If this is the DZ I think it is (Mile Hi), Then I'm pretty sure you're wrong. I have a friend that lives in CO and works at that DZ, who's been complaining about having to shufflle all of his toolboxes around the Super Otter that he shares a Hangar with for the last year or more. Besides--SDAZ says they have 3 super otters--even though you say one of them is in colorado! Point being that those DZ listings tend to fluxuate all the time anyhow, especially during the peak seasons. So I guess you're right about it being inaccurate--they actually have 2 Otters, A King Air, and a Turbo 206! Pretty cool! mh

My Tandem Master put his hand on my $#@! just before Exit

at our dz, anyone who does this will end up grounded or banned. If I catch them doing it, I'll have a chat with them and give a stern warning. It's about the best way to insure that you NEVER get into the video rotation. If you want a job at McDonald's would you show them how great you were by selling your homemade shite-burgers in the parking lot? I'm so sick of people who think that jumping with cameras makes you a camera flyer. Flying video is a JOB. It's way more fun then flipping burgers (I'd imagine, anyhow) but IMHO, if you can't be a professional, then stick to fun jumps. mh

I see the time between the tandem pull and my own as MY time. I happen to enjoy tracking quite a bit, and have found myself able to get some pretty badass forward speed with camera wings. Often I'll flip over to find that I'm perpendicular from jumprun and right over the landing area--I'll turn toward it, track, and hummit. This is as much to avoid canopy traffic as it is to have fun. The tandem cutting away is not a concern to me. I have filmed enough tandem cutaways (~30) to confidently say it doesn't concern me. mh

180s - Risers or Toggles on big canopy and small canopy
motherhucker replied to CanuckInUSA's topic in Archive
I personally feel that the most important thing is that you don't bounce back between the two. Make a decison what you personally prefer by practicing, doing skydives with your BASE canopy and see how each reacts. Once you decide, practice THIS for object avoidance. If you're in this situation, you have SECONDS to get it turned around...no time to waste. As an old friend once said to me--"Know that when it opens, it will be a line twisted, lined-over 180 with broken lines and the tail on fire. If you're ready to deal with this shite when you exit, you have a good chance of surviving that jump. Don't worry about 90 deg. + or what evever, just make an instant correction with your method of choice. mh -
chip or no chip for Sony excellence miniDV tape?
motherhucker replied to billo's topic in Photography and Video
That depends on whether or not you value any of the worthless features the chip tapes give you. In my mind--Chip tapes=$10-15, non chip=$3.49...decision made. mh -
Panasonic AG-DVX100A. big, but COOL. mh

All of the big boys in the free fall cinematography game (Norman Kent, Joe Jennings, Tom Sanders, etc.) have helmet mounted 35mm motion picture cameras. Generally, it's some sort of modified MOS "gun" style camera. --Douva The Aaton A-Minima is the way to go for shooting film in freefall. It's 16mm, but it will get you way better quality than a GSAP any day. mh

If you're gonna quote him, spell his name right: Da Vinci I'd try to stick with a similar font all the way through as well...that would help give a bit of continuity that you're lacking--Try to tell the story of a skydive--be it a tandem or a fun jumper. just a thought. mh

I'd steer you to a Playstation 2. have fun.

Getting into BASE is a bad idea. mh

Swallows are four to nine inches long. The swallow is small enough to fit into an adult's hand. They weigh about the same as four nickels. Most swallows have dark colors and a light brown spot on their rumps. They have long pointed wings that help them fly higher. Their wings are narrow and they have forked tails. Their feet are weak and curly. The ends of their feet meet together at the base of the feet. Cliff swallows have a white forehead.Ê Males have longer tails than females.Ê ÊÊÊ They have good eyesight that they use to catch bugs. They are very graceful in flight and they catch bugs in the air. They tend to soar high. They make great changes in speed and direction while still remaining graceful.Ê ÊÊÊ We recognize two types of swallows. These are the adult and juvenile cliff swallows. The juvenile's tail is notched more than the adults because each of their tail feathers is more pointed. The juveniles have hints of stripes on their backs and light yellow beaks. They also have short beaks and tails. Ropestrikes are completely ludicrous. Do you really think that a bird that can fly at speeds in excess of 70 mph and routinely identifies and catches flying bugs while in flight won't see [and avoid] a 10-12mm static line hanging 600 ft. into the cave? Swallows are far more agile and have far better eyesight than you can imagine. and BTW, comparing a pigeon to a swallow is like comparing a Mack truck to a Tricycle. mh

I'd check with any local jumpers first to see if they have any tower-specific beta for that 'vator. If there are none, PM me. mh

I'm calling TROLL on this one. maybe you should practice from the roof of your house first.

There are only a few people in the world who I will let pack for me (and actually jump it). Personally, I feel that once you leave an object, BASE is a sport for the individual, with personal culpability being of the utmost importance. IMHO, each and every BASE jumper needs to take full responsibility for their own accidents, injuries, or other personal mishaps. BASE is not skydiving, bowling, golf, or tennis. Everyone who jumps should be fully cognizant of the risks and have already evaluated the jump. Once you decide, whatever happens is your fault, good or bad, short of possibly a sniper picking you off in freefall. That being said, having someone else pack for you seems like it could remove some of that culpability from the jumper making a BASE jump. That's bad. Aside from that, you should keep current with all aspects of your sport--it makes you a better jumper. I've heard of people with up to 50 BASE jumps that still did NOT KNOW how to pack! That's bad. Lastly, a large part of BASE is the friends I meet along the way, and if I ever go in, I don't want any of my friends trying to blame themselves for what happened, because it was MY fault. It's my life--I'll take responsibility for it and pack for myself...that reminds me--I need to finish packing! mh

save your TDK tapes because they're useful if you ever run out of toilet paper. They do Chaff a bit, and if you're really hairy down there that may present a problem also. The general equation works like this: Sony camera=Sony tapes--ONLY Panasonic cam=Pana tapes--ONLY No matter which camera you use you should clean your heads regularly with a specific head cleaning tape. Also, the problem you describe could haapen due to excessive moisture in the camera. I recommend keeping your gear in a pelican type case (closed) and get a bunch of Silica packs that should live at the bottom of said case to suck out any excess moisture. Camera condoms are a good way to increase the life of your heads also. mh
