Tell me you are NOT saying an audible will prevent this situation. Tell me you are NOT telling him to depend on an audible...please. An audible would likely have prevented the situation because it would have reminded him that he was not paying attention. That does not mean that a person has to be dependent on the audible to remind them when they need to pull. It seems that some will equate the desire to have an audible with dependence on it. Of course that is a risk, and awareness of that risk and how to avoid it is important. That does not change the fact that having a highly reliable audible would likely have kept the OP from being so negligent. So much of the reserve fabric was visible, perhaps one of the locking stows had hung up, with the canopy mostly out? It was a skyhook rig, but didn't seem to have the main hooked on the bridle. That video is worth a very close look to figure out what happened. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Is the "not fitting" problem that the strap doesn't reach over far enough to allow the velcro to mate? Reducing the length of that strap might not work well when wearing a jumpsuit with velcro cuffs that can be quite bulky. Please describe in more detail. Now you probably wonder why you were focused on getting back to the DZ, eh? If you'd just hung out and watched for your bag it wouldn't be lost, unless of course obstacles were making that prospect nasty. You've obviously got way more time in sport than me, but I'm much more inclined to advise and reward newer jumpers for focusing on safely navigating traffic and landing rather than focusing on where their stuff is. I could see chasing a freebag (and/or main) becoming a distraction over paying attention to other canopies and finding somewhere good to land. Especially if it's the first time under the reserve - better to spend the time doing a few practice flares and turns (if altitude/location permits, of course). JMHO. Gear's nice to have, but I sometimes think we put too much emphasis on following your trash down. You are right, and it is supposed to be on others (that haven't had to deal with a mal) to do the favor of following stuff down while the one with the extra adrenaline and less altitude deal with their reserve landing. That's a really long spot! I've never seen it anywhere near that far, winds must have been smokin'. Landing on the golf course could be fun, I'd never even noticed it before. You might also consider how long it takes to look at the altimeter, realize what it means, and decide what to do as a result of that altitude. I think it likely that you would spend a lot more altitude doing that compared to your last and successful attempt to pull. Of course that doesn't mean that another pull attempt is a good idea. If you think you need to check your altitude before another attempt, then you probably are already low and you know it - it is better to go right to your reserve People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. The language spoken in England by the English is called "English" for a good reason. Maybe the problem is your education, not the BBC journalists' education. Maybe the problem is the elitist attitude of professors. Are you saying that Idear is an officially approved alternative spelling for idea? I do not find it in Webster's Unabridged Dictionary. There are lots of examples of it being used in literature, but that does not establish it as correct any more than what you'd find reading something from Mark Twain. It depends on how aware you were of your altitude. Sounds like you did great, as you had it in your mind that you were likely going to need to use the reserve, and were under a good canopy above 2k. That is a little low for your jump numbers, but not terrible given what you had to do. What have you done to make sure it doesn't happen again? There are OK techniques for folding and stowing your PC, and there are better techniques. I like Germain's method, although not so relevant to your issue, as it is more focused on the PC being able to extract when pulled by the bridle. Was it a mess stuffed in there? Having a set way of putting it in neatly is of course wise. Is there something that contributed to your handle being slippery? I just can't resist... you card? Why is it so common for people to say you instead of your? Ebonics is painful to hear, but so is the use of then when than is correct. It is also painful/hilarious to hear the word "idear" instead of idea. I have heard it many times from supposedly well educated Brit journalists on the BBC. quite right, and tests in school were quite different. Oral and written exams were the standard, not multiple choice. Much greater emphasis on language I would think. Hmm, it is at least worth a close inspection. I also once found a reserve with that "free end through the ring" error, done by a well respected local rigger the first time he encountered such soft links. It would be interesting to know how much that error affects the "strength", whether the tab vs ring design is different, and if it changes depending on where the tab/ring is located. It might be surprisingly strong, which would be nice for the designs to be fairly tolerant of that error. The old style of preloading a traditional automatic transmission for a launch is incredibly destructive. You absolutely do NOT want to drive that way in normal day-to-day situations. I know it isn't a good idea, but 15 years ago when I took some advanced driving training while working at Honda, they had us all driving Accords and doing exactly that - preloading the tranny at full throttle over and over again. They use those same cars every day and subject them to that abuse. It was my undestanding that top fuel/rail type dragsters used an auto tranny. Of course they are very special units, obviously, but the point is that even they use them because they get better performance than they can manage with a manual. I wonder what the increased cost of a DSG is, that would be ideal. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. Hi Phil, "Yer comment kinda reminds me of the old daze when Drag Racing was still a "Grass Roots" sport and any one could be a weekend Hot Shot with a $25 junkyard special ...till ya' blew the head gasket at 100mph!! All ya' needed was a stick trans with a good first and second gear, hardly ever got to third in the quarter mile!! Oh yeah, an did ya' have a "Cue Ball" on the end of your shifter?? or a piston?? 'Remember those Ed "Big Daddy" Roth cartoons and carz?? Auto trans were fer yer geeks, nerds and "Jomoma" back then. Didja' have dual glasspak cherry bombs with lakes?? Cruzin' the drive-in on Fri. night "DERDERDERVOOMVOOM" Hey Milner!! I believe the fastest drag racers use automatic transmissions. It was that way a while back anyway, maybe it has changed. The choice of what the final drive ratio will be from an engineer's point of view is different for a stick vs auto. For the stick, if you make the hwy gearing really tall (low engine speed), then every time you need to accelerate a little bit, or even keep the same speed to go up a hill (more torque is needed) you've made it much more likely that a downshift is needed. Customers don't like to have to do that for trivial hwy acceleration/more torque needed circumstances. With an auto tranny, the torque conv lockup can disconnect and also downshift if needed to adjust to the need for more torque. Modern auto trannys can do this very smoothly, so a higher final drive ratio makes sense for the engineer to specify. The EPA mileage numbers for the Honda Accord are the same across the board man vs auto - city/combined/hwy Modern auto trannys are much more efficient (not such a slush box) as they were in decades past. I can say that for a Honda that will not be true. The overall gear ratio is a little bit higher for an automatic compared to a manual. Attached are the EPA numbers for the Civic man vs auto. City numbers are the same, combined is 1 mpg better for the auto, 3 mpg better for the auto on the hwy. Some have a lot of their self worth attached to the rowing of a stick shift. The PITA a stick causes for stop and go driving is not worth the fun it allows at other times. For a 2 wheeler, the story is so different, it is so much easier to do compared to on a car - effortless in comparison. Quite right. Some people keep gear in their closet even though they really don't expect to use it again. They don't plan on selling it, but might part with it for a person they want to help along in the sport. You never know, they might even just let you use it a while for nearly nothing compared to normal rentals at your DZ. I remember what it was like to need a really cheap rig when I started. An experienced friend let me buy his rig for $20 a week. Anyway, armed with the information you've gotten from this thread, perhaps it is still worth buying the rig in question, but now you can get it at the price it is really worth. If you politely let them know what you're willing to pay and why, they might reject your offer at first, but then later realize you're right and agree. If the cost of it is very low, about $300, then it might be worth buying. That $300 figure may be a bit high though, I might be overestimating its value. Is it all more than 20 years old? Some riggers won't repack a reserve more than 20 years old, even if the mfg does not have a life limit. If the main needs new lines, then the fabric is likely so porous that nice landings will be difficult to achieve. If the container is in nearly new shape, then it might be worth buying. If not, then it might only be worth having it given to you. That's the reality, old rigs need to be in unused condition to be worth anything. Others have pointed out the possible need to spend money on mods to allow an AAD and other such things, so that is part of why it is worth so little. It doesn't matter how much the seller wants for it, you must realize what it is really worth.
