Having a soft opening does not prevent doing hop 'n pops. The altitude lost during a typical hop 'n pop opening is not much even with a typically slow opening. The spectre is a decent choice for beginners - nice openings and landings, but is not known for a flat glide compared to the pulse, silhouette, safire, pilot and some others. Getting a container that you know will be a tight fit for your main can be troublesome. It might be a bit worse than tight - it might be a real struggle - not at all pleasant, even for experienced packers. It might encourage some bad fixes to the problem, such as an overly long closing loop that can cause problems, or it might encourage downsizing before you should do it, or it might cause expensive and dangerous damage to your container. Your container is also more likely to look awful, and you don't want to spend all that money and have it look wrong every time you see it. Comfort is also somewhat dependent on not being packed like a brick. You really should have your first container made to fit your particular 190, whether it be a ZPX Pilot or Pulse - just tell them what exact canopy you will use and let them decide what is the best size. Your description sounds more like what is called a surge, not a stall. Letting up too quickly on the brakes causes a canopy to surge forward very quickly and it will feel like it suddenly drops very quickly. It is different than a stall, but either can kill you without sufficient altitude remaining. If you let up on the brakes a bit more slowly, the surge is not as severe, and some jumpers including tandem instructors will use that controlled surge to induce extra airspeed to get a more powerful flare. Even on a 200 at .93 WL, you should be able to sink it in at deep brakes with an acceptable rate of descent (PLF required). The knowledge that it is possible along with the skill to do it might be needed to avoid obstacles in an off landing.
