  1. I was lucky enough to have a friend with loads of frequent flier miles...he wanted someone to go to Norway with him. My airfare was free, but my itinerary was brutal, with four flights to get there, 5 flights on the way back, and several *extremely* long layovers. Well worth it, though! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.

  3. I was doing a two way baSe jump, from about 340' into a narrow ravine. The other jumper was trying to get a really close opening shot. Well, he got a little too close, and fell through my canopy as it opened. It collapsed the right side, pretty much to the center cell and spun me 180. I grabbed the rear risers, got it reinflated, looked ahead and saw that I was heading for trees at the side of the ravine. I turned 90 left, and immediately had to flare to land in the only clear area around. Much to my surprise, I was never scared. My sig line explains why. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  4. In general, Sam Adams isn't bad for a pseudo microbrew. However, I'd doubt it's anywhere near as good as Youngs - Double Chocolate Stout. It comes in a 20ish oz bottle or a nitrogen charged can. I recommend the can. A truly unique and tasty beer. It's not sweet.... -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  5. I more or less agree with the other posts so far. I'd add that if you are primarily jumping out of 182s or other cramped airplanes, a side mount is more practical. I jump a side mount for that reason, but now that a Caravan is likely to be available most of the time, I'd certainly consider top mount in the future. --------- My dream set up involves a PC style camera(commonly used in sidemounts) that can be layed on its side with the image somehow recorded as right side up. Something like that would be super clean mounted flat on the top of the helmet. It'd be sweet if Sony made the orientation selectable, or if you could open up the camera and rotate the CCD 90 degrees or something. I'm afraid to even open up my camera to see if it's possible. If anyone dares, let me know how it turns out. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 6. Lowes/Eagle has the best selection of random fasteners and hardware in my area. Home Depot might carry them, too. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  7. IMO, that's insane: If you can't discuss these issues with family and friends, who can you discuss them with? One reason discussing a controversial issue with a friend is good is that you already know something about them and want to maintain the relationship. That's extra incentive to stay polite, and really try to understand their point of view. It's far easier to dismiss someones differing viewpoint when you don't know them. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 8. No. The audio on the blow is way too early, but the voice is more or less in sync. Also, it doesn't look like the book actually makes contact, and she appears to be smiling even after being struck. I know, I'm a killjoy, but I enjoy it. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 9. Anyone remember the old Javelin ads with Derek pointing towards the articulated harness ring? What he was really doing was concealing how much exposed reserve cable there was on that design. Kind of annoyed me. Mind you, I still jumped one and never had any trouble. It was still deceptive IMO. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  10. FYI: Atheism is to religion as baldness is to hair color. -Josh Increasingly recognized by whom? If I don't believe in unicorns, is my lack of belief an act of faith? Of course not. Must I be able to prove that unicorns don't exist for my disbelief to be accepted at face value? I hope not. Am I member of the religious cult of unicorn denial? Your assertion is silly at best. It wasn't all that thoughtful. Did you miss my response pointing out the obvious flaws in logic, or did you just ignore it? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 11. Pussy. Seriously: Don't drive or dive. Don't take too many or drink too much ie: be cautious. For a healthy adult that plans to sit at home and veg out, it's probably not a big deal. However, acetaminophen (tylenol) and alcohol can be very bad for your liver in excess. IIRC, they both use the same metabolic pathway, and if you overload your liver, the tylenol gets broken down by a different chemical reaction. The byproduct is poisonous. So if you take one darvocet and have a beer, you should be ok, but if you've been taking them all day, and start drinking, or if your liver is already damaged, you're asking for trouble. YMMV. If you decide you don't want to risk it, send my your meds! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 12. Oh boy. It's really hard to be polite when someone posts something as absurd as this, but I'll try. Exegesis: may I be so bold as to suggest that if it were true that everyone that truly studied Christianity reached the same conclusions as you, we wouldn't be having this discussion. In fact, there would be very little disagreement at all. As it is, even self described Christians can't agree on all that much, and millions more don't believe any of it, or believe in something that is mutually exclusive. Josh Macdowell's "research" ought to be embarrassing to any thinking Christian. Here's a link to a web site that absolutely shreds his arguments and shows him to be either dishonest or dumb. I leave it to the reader to decide which: http://www.infidels.org/library/modern/farrell_till/unique.html Want to put some serious money on that bet? Pretty please? I could use a new base rig, a wingsuit, and a new camera. How about a $4000 challenge? Duh. What's your point? There's a huge difference between proof of the existence of a man named Jesus and proof of his divinity. Look at all the strange logic and concepts you have to use to defend your belief (in no particular order): 1) If it doesn't make sense, it's because I'm not as smart as god, I just don't understand. 2) The lord works in mysterious ways. 3) If you don't believe, you haven't truly studied the bible. Oh yeah: #4) If all else fails, scare them into professing faith. Whatever gets you through the day! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 13. Another thread reminded me of a funny story with an important point. I was at a well known, legal base site, watching this dude from Paraguay getting ready to exit. He looked over his right shoulder and asked the guy standing behind him for a final gear check. The guy started to fumble around, and then asked "is that a velcro or a pin rig?" The Paraguayan's confidence seemed a bit shaken. He turned to me and asked me to check his gear instead. Everything looked in order and off he went, no troubles. Whether it's Skydiving or BASE, don't assume that the guy next to you is qualified to give you a gear check, and don't be afraid to admit that you aren't familiar with someone else's gear. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 14. QuoteYou can fall out. If you notice it undone in freefall, you can dump "safely". All you have to do (aren't those words magic?)(This was read here at dz.c) is reach across and grip the right MLW with your left hand as you go into pull (keep symmetric) and after you dump out your PC, bring your right hand in to grip your left MLW. Then, hopefully, you won't fall out. Quote If you simply put yourself in a head high position prior to deployment, opening force should be channeled through your leg straps, and the loose chest strap won't be much of a concern. Of course, I'd prefer not to test either method. It's far easier to incorporate multiple gear checks into your routine. Ideally, you should be ready to exit the plane before you even get on board. I generally give myself and those around me at least a visual check upon boarding, after undoing seatbelts, and just prior to jump run. If something doesn't look right, ask. I've never been offended or offended anyone by doing so. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 16. Alright, my cell phone is crapping out on me and it's no longer under warranty. I'd like to just buy a new phone and throw my SIM card in it, but no one will sell me a phone without a new service contract or a ridiculously high price/activation fee, etc. Any way around it? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 18. I agree with much of what you wrote, but this is silly. Atheism means that one doesn't believe in god(s). Nothing more. There is no claim or requirement to disprove anything at all. Nor is any sort of denial involved. Compare god belief with the tooth fairy (or ghosts, car key gnomes, whatever): Do you believe in the tooth fairy? Can you prove the tooth fairy doesn't exist? Are you in denial about the existence of the tooth fairy? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 20. I was never concerned about PCs blowing up. I always thought the load tapes were to promote symmetrical inflation/reduce distortion of the fabric, thereby reducing oscillation and improving heading performance. Hopefully someone with experience building and testing PCs will weigh in here. I'd ask on blinc, but I'm still having trouble posting over there. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 21. It's reassuring to know that you have been blessed with the ability to divine with absolute certainty what others have failed to reach agreement on in a couple of centuries. Personally, I am far more concerned with the erosion of constitutional rights other than my right to bear arms. My mind and voice are far more powerful than any bullet, and recent threats to my ability to use them are greater. I think your analogy is flawed. The connection between books and education is much more straightforward than the connection between guns and an organized militia. That is, while guns have a lot to do with being well armed, they have nothing to do with being well organized. Unfettered access to books on the other hand has a great deal to do with being well educated. Says you. I think that if the intent is as you interpret it and it were written today, the first half of the sentence would be omitted entirely. Thus giving us the straightforward "The right of the people to keep and bear arms shall not be abridged." -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 22. Blur, from the self titled album "Blur" It's called "Song 2" No wonder you were having trouble, everyone knows it as the "Woo hoo!" song. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 23. Clear as mud. The very quotes you cite are confused and inconsistent. Here Lee specifies that the militia be properly formed and trained. Lee thinks that the milita should be regulated. It's not at all clear what Lee thinks the militia should be. At any rate, he thought the constitition ought to secure a "genuine militia", whatever that means, but the only reference the constitution makes to a militia is very much open to debate. The only thing it states clearly is that said militia be well organized. "It is asserted by the most respectable writers upon government, that a well regulated militia, composed of the yeomanry of the country..." - John Dewitt There's that pesky reference to well oganized militia and training again. If it were truly synonymous with the people, they would have simply said the people have the right to keep and bear arms and not repeatedly emphasized the necessity of a well organized militia, as evidenced by the historical quotes that *you* provided. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 25. Grrrr.... I'm suffering from a nasty cold/flu to the point of skipping a friend's bachelor party tonight. You've gotta go and add insult to injury by wasting Scotch by pounding it? Please tell me it isn't single malt! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote.
