Chavez Kalashnikov Factory Plan Stirs Fear
miked10270 replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Yeah... Zarqawi was certainly having problems with it, and it's certainly not THAT complicated (I've heard rumours that even American soldiers can use them!). THe other story going about at the time was that this was a propaganda video to show "the faithful" that he was alive and well after being wounded, which may explain his "ineptness". He certainly wasn't controlling the weapon well and appeared injured. I still think he looked a lot better in the last video he was in. Mike. Err... That last video of Zarqawi? The one released to show he was well? The one where he was firing a M-249 Squad Automatic Weapon? Just thought I'd mention it. Mike. Chavez Kalashnikov Factory Plan Stirs Fear
miked10270 replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
If he's only making 20-30,000 AKs a year,I'd guess that at least the first 5 years production will go to self-defence, then to weapons replacement. It doesn't sound like an export operation. The AK103 IS a better infantry weapon than the FN-FAL and I can understand his military's desire to replace this ageing infantry weapon. As for the Russian helicopters & jets... Are these to replace the American ones he can't get parts for anymore? I recall that Chavez was vilified for getting rid of his F-16s a while ago. The US position kind of reminds me of Captain Edmund Blackadder in 1917 describing the British Army He'd Joined: "...back in the old days when the prerequisite of a British battle was that the enemy should, under no circumstances, carry guns... Even spears made us think twice. The kind of people we liked to fight most were two feet tall and armed with dried grass." (The battle of Mboto Gorge) "...Ten thousand Watutsi warriors armed to the teeth with kiwi fruit and guava halves. After the battle, instead of taking prisoners, we simply made a huge fruit salad. When I joined up, I never imagined anything as awful as this war (WWI). Fifteen years of military experience perfecting the art of ordering a pink gin and saying 'do you do it doggy-doggy?' in Swahili, then suddenly four and a half million heavily armed Germans hove into view. It was a shock, I can tell you." After all, if the US has to go in and restore Venezuelan democracy by ousting a democratically elected leader, they don't want any of that "Resistance" stuff getting in the way, do they! Mike. I can quite belive it. What is your paeditrician's reccommendation? The point I make is that vaccination does carry a risk. It's small, but it's there. It's also well documented and publicised. What's harder to find is data on children who haven't been vaccinated, have caught the diseases and have been permanently disabled as a result. Parents willing to say: "I didn't vaccinate my kid and now he's dead / in a wheelchair!" are less willing to publicise this. Along with near universal vaccination came a forgetting of just how nasty these diseases could be. They were permanent disablers, debilitators, and killers! Consider how the childhood mortality rate went down with the introduction of vaccines. Here's the UK National Health Service link on immunisation for your info: http://www.immunisation.nhs.uk/ Hope this helps. Mike. PS. If you immunise, there is a single point of miniscule risk. If you don't, then your kids can be susceptible to these illnesses for life! Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Charitable Giving in U.S. Nears New High
miked10270 replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
Without wishing to denigrate Americas efforts in philantrophy, what the article is saying is that Americans are ALMOST giving more than they used to. I seem to remember that the level of American donations, both governmental and private were discussed at the time, with America's per-capita donations in both rerspects being less than those of other countries. More disturbingly... Why choose this particular article or area to proclaim that "America is BEST!" when it doesn't say that in any way? By all means be proud of your philanthrophy, but is the associated arrogance and accusation neccessary? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Hi Shani, My wife Iona and her twin brother were both vaccinated in the late 1960s. Iona was fine while her brother had a severe reaction and is severely mentally disabled requiring 24/7 care (Thank You Socialised Medicine). despite this very personal experience, we've had all 3 of our kids vaccinated. We looked on it as a matter of weighing one risk against another rather than being able to choose an absolutely safe course. The chances of a child being harmed by vaccination is A LOT less than the chances of a child being equally harmed by the diseases the vaccine will prevent. The thing is that Severe Allergic Vaccine Reaction is well publicised while the children who suffer because of not being vaccinated is poorly publicised because they're just ill with no rich drug company to blame. Obviously, I'd counsel FOR vaccination. Regards, Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. The history referred to is a load of BOLLOCKS! I think that we can all agree on that. If the US wanted an excuse to declare war on Germany, then the sinking of the USS Rueben James in October 1941 would have supplied same. In fact, it was Germany who declared war on December 10th 1941. The "Tomkin Gulf" incident had very little to do with the political pressure being exerted on America to form The Military Aid Commission, Vietnam and the reasons for the resulting American involvement. This involvbement was due to the Vietnamese faction leaders blackmailing their respective superpowers with the threat: "Support us or we'll lose!" If the document starts it's basis in falsehood, then it's unlikely to improve. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Hi John, It's an award (like Shropshire says). The Senior Met Cop is getting the award for "Services to Policing", which means he's gone to work and done his job without too many major fuckups. He'll already have The "Queens Police Medal" which is awarded for outstanding police work but it's admitted that it's only awarded for administrative work. You'll not find cops under the rank of Superintendent with it. Generally, the awards system consists of a bunch of senior civil servants and other government folk telling each other how wonderful they are by handing out knighthoods and pretty medals to each other. You also get a buffet meal at Buckingham palace. Sprinkled in among these self-congratulatory civil servants are a few folk who've bought their honours by contributing to the right political party, and even the odd one or two genuinely deserving folk to add a bit of colour and credibility to the proceedings. However, while a senior cop, soldier, or civil servant will get the "Most Noble Grand Knight Commander of the Bollock" - or whatever the highest honour is - for turning up for work and sitting at his desk, a "peasant" generally has to do 30+ years of voluntary work with orphans or similar to get the lowest award. The "Peasants'" awards are ususally given their true worth by giving one to some woman who's served in a chip-shop for 40 years! Mike. No. That was in no way indirect! The thing which strikes me about your post is that you want to run away from "The American Problem" rather than trying to be part of the fix! Because of this, I have a lot of sympathy with the folk I usually disagree with who've told you to go. I'd just like to add You won't be happy in The UK, either. Mike. Without wishing to impugn Fox News' editorial policy, I think I'll wait and see it The BBC picks it up. The nice thing about The Beeb is that it's money's guaranteed without control over it's content - they don't have to satisfy anyone to ensure their income. This is perhaps the best guarantee of impartiality we can get. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Yeah... Six weeks of interacting with random ordinary Iranians, talking to them & living with them. Moving through the country. As opposed to time spent in a military base training soldiers of a dictatorial regime who were selected with at least an eye on their "political reliability". Which experience is more likely to produce an unbiased view? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Youve been there too. Cool. When were you there? I was there twice. First time for 2 weeks in 1995. Second time for 4 weeks in 1998. Both times basically as a tourist. Nice skiing. Friendly folk. Even had a drink with a few Christians, but didnt really rate the drinking there. That response and its avoidance of discussing the issue neatly encapsulates the reason behind the Worlds view of America. QED. Mike. Al Quaeda wants to start a war between USA & Iran
miked10270 replied to SpeedRacer's topic in Speakers Corner
Put simply, to cause "America to lose while seeming to win". Consider what changes to American life 9/11 has caused. They hare succeeding in destroying "The American Way" which was so admired and have replaced "America The Beautiful" with "America The Bully" in the eyes of the world. Thus far America has invaded two countries in "retailation" for two skyscrapers. Proportional? Now, they want America, the champion of democracy, to overthrow a fellow democracy. Where does that leave America? Who was it who said: "Speak softly, but carry a big stick"? Whoever it was didn't say: "When you go in the room, smash the stick over the head of anyone who doesn't welcome you or looks at you funny"! Mike. Of Course there was. The standard oily-sand-kicker strategy: 1. WE invade and make the bad man go away. 2. THEY are so grateful that they give us all their oil. 3. EVERYONE lives happily ever after. This is proof that for every problem there is a solution which is simple, cheap, and wrong. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Or... "They" (the islamic revolutionists), having overthrown a dictator, discovered (or suspected) that a counter-revolution was being planned from the US Embassy! It's not like it hasn't happened before. So... It was fine to support Hussein and his use of WMDs when his invasion of Iraq failed? Fine for the USS Vincennes to shoot down an Iranian airliner for taking off in a suspicious manner?... America really doesn't hold the moral high ground regarding it's behaviour towards Iran. Quite the reverse. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode.

I always had difficulties with the whole "NSFW" thing. For example: In this case, surely anyone who's opened #1 & #3 can see where this is going & may not want to open #5... Or is this at the level of "Don't use a Microwave Oven to dry your pet!". Secondly... Surely it depends on where you work. I doubt that such images are "unsafe" for someone who's a sole trader or working in a telephone-sex call centre or similar? Thirdly... Dizzy-Com is purely entertainment, isn't it? WHY aren't you working at work? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode. -
Do you want capital punishment for knife crime too? I'd like to see PROPORTIONATE punishment, but never Capital Punishment, along with persons serving their entire sentence without remission for "good behaviour" ("BAD behaviour would incur a lengthening of sentence or harsher regime). This may seem reactionary, but I do believe that the most powerful way to rehabilitate offenders is to leave them shit-scared of going back. As you may gather, I admire Joe Arpaio and his methods of discouraging recidivism. The UK could do with a loan of him to reform our prison system. As for gun registration, as long as it's used purely to track who owns what and to prevent unsuitable persons holding guns or buying ammunition, then it's fine, a lot better than the presently over-lax American system. Unfortunately, it never seems to stop there. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. It might be Anger-Bumps! I remember Homer Simpson had them once. Fortunately you've come to the right place to find out... Now, Becky-Boobles... What you have to do is take those sweet pink & fluffy fingers of yours and count the bumps V-E-R-Y- S-L-O-W-L-Y. Use one hand to touch the bumps and the other hand to keep track of how many you have. If you go past five, then take a shoe off. Still just the one? Then they're NOT Anger-Bumps. Now say: "Thank You, Mike"! Mike. Interestingly, Nuremburg has preserved the podium ans part of the stadium constructed for The Nuremburg Rallies (lest we forget - or worse, give the denialists any credence). The rest of it's a truck park and factory units - very appropriate. The difference is that where once the top Nazis ranted at their subjects, now you'll find kids skateboarding & kicking a ball around.
