Seattle to Eloy, 1600 miles. I planned on leaving around noon, but a few things went wrong, including a flat tire on the way to the dz to pick up my gear. I ended up hitting the road right smack in the middle of rush hour. It took me 2 hours to get the first sixty miles or so. Not a good start, but I still made it door to door in 25 hours, with a nap outside of LA just before sunrise. Did it again a couple years later with my girlfriend sharing the driving...and it took 30 hours. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. I just looked at my 2001 Infinity, and my 1995 Javelin. I don't see it being a problem on either one under load. You pulled the cutaway on an otherwise closed container, right? I'd still like to see photos to make sure we're all on the same page, though. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. .06 is actually quite low. I'd hazard a guess that he's more responsible than most for his age. It's far from scientific, but my personal observation is that people tend to be more cautious and responsible as they get older. A twenty year old driving at .06 doesn't particularly alarm me in and of itself. I don't want anyone to assume that I endorse drinking and driving. Far from it, but I spent a couple of years working in the busiest ER in a four state area. In that time, I saw a lot of alcohol related accidents. I wasn't in a position to collect accurate statistics, but it was always my impression that the drunk drivers tended to be *WAY* over the legal limit. A little cursory research seems to confirm this. Did you know that government statistics on alcohol related accidents are labeled as such regardless of who's at fault and whether or not they are under the influence? In other words, a sober driver can hit a drunk pedestrian, and the stats can be used to suggest that drunk driving is to blame. I'm not suggesting that DUI isn't serious, it most certainly is, but a clear distinction should be made between low BAC and high BAC. The risks are severely overstated right now, and based on emotion rather than reason. This doesn't help anyone. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.

It depends upon several factors, primarily sex and body weight. A lanky young man could easily get to .06 with two beers, or possibly even one strong microbrew consumed quickly. The charts seem to assume a beer that is somewhere between 4-5%. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. It chaps my hide whenever I'm reminded that my hard earned tax dollars are being pissed away on such a pointless and unwinnable endeavor. The wavelength of light that is easiest for the human eye to see is yellow. As someone else mentioned, a lot of military canopies are orange, white, brown and/or green. Orange for rescue, the other colors to blend in with different types of terrain. IMO, no single color is a good idea for a main. Ideally, it should be different from your reserve, and at least two contrasting colors top and bottom. Above all else, the human eye detects movement, so in general, an all green or brown top skin, or a grey, blue or white bottom skin are going to be hard to see. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. I'm not going to get up on a soap box. I just thought I'd try to stimulate some discussion about spotting. The questions may or may not be loaded...I have my opinions on most of them, but I'd like others to throw in their .02 1) Who is responsible for where they exit an airplane? 1 a)Is there any conflict between theory and practice? 2) Regardless of how it happened, you find yourself under canopy on a bad spot. What's your game plan? -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. He attributes it to Douglas Adams.

Aha! This is exactly the kind of discussion that can be usefull, regardless of whether or not it turns out to have been a factor in a given incident. It readily admit that it would be extremely unlikely for a bad spot to be more than one link in the chain of events resulting in an incident. Spotting wasn't the subject of my post, so I didn't elaborate, but when I refer to a bad spot being a cause of an accident, I mean it only in so far as a jumper found themselves landing in unfamiliar terrain. How they ended up in that position, and what decisions they made after that is all worthy of discussion. You'd have to be an idiot to trust a pilot anyways! -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. I agree 100%. Make a clear distinction between speculation and fact, and qualify your statements as necessary. Take a purely hypothetical low turn fatality: It could be the result of a lot of different problems, from a bad spot, panic turn in shifting winds, a broken break line, a tension knot, and so on. Discussing all of these possibilities makes people think. It raises awareness and most likely allows people to learn vicariously lessons that have a high tuition when learned first hand. Once investigated, it might turn out that just before the jump, the deceased confided in a friend that he was going to do his first 180 hook turn landing. However, that friend left the DZ before the incident and wasn't able to weigh in with their info for a week. IMHO, the good that can come from discussing possible causes outweighs the possible harm that can come from speculating. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. In reality, Bush's statements on gay marriage were focused on the ignorant and arrogant liberal judges in some states who have acted in direct opposition to the will of the people. Quote I didn't realize it was the role of the Judiciary to conform to the will of the people. I always thought that they were supposed to determine what is and what is not acceptable application of law under our constitution. It falls to the legislative branch to write laws that reflect the will of the people, assuming, of course, that such laws aren't in conflict with the constitution. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. "Entertainment"? I'm not amused, nor entertained. When I was at the UW, I spent a lot of time doing literature searchs and summaries on any research related to lieing that I could find. There's a reason that lie detectors aren't generally admissable in court: They aren't all that accurate, and interpreting the results is somewhat subjective. I've long been disturbed by the amount of credibility and influence lie detector tests have in the court of public opinion. There are several clues in this article that suggest that this device is also bogus, but I'm not sure if that should make us more or less concerned. Below is one example: I'd be interested to know what their operative definition of "love" is. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. I saw some terms for static line, but none for tandems and tandem masters, so here ya go: Cattle, and cattle hauler. Meat, and meat hauler. I still remember the mooing sounds my friends were making when I first got my rating. Then there is: Human lawn dart. Meat waffle (if things go badly). -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. If your home DZ banned swooping...
3ringheathen replied to gus's topic in Swooping and Canopy Control
Hook turns are banned at my home dz. High performance landings are not. Basically, if you're in control and not scaring the up jumpers you can do what you want. However, if you're stabbing your toggles, getting into the corner, inconsiderate of other traffic, etcetera, you'll hear about it. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. Don't be silly. I wasn't making an argument from authority as you suggest. I simply posted the first link I found that described the flawed methodology that was used in the prayer studies. The fact is that accepted scientific methods were not followed in the study. Therefore the results aren't meaningfull, not because Tessman says so, but because it's junk science. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. I hate to be a killjoy, but those studies are flawed: http://www.findarticles.com/cf_0/m2843/2_24/60302608/p1/article.jhtml You can get far more profound health benefits and healing by letting patients cuddle with cats and dogs than you can with intercessory prayer. Those studies are repeatable and hold up to scrutiny, too. Vibes, prayers, positive thoughts, whatever. If I'm needing them, I don't actually expect any of them to change what's going on. If prayers work, where's that world peace we've been begging for for thousands of years? Regardless, it's always nice to know that someone cares enough to at least wish you well. Having said that, if you really care, send the affected person a personal e-mail. Loads of "me toos" are kind of anoying at best, and at worst come accross as insincere when posted to the world as opposed to the more personal approach. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. This might be true for the absolute best of the best, such as Airspeed, but I don't think it's true for everyone. With rigs in particular, most are pretty damn good, so given the opportunity, most skydivers would happily endorse whichever manufacturer happened to offer to scratch their back. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote. Dropped frames.do you have answers?
3ringheathen replied to skychic68's topic in Photography and Video
What OS are you using? What kind of processor? How much RAM do you have? With my original editing software, I had to enable DMA (direct memory access) to keep up with the high data rate. I don't have the answer to your problem, but I bet the above questions will help someone help you. -Josh If you have time to panic, you have time to do something more productive. -Me* *Ron has accused me of plagiarizing this quote.
