  4. Hehehe! Sunny - maybe this will help: 4:00 PST is: 6:00 PM in Aguascalientes 5:00 PM in Tegucigalpa 7:00 AM in Krasnoyarsk
  5. Heya all, There will be an estimated downtime of about 1 hour today (Friday, June 11, 2004) from 4:00 PM (PST). We're replacing the forum search engine by installing a completely separate search server. This is one of a number of steps we're taking to improve the site performance and eliminate those obnoxious Proxy Errors. That and... the new search engine rocks! For more info on the new search engine check this post. I appreciate your patience and apologize for any inconvenience. Safe swoops Sangiro

  7. Not a bad suggestion at all. I'll look into that. I think the code for the checkmarks needs to be optimaized a little though... regardless of where I use them in the future. Safe swoops Sangiro
  8. Heya all, We receive a constant stream of requests from users to remove messages they've posted, some as old as 2 years! I'd like to quickly point out the following part from the Dropzone.com Forum Rules and Policies again: We will NOT remove any posts on request unless it is absolutely necessary and under exceptional circumstances. We will not remove posts that a person made in the past and are now concerned a significant other may see. We will not remove post that you made while drunk. We will not remove posts that you're afraid your new or old boss may see. We will not remove posts that you made while "not thinking". We will not remove posts that you made in anger and now regret. This is not intended to be a complete list.... Please do not harass the moderators about this. Help us spend our time on the things that will make this a cool place for everyone to hang out by thinking before you hit the "Post Message" button. Be wise when you broadcast to the internet. It's your name. Have fun!
  9. Seem to be caused by two open quote tags with no close quote tag. I changed the second tag to a close tag and that fixes it.... Safe swoops Sangiro
  10. The jumper was filming a tandem at the DZ he was employed at. An eyewitness reports that the jumper was descending normally on his main parachute when he went into an abrupt turn about 400 feet from the ground, causing the lines to become twisted and mak
  11. Bill is a minefield of experience and knowledge collected from years of not only participating in this sport but really thinking about every aspect of it. I had the good fortune of spending last Saturday with Bill at his place in Florida. We had a BBQ, took his boat and the SS Decadence for a cruise, and enjoyed the warm water of the lake on his doorstep. All and all not too shabby! Thanks for a fun time Bill. You can tell the stories yourself.
  12. Yup - I'm aware of it. AD described the general problem above. It a priority to fix. We're working on moving the entire search functionality of the Dropzone.com forums onto it's own search server. MySQL is not that great at doing full text searches. We're setting up a separate and new server called Lucene. This will take over the entire searching functionality of the forums. Searches eats up a lot of server resources on this site. We've done more than 700 searches in the last 24 hours! I never knew people were doing that many. We're quite a way down the path of developing and implementing this. In fact, I've been able to test it since last night. Just to give you an idea of the difference here's a result from the new server: Search results: --------------------- Your search for skydive returned 30633 results in 0.371 seconds! --------------------- And that's on a small testing machine! Just tried that same search on the current forums and it took more than 25 seconds to return the results. Once this is set up were hoping to release a lot of database connections which should solve the Proxy Error issues we've been having. If they persist, well.... then I guess we'll look at some alternative optimizations and maybe some additional hardware. I'm optimistic though. I think the new search is going to rock!
  13. Kris, I just went thought this exercise last weekend. As always there's a bunch of trade-offs. Size, power, cost, screen size etc. I ended up buying this HP for a combination of three reasons. It was the only laptop I could find that was awarded an 8 or above by CNet, for which 94% of the people who bought it gave a thumbs up (that's pretty rare - check some others), and finally it was in stock! Not the smallest laptop, not the biggest either. I liked the fact that it has the Centrino chip. The specific model I bought is the ZT3280us. I needed a new "primary computer". I have 2 other laptops so it didn't have to be the most portable. Still pretty thin and slick for a desktop replacement. Very happy with it so far. Safe swoops Sangiro
  14. I think you missed the "bad taste" department three isles back. Think before you post, and think whether you really need to create a new post for everything you come across on the web that gets your attention. Safe swoops Sangiro
  15. The information in the profile is loaded regardless. Not showing it will make no noticeable impact on performance. Safe swoops Sangiro
  16. So that was you I spoke to yesterday.... Safe swoops Sangiro
  17. Disagree. Audiences scale, communities don't. If you want to retain community you need to find a way to keep your groups small. It may be more work but we're not doing this because we have "free time on our hands". We're doing it because we're thinking about the community beyond just the one extra forum you may have to visit. 18. Whoa! No there's not. There are several spyware applications that will write information to fields when you edit a form. This simply means that if you have one of those programs resident on your PC it will add a site to fields that it can recognize (like fields with the name "web site") while you may be updating your profile with other information. Clean up your PC. As for the Classifieds POP ups. I have never seen one, and I'm on here a lot. I have several computers but also frequently scan my computers with the latest anti-spyware applications. I'd like to understand how the DB can pop up an ad? Again, spyware key's off URLs all the time. Clean up your PC. Go here to download Ad-aware for free. Update the definition files often and run it at least weekly if you use the internet a lot. If you visit more risky sites (like porn or warez) a lot then run it more frequently! Nobody can 'write' to the database without being logged in and their certainly is nothing in the database that will just randomly pop up an ad. My servers are very closely managed and checked all the time. Dropzone.com runs on the latest stable versions of Linux OS and Apache Web Server. We don't suffer from every second virus that decides to attack Microsoft servers. If you are aware of any security threat that may cause this kind of behavior on my platform feel free to point me in that direction and I will do whatever it takes to specifically look into that possibility. 19. Jim, Wendy is right. Log out of Dropzone.com. (Go to your account page to do this) That should destroy your cookies. Close your browser windows, open it up again and log back in again. You can not access Incidents because that forums requires you to be registered and logged in to be able to read the threads. If two people are sharing the computer by any chance and both of you log into Dropzone.com from time to time then it's a good idea for both of you to always log out after you're done using the site. This will ensure your cookie files don't get mixed up which my cause some weirdness with the registration. Safe swoops Sangiro
  20. You have NO idea! Safe swoops Sangiro
  21. Kathryn, This is the Freeflying forum. I suggest you take this to the Bonifre or Speakers corner. Safe swoops Sangiro
  22. A 39-year-old man was taking part in a competition. The jumper was found without his gear. Video of the jump showed that he deliberately detatched himself from his gear during the skydive.
  23. Please do not use subject lines filled with special characters. Congratulations on being debt free. Safe swoops Sangiro
