congested hub airports. Whether those fees would be restricted to the surrounding Class B airspace, or beyond, is not specified. The FAA also proposes an increase in the federal fuel tax to 70 cents per gallon on both avgas (currently taxed at 19.3 cents per gallon) and jet fuel (currently taxed at 21.8 cents per gallon). Already, there are many in Congress who have expressed displeasure and disagreement with the administration’s proposal. Clearly there will be a political battle before this is decided. USPA staff is reviewing the fine print for details. More information is on the FAA web site here: http://www.faa.gov/regulations_policies/reauthorization/ I Jumped with the guys who invented Skydiving.
