karen's a dork

what you really need to do is find a video guy and buy his slot and then you will know exactly where your problem is. his slot is way cheaper than wasting jumps guessing.

i think rsl or not if you pull a and dont pull b your an idiot and darwin will take care of you.

^ you are correct in saying a lot of written information needs to be out there. my first point was that a wing loading chart along with nothing else doesn't help. that nothing else i was talking about was information, a progressions in the licences, and on going mandatory coaching such as what is needed to get a relative work endorsement. but don't kid yourself, the only real effective way to manage the risks is continuous coaching. people spend big $$ on every other aspect of their sport except the most high risk area. not only that, the most high risk area is where everyone wants to be visible in, swooping. seems kinda dumb to me. i know this, the people that i coach, especially the beginner / intermediate get a lot out of it and now understand the big picture a lot more.

this show just how little you know. you seem to only focus on that coaching will cost $$, and they are just out to rip you off. well it should cost you. the coaches spend big $$ in coaching themselves not to mention the travel involved. a coach is going to start at ground zero in your canopy skills and work with your goals. i spend close to 2 hours on the ground when i start with someone and that is before they ever grab the rig. we talk about how to break up the canopy portion into learning, pattern, and final approcah. we walk the landing area and discuss ground references to use while setting up. we talk about control surfaces and the reasons to learn thing. the list keeps going and going and going. it is only about the flare if you think your canopy is designed to get you to the ground and thats it. if you want to be a canopy pilot, which should be everyones goal then you need to learn to pilot your canopy.

every level of skydiver could use coaching on their canopy and want to know how many will get it? about 5% probably. i never said everyone needs to swoop, in fact i don't think swooping is necessary to learn at all. i am talking about canopy coaching to the level you want. last year i started offering coaching from basic canopy to entry / intermediate swooping. you have no idea the lack of knowledge on simple accuracy even. wing load guidelines are great for someone looking to stay conservative and needing some general information. canopy coaching is needed for every single licensed skydiver. if we all knew what we were doing wrong, or all the secrets no one would ever get hurt.

you people really need to stop looking at the reply to....
-
this is a preposterous statement.
-
i was maybe simplifying things a little. in most cases the canopy will still fly straight, and not spin to the top thus choking off the canopy.
-
as the worlds largest organization for skydivers they should be leading the way in canopy education and the truth is they aren't. we're talking about a chart taken from another organization to be adopted as guidelines? wow - i can really see the reduction of accidents from people looking at a wing loading chart. USPA has finacial resources from it's 34,000 members and has yet to develop any canopy training program that will actually be the best defence to canopy accidents.

i think your learning is being impeded. properly coached skydivers should be able to progress faster than that safely. i think the emphasis should be moved to students and novices getting proper canopy training and pushing continuing jumpers to also have canopy training as part of further licenses. keeping someone on a 190 till 200+ jumps and assuming they will know enough to downsize after that is ridiculous. in fact, i argue that would make someone a worse canopy pilot because they are used to what simple square footage will do to help them out in a bad situation and not the canopy piloting skills they should really be learning. having a wing loading guide without a plan that will guarantee more education is like stating the problem is there without a plan to fix it. sorry brian, i think the USPA is again missing the boat.

who cares if you get line twists on your big square docile canopy. you will certainly be able to kick out. rsl or skyhook i think is suitable for anyone that does not jump a camera.
-
although i support smart canopy choices for jumpers i think this is far to "safe" to ever make itself standard in real life. for instance, do you really think an average weighted jumper (200lbs with gear) is going to be jumping a 190 @ 200 jumps?
-
using helmets not specifically designed for skydiving video is just silly IMO. snagging, stability, cutting it away are just a few issues. as snobby as it sounds i think you should have the correct equipment or you are wasting you time and $$.
-
get the xaos boyz video. it has many of the test jumps for the R-MAX. best part, not many third canopies present :o
-
i would do that in a second if i was towing. however, something you would have to consider yourself and i definitely do not advocate for junior jumpers.

Making new line set by riger vs buing new one at factory
chachi replied to kanada's topic in Gear and Rigging
not trying to steal anyones thunder, but installing a new line set is a joke if you have a bartacker. i also dont think making line sets is hard if you know how to finger trap and you are precise in your work. for you and your conquest though, probably easier to send the canopy and have them install it. they only need changing every so often. with HP canopies, especially ones with HMA you need to change way more often. it may be worth it in a case like that. -
you should buy gear as soon as you can afford too.
-
some people in here are trying to assist you in making a good decision but you should post the information about all of the gear as requested from several people. you are turning your wheels continuing to talk about just a canopy. as for downsizing if you are unsure after thinking about it, and discussing it with your instructor you should find someone around the dz like the owner or safety officer and ask their opinions. no one online really knows you so it is best to go to people that do for canopy advice especially.

agreed or a similiar sized crossfire would be an option. better characteristics for swooping than a stilletto.

Should Canopy Coaching be #1 route to take to not Femur?

the reply to feature of this website sux. you just happen to be the lucky one... -
Should Canopy Coaching be #1 route to take to not Femur?
chachi replied to KillerKimmy's topic in Safety and Training
i appreciate your response and i think we both think education would be the best thing. i totally disagree with this though. students do not need to know about aerodynamics before they understand how all of the control surfaces work, before they understand patterns, before they start to understand what it takes to be a canopy pilot. brian's book is wicked, but in my opinion nothing is should be a substitute for a canopy program (coaching / instruction / whatever you call it) put in place at the beginning by good canopy coaches. nothing. -
Why Don't Skydiving Pilot Chutes Have Vented Apexes?
chachi replied to tso-d_chris's topic in Gear and Rigging
probably because it doesnt really fucking matter. the only reason you don't want the pilot chute to oscillate in BASE is do to it causing slight off headings if it gets bad enough. also that happens mostly in non - terminal openings. the speed in which the pilot chute hits the air at, the size of the pilot chute (much smaller), the fact that in skydiving canopies body position is the most controlable factor, and added wear and tear make it useless for manufacturers to go through extra un-profitable steps to make it with vented apexes. -
Should Canopy Coaching be #1 route to take to not Femur?
chachi replied to KillerKimmy's topic in Safety and Training
so you think someone could effectively learn if i threw a book at them. why don't we just throw a book of RW @ someone instead of making do coaching jumps one on one before we let them do RW? do you think i could get a good article off the net to teach me all of the things i should know before flying a camera? or would a mentor be better? this is perhaps the stupidest comment ever. trying to coach someone on canopy flight over the internet is probably the cause of some of these "femurs" once you actually go get canopy coaching you will start to realize ALL the things you really didn't know. instruction is different from coaching how? now your agreeing with me after having an opposing opinion... -
Should Canopy Coaching be #1 route to take to not Femur?
chachi replied to KillerKimmy's topic in Safety and Training
i didn't read all the post but i did read about half. i think canopy coaching from the start is THE MOST IMPORTANT thing that you can do to not become a statistic. the instruction given to a person that we then give a beginner parachute license to is deplorable. when you attend a canopy course or get personalized instruction for your level you will now have the knowledge that you really need to develop your skill in the areas that will eventually save you from injury or death. here is a question? do you think jumps alone will teach you how to fly a canopy when you really dont have the basics? where would you get this correct information if not for coaching.
