  1. My internal dialogue while viewing: Why would he be surprised by our hurry to grow up? Why would he be surprised by *anything*? He's God after all.... Say that's a nice cliff! Is that in New Mexico? I wonder if it's jumpable? Ah...that's a nice sentiment...yeah, there's some words of wisdom here... . . . . . zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 2. Just to clarify: With regards to TSOs and FAA rules, main risers aren't considered to be part of the system. However, when buying and selling gear, main risers typically stay with the container rather than the main parachute. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. 3. You are making the mistake of taking his word at face value that this person doesn't know what a computer virus is. If the accuser is referring to the posting I think he is, that wasn't the issue at all. The subject knew what a virus was, and was just asking for some specifics about a particular file type. You shouldn't assume that when someone wants to criticize another, that they are providing you with a correct characterization of that other person's messages. He biased his description in order to make you believe what he wanted you to believe. If the facts were as you say, I would agree with you. But they aren't. Quote John: I didn't say anything in particular was fact. Read my post again, and you'll realize that I made a point of qualifying my statements, ie: "XXL said his intelligence was questioned...." -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  4. I'm fortunate enough to have spent a day and a half celbrating life with an entire group of people that do that for me. Thanks to all you circus freaks...you know who you are.
  5. Well put, Kennedy. Believe it or not, you're preaching to the choir here. I stand by my assertion that fundamental knowledge of what a virus is ought to be fairly ubiquitous by now. but never the less, you're absolutely right: There are all sorts of things that others take for granted that I'm pretty oblivious to inspite of some exposure to them. None of us can absorb all the interesting tidbits we're exposed to. It's nice to have friends to compliment your weaknesses or oversights. I've got to admit that such friends have helped me countless times. I don't know what I'd do with out them. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. "Beer" is a skydiver thing, you're a base jumper now, congratulations! 733. I like that. "BEER" is a skydiver thing nicely put. Quote F that! Anytime you can get beer, you should. Not to mention that "beer is a skydiver thing" smacks of elitism. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  7. Flawed analogy. XXL said that his intelligence was questioned by someone that doesn't even know what a computer virus is. Just as there's a vast difference between knowing that a house has plumbing and knowing how to install or repair plumbing, there's a huge difference between knowing what a virus is and being able to write one. Someone that uses computers, even recreationally, really ought to know what a computer virus is. The level of ignorance it would take to not have at least a basic understanding of the concept of a computer virus ought to call their general intelligence into question. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  8. Another risk is shorts. If you manage to push two 13kv lines near each other due to canopy impact, there will be an arc and a small explosion Quote I saw someone on a 26' LoPo slip in between the center two of four power lines and cause an arc. Really scary sound and lights! The canopy lit up like a giant light bulb, collapsed, and dropped the hapless idiot into a ditch unscathed. Given their track record, they were told to take up golf. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  9. ASC has a long and sordid history of unethical, but not necessarily illegal business practices. Skyride is one of their ventures. I don't know how to legally hurt them, but I'm open to suggestions! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  10. You betcha: Killing kids isn't funny. However, joking about it can be! Historically, jokes have been intimately tied to unsavory and awkward things. Nothing new here. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  11. Knowing what a computer virus is doesn't make you intelligent, it makes you informed about modern technology and one of the problems with it. Quote OK, that might be true, but conversely, *not* knowing what a computer virus is, is a highly reliable indicator of stupidity. One would have to have there head pretty far up their bum to miss all of the computer virus related posts, newspaper, television, magazine and radio stories. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  12. A lot of people say a shotgun is best for home defense, and it has all the same problems which you list above. How long a gun happens to be, is not necessarily a factor making it unsuitable for home defense. Quote Context John, context. The discussion wasn't limited to home defense exclusively. If you factor in concealed carry, or something that can easily and safely be stored near you bed without sacrificing quick access, handguns become the clear winner. FWIW, I don't have a particularly strong opinion on gun laws. I'm probably one of the few that could possibly be swayed one way or the other by reasoned arguments. Near as I can tell, most people already have their minds made up. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  13. So, making jokes about killing schoolchildren is perfectly acceptable. But someone who doesn't see any humor in jokes about killing schoolchildren, is dangerous? Gosh, what a screwed-up sense of judgement your statements display. You just had to go and remove any doubt about the lack of sense of humor, didn't you? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  14. I acknowledged that I'm not current on guns/ammo. It appeared that the round you were recomending wasn't normally available to civilians at all. That would make it a poor choice for a civilian! Further, the tests compared TAP ammo to standard slugs and hollow points. As I pointed out in my previous post, you can get custom ammo such as Glaser to suit the application in a wide variety of calibers. Assuming that there are other rounds comparable to Hornady's .223 TAP that civilians can easily and legally obtain, that point is moot. Fair enough. Never the less, my other point was that an AR 15 or similar weapon isn't ideal for most civilians because it's too big. Kind of awkward to conceal, put in your night stand and what not. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  15. Keep the Triathlon, it'll fly more like a base canopy. However, since it's at a higher wingloading, it will still be *very* different. What's your exit weight? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  16. Quote"I have been jumping a kill line for like 2000+ jumps and still check the window and do inflation tests before packing it up, etc. etc. " If it wasn't for this feature I wouldn't use a kill line at all... Quote It's funny. As someone else said, it's largely about personal preference and comfort. I've never trusted the window. I just incorporated cocking my pc into my packing procedure: once when I first lay my rig down, once after I stow my lines, and a visual check as I fold the pilot chute. Only takes a few seconds. BTW, I agree with the others that said to get a fixed pilot chute if you want to. If my BASE canopy can fly well with a 46" pc, yours can certainly handle a 28" or so pc with no problem. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  17. "The people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. Tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger." - Hermann Goering It's spelled "Göring".... Quote How in the heck do you make that funny 'o'? Near as I can tell both spellings are acceptable, especially if your keyboard is missing all the funny pseudo vowels. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  18. Sir, you could not be more wrong. An AR-15 with .223 Hornady TAP ammunition is the preferred combination by most military and law enforcement CQB instructors and ballisitians. The .223 TAP ammunition will not kill the baby/person/team member on the other side of the wall, where as a 9 mm (full metal jacket or hollow point) or a shotgun (slug or buckshot) will because of overpenetration. Extensive tests have been done on this stuff. Please stick to posting what ya actually know. Quote I'm not too current on gun trivia, but it seems to me that your comparison of .223 TAP Vs 9mm or shotgun is as inaccurate as the post you're condemming: According to the first website I looked at, Hornady TAP ammo is normally sold only to police. It's now been discontinued in the caliber you mentioned, and limited quantities are *temporarily* available to civilians. IIRC, there are loads available for various calibers that would be suitable for home and self defense. Glaser and Magsafe come to mind. I'd be stunned if a significant percentage of firearms experts were to recomend the AR 15 over a handgun in the scenario quade was discussing. Serving a search warrant is quite different than hearing someone jiggle your bedroom door at 3:00 AM. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  19. In my opinion, you are "over the line" with that comment. Just because someone wants a pistol magazine that holds more than 10 rounds, does not mean that they are out to shoot schoolchildren. Making such vile comments only hurts your own reputation. Great...he's humor impaired *and* loves guns. Slowly backing out of the forum with hands raised... -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  20. No, I've never used a metal lathe. Someone caught me using a wood lathe once. Boy was that embarassing! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  21. Yerba Mate, mmm. Nothing beats a beverage that tastes like you've steeped an old broom in boiling water! What do you do to make it taste better? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  22. I don't know. Heineken's pretty far down the list around here, but we're blessed with an extraordinary selection of quality beers in Seattle. We can't drink coffee all day, you know. The mini mart up the street from my house carries several hundred beers from all over the world. I'd be surprised if anyone out there has the choices at their fingertips that I do. I'd gladly trade my wide variety of beers for a few more days of sun, though! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  23. Actually, it does. A true Atheist has faith that there is no deity (or deities). Which is why I'm Agnostic. I can neither rule it in nor out because I have proof of neither. Quote My guess would be very few. I think it's far more likely that many agnostics are in fact atheists that have misconceptions about what atheism means. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  24. No need to evaluate them yourself, that could be dangerous. Simply send me all the info you have on them, ie: maps, directions, photos, etc. I'll evaluate them for you, make a test jump if apropriate, and let you know how it goes! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
  25. Hmmm...I don't have any idea what's typical, but I was working in the local ER, when a burglarly suspect was brought in with multiple gunshot wounds. The suspect/victim was extremely combative and out of control initially. Eventually the blood loss mellowed him out. Since he'd been shot something like four times in the torso, it was kind of extraordinary that he had so much fight in him. I asked one of the cops what he'd been shot with. I distinctly remember a Police officer showing me the 9mm hollow points in his spare magazine and saying "These." I'm not a big gun nut, but it seems to me that you'd want police to use hollow points. I mean, either deadly force is appropriate, or not. Hollow points have better stopping power, and are less likely to ricochet or pass through a wall and hit an innocent victim. I can't imagine why a police force wouldn't not only authorize, but endorse hollow point rounds. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.
