AAD requirement @ Skydive San Marcos
sundevil777 replied to bluskidave's topic in General Skydiving Discussions
A DZ is more likely to verify that you have an AAD by checking your rig's data card than a visual check. At least that is enough to not make a fake unit such an attractive option. Being your own rigger would certainly be a benefit though. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. If you're flying a moderately loaded canopy, then it should be not problem to fly it in partial to deep brakes so that the PC drag is reduced. The need to do such an accuracy type approach may be required on any off landing. Thanks for the detail on the sizes. I thought what I had was a 175, until I sold it and my rigger that removed it said it was a 200. It landed me very nicely at a WL of 1.4 The label had no reference to size other than the part/serial number, correct? A porter can fly quite slowly compared to an otter or some of the other larger planes, so it is good that they do use such a long interval. In high winds, you only need to get the canopy to the "plane-out" phase of what you would do on a no/light wind day instead of also having to "shut it down", so I'd say the manner of flaring can change depending on wind. I was wondering the same thing, tested to those conditions as opposed to the FAA buying off on it. They can likely sell all of them they can make in Russia and other neighbor countries without needing to go after the US market. Saying it is tested to the TSO is a way of giving some confidence to buyers. There is probably some US govt listing of equipment that has been approved per the TSO. Why focus on unconventional sources? Lots of regular oil that is not included in the proven reserves because it hs only recently been reevaluated. What Obama policies are to get credit for the increase in production? He has done the opposite. Production went up in spite of him, not due to his policies. I'll take your answer about Spain's alternative energy results as being a reluctant admission that it hasn't worked well at all. Your assertions imply that the price of oil is just barely enough to justify going at new discoveries. I think that there is likely significant profit to be made even with slightly lower prices, and this is supported by the fact that oil companies were keen to do it in the not so distant past when prices were lower. Obama does not deserve credit for increased oil production. The fact that it is higher is further proof that the oil industry sees new discoveries as quite economically viable, despite your assertions of gloom for the future of domestic production. How has Spain's huge "investment" in alternative energy gone for them? Boycott OPEC! You are not disputing that there is a LOT more oil to be had domestically than the "proven reserves" number which Obama cites so often, correct? That is the basis for the complaint against Obama's assertion that drilling for more oil will not help. He is intentionally not telling the whole truth. I think it is worth pursuing a boycott of OPEC oil, for both domestic and foreign policy reasons. Domestic production can and should contribute greatly to that. Speculators are often labeled the bad guys for driving up the price of oil, but they would also be the ones driving it down if the anti domestic oil policies of Obama were reversed. The Bakken and other areas have recently been found to have much much more oil than previously thought. So much so that private companies are keen on getting at it. That shows the economic viability. Longmont City Council will take up skydiving noise

What I don't understand is why it bothers them so much. I used to live 1.5 Miles right off the end of a major international airport. You just get used to it.... I think the difference is that they see the small airport as vulnerable to complaint. They think a small airport is not important, since they will not fly out of it to go on vacation. That is a really crappy analogy. Are you trying to compete with BV? It seems that private companies are willing to bet they can make a profit and are willing to spend money now to start the process of getting at it. That is what matters. Who is suggesting that? Are you making up your own assertions to argue against? I do not disagree, but you contradict yourself. You claim that OPEC would keep prices despite increasing domestic production by reducing their production. I think that is a good thing. I think we should boycott OPEC over the next many years. That doesn't mean it would all come from US oil production, but at least it would not be from OPEC. However, you apparently do not think OPEC would reduce production as a response to lower consumption. Why should the president release oil from the strategic reserve if OPEC will respond as you suggest - reducing their production? The president using gov't policy to restrict domestic oil development increases the ability of OPEC to set prices. Speculators respond to those policy decisions with increased futures prices. If those policies were shifted dramatically, speculators would do the opposite. As I said earlier, I think a non-OPEC coalition should be developed. I would rather pay a higher price for oil in order to boycott oil from OPEC. Perhaps there is a small number of countries within OPEC not worth boycotting, but I think it applies generally. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I’m certainly not, and I’m sick and tired of being told that I am

Same take that Obama has on it. He says drilling will not affect the price, but lower consumption will. Recent discoveries of oil are not included in what are called proven reserves. Obama and others want to ignore this. The Bakken may hold more oil than all the other oil fields in the country combined. The estimates and analysis are recent and debatable of course, but show that the prospects for finding really large quantities is very real, but not included in the definition of proven reserves. Obama and other domestic oil supply deniers want to ignore the very real prospects for more oil to be discovered because it does not fit their image of an alternative energy future as quickly as they would want. The production/mfg costs are probably not what causes such a high price. The costs associated with initial development and testing of the design have to be spread out over the units sold. The costs associated with making tooling for any parts (castings, electronic boards, etc.) have to be spread out over the units sold. It doesn't work that way. The temperature of an object placed in the sun, especially a thin, lightweight object such as nylon fabric will very quickly rise to a steady state temperature. That steady state temperature happens when the amount of heat energy being absorbed by an object equals the amount of energy being dissipated by the object. It does not "build up" heat unless the temperature is also going up. That will only happen if you have it inside a closed car, where the windows will allow the greenhouse effect to increase temperatures much higher than ambient. Place the CD out in the open and it will quickly rise to a constant temperature. An object such as a large container of water would take a long time to rise get to a steady state temperature, but not nylon fabric. I was commenting on the effect of sun on the webbing (earlier post about webbing becoming so much weaker). The number of min/jump that a canopy is exposed to the sun can be figured different ways-many different considerations could make for adjustments to the calculation, but 7 days isn't so many jumps of equivalent exposure. Probably a few to several hundred. It is lousy to have that age put on a canopy without the benefit of having jumped it, but not so much to worry about. Your memory must be wrong. 1 hour of sunlight exposure is likely from just one day of jumping. That sounds like a lot, a whole 7 days...too much, until you actually take the time (pun intended) to look at that total a bit closer. A half hour total per jump of waiting out in the sun for the plane, dirt diving in the sun, the jump itself, and walking back to the hanger is reasonable. Do that several times a day and you very quickly get to 7 days of exposure. Even at 15 minutes per jump you get to 7 days exposure very quickly. The 7 days in the sun is equivalent to a certain number of jumps, approx 300 if you use 15 min/jump. Fortunately for you, the UV intensity drops off early/late in the day. Anyway, you can assume different numbers for the min/jump and such. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired. I don't know the difference, but would think they are comparable if that is the obvious choice (highest drag fabric choice from each mfg) for a high drag suit. You obviously want a high drag suit without having so much fabric that it looks like you're going early 80s retro. Tony offers a double layer of fabric for the arms, but it is not on their list of options. It is a good way of adding drag without so much loose fabric. Cordura booties and cordura/padded knees will also add drag. I never used the continuous swoop cords on my old Tony suit - not worth getting. Even the extra large 2 in. grippers all around (definitely get leg inseam grips) can add a bit of drag compared to the wimpy size grips that were standard in decades past. I don't know about vented booties. People are sick and tired of being told that ordinary and decent people are fed up in this country with being sick and tired.
