War supporters-Please do not make the same stupid mistake again.
miked10270 replied to Darius11's topic in Speakers Corner
But what did Y'All think of the speech itself? I found it well considered, with a good historical grasp and a ready understanding of human nature. Then again, Ron Paul has arrived at the same conclusions that I did. Obviously I'd feel that he's done his research, applied it well, and spoken honestly! Mike. Where should we focus our energy concerns
miked10270 replied to niolosoiale's topic in Speakers Corner
I think the focus should be on renewables. Bio-Fuel. Wind-Farm. Wave-Farm. Solar heat & power. Hydro-Electric Power. The present state of our Nuclear technology to me simply means "Same $hit - Different Poison". We still dig iffy stuff out of the earth, refine it from "Iffy" to "Lethal", and use it secure in the knowledge that the 10,000 year problem of the waste will be dealt with by "Not-Us"! Now OK, with the best will in the world, renewable energies aren't going to replace fossil fuel. Nor will Nuclear. But shouldn't we be focussing on getting power that's really free & renewable (sustainable) and not power sources which entail harvesting stuff that isn't going to replace itself? At least a concerted effort towards renewable/sustainable energy will take the pressure off a little. Like the saying goes: "A googleWatt here & a GoogleWatt there will maybe add up to some serious energy". Of course, this comes down to an individual push as well as corporate effort. Mike. Which is where "Free-Health-Care" (I prefer the term "Nationalised Medicine" comes in. You're right that it isn't free. It is, however, more efficient. In effect central government goes into the medical insurance business (!) on a "non-profit" basis. It sets a premium based on ability to pay for a universal level of cover. It pays it's staff a flat rate (salary). Where the efficiency savings come in is firstly that the insurance companies and hospitals are no longer profit-making businesses. Administration can be cut across the board (specifically in billing) - no-one has to chase money since it's the government who collects & pays. The government ain't gonna go bankrupt. It seems free because you pay your "healthcare" along with your taxes (direct & indirect), so while you're paid a little less & stuff costs a little more, you DON'T have to worry about medical bills should the worst happen. Last time I looked, The British NHS provides it's level of service to the whole UK population at LESS THAN HALF the per capita cost of The US System of private health insurance & medical care. I'm not saying it's perfect (is your medical insurance perfect?)... But it is better. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Iran Warns It May Hide Nuclear Program
miked10270 replied to warpedskydiver's topic in Speakers Corner
I don't remember saying no evidence! I do remember saying "understandable" and "little danger". Less danger than the Soviet Union & China. Less danger than North Korea. About on a par with India & Pakistan's nuclear weapons programs (which you may remember actually stabilised THAT region). Incidentally... Has the US recently offered India & Pakistan ASSISTANCE with their nuclear programs? I'll say it (yet) again. Nuclear weapons are by their very nature a DEFENSIVE weapon. You CANNOT win a war with Nukes if both sides have them. The best you can achieve with their possession is a draw with both sides losing. Nukes fulfil Clausewitz's definition of a total and therefore unwinable war. A war you can't win isn't worth fighting. Nukes render a country "unprofitable" to invade (enforce regime change / bring "democracy)! This is why Iran wants Nukes. Why does the US want to deny them? Mike. At least someone thinks rising oil prises are good
miked10270 replied to Amazon's topic in Speakers Corner
Another Landy user? What'cha got? Mine are a 110CSW wiff 300tdi and a S-II/III (RIGHT on the change) wiff a Perkins 4203 & Fairey Overdrive unit (which it REALLY needs). Are you SURE about going heated SVO? It really only comes into it's own if you make long trips. Bear in mind you can't switch until the engine's hot and the SVO has been heated over 80 Centigrade. You also MUST remember to switch back to diesel for at least a minute BEFORE switching off (if you hope to start the engine again)! The guy Nicholson at North Wales Biodiesel Org may well have a solution, but he's only selling his recipe as a business. It retains the alcohol (Glycerine) molecule that's stripped in transestherication but registered producers seem to get a lot of hassle from the local HMC&E! BioDiesel is still more expensive to prooduce than fossil - it's only viable in the UK 'cos of the tax break. You were, of course, going to declare the use & pay duty, weren't you? Oh yeah... One small point... IF you go Heated SVO then DON'T strip your local supermarket of of veggie oil! You're better off getting your local chippie to get in extra catering drums. It's less noticeable! Rise, Robots, Rise! Lots of Robots Help the Troops in Iraq
miked10270 replied to a topic in Speakers Corner
I love the bit where an $8,000 robot is called "cheap"! I take it that's $29.99 for the RC truck. $19.99 for the video cam. $99.99 for the wireless TV link & handheld TV. $3.99 for the glue to stick the bits together. $7,846.04 for the defense contractor that came up wiff the sexy name for it! Thinking about it, I wanna go work for BILLVON gluing webcams & real guns to model tanks! We can call it CYBERSNIPER (which stands for loads of stuff we haven't made up yet) and it's specially designed as a non-lethal weapon by virtue of the fact it's designed to shoot Iraqi Civilians Terrorist Suspects in the ankles (or knees for those sneaky Toddler-Terrorists). I want $200k per annum (payable in Euros please), full Medical Insurance, & immunity from prosecution! I'll even bring my own Araldite. Mike. What!.. Anyone who has suggested THIS automatically gains membership to Bush's Axis-of-Evil?! Such a move would debase the US$ as, were oil to be traded in Euros, then that currency would gain popularity as the preferred reserve currency. Bear in mind that The Coalition took 13 years to invade Iraq after Kuwait, but less than 13 MONTHS after Iraq started to trade it's oil in Euros. Once Saddam was toppled, Iraqi oil went straight back to trading in dollars! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Qaddafi might disagree with you on that. Syria is out of Lebanon, and, the change is happening in Iraq too. Historically, ANY country which has had an outwardly imposed "regime change" has always developed a resistance force. Prime examples would be Czechslovakia, Poland, Denmark, Holland, Belgium, France & Norway in WWII. Whether they're "Terrorists" or "Plucky Resistance Fighters" depends entirely on whether you agree with their aims! Qaddafi didn't change as a result of the 1986 US bombing of Tripoli. He changed as a result of diplomacy. Syria didn't leave Lebanon under threat of force of arms, it was diplomatic pressure after their little black operations were exposed! Like Churchill said: "Jaw Jaw is better than War War." THAT way, each side can tell their people that they've won & made the other side back down. With Libya, we got ONE "terrorist-bomber" to jail for a few years... They got an apology for a bombing raid (the man who ordered it is dead). Everyone's happy & lets byegones be byegones. PS: Wanna swap some cheap oil for a few of our "not quite latest" guns & planes & missiles? Syria suddenly found itself like a kid caught with it's hand in the cookie jar. MORAL pressure made it impossible for them to continue to occupy Lebanon - the more so since being caught turned the Lebanese people against them... AND... We all remember just how effective the Lebanese are civil unrest & resistance. Secular democracy & a regulated free market IS the best performing regime - far better than ANY single party state or command economy. That can be shown by example! Forcing a change on people merely breeds resentment. Mike. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. The REAL strength of a country rests on the degree to which it's worthy of imitation by other countries. Remember that "Communism" wasn't defeated by our having more tanks, guns & bombs than them (they had loads more than us), it was by having more cars, TVs & supermarkets! Force has never changed anyone. Envy has worked loads of times. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Naah... I WAS trying to avoid the temptation of getting a cheap laugh at the unfortunately named KERMIT Roosevelt in favour of pointing out that he recruited a known & convicted NAZI as point-man for the coup. What REALLY sucks is people making disparaging remarks about soldiers, based on nothing more than accusations... Without going into details, I bet that after the IED detonated, the troops training led them to the nearby village with pretty good reason. Anyone else who knows or remembers the 3 elements of a CWD roadside bomb will be unlikely to criticise the Marines' actions quite so vociferously. In the meantime, the media is, as always RULED by circulation / viewing figures, & "Troops Commit Massacre" serves that purpose far better than "Troops Follow Training"! Mike. The Criminal-Justice System, indeed ALL the Legal System has traditionally been open & public so that it can be open to public scrutiny. The problem is the relative newsworthiness of various events & the attendant media coverage. Doubltess the media will devote the front 6 pages to the initial allegations, while the eventual acquittal will merit a paragraph around page 26, right beneath the Haemmaroid Cream Adverts! Mike. Yeah... That'd be because of Kermit Roosevelt installing a "Puppet Government" in Iran in 1953! When Iran WAS a secular democracy & voted in a socialist party (who was going to nationalise oil production), The bold Kermit was CIA Station Chief for the area & in charge of the coup to replace the Iranian government with The Shah. Kermit's FIRST act was to spring MAJOR Nazi collaborator Fazlollah Zahedi from jail for him to lead the military part of the coup. Zahedi went on to command the Iranian military & secret police under the Shah. So really... They're just following the military traditions foisted on them by "Kermit's Puppet Government". Mike. How come WE can have them and THEY can't?
miked10270 replied to akarunway's topic in Speakers Corner
The "FEDEX" bomb theory. The counter to this is that weapons grade material actually carrys the "fingerprint" of the reactor which produces it. This is how it was established who, how & when helped Israel's nuclear program along. It's also a very strong motivation against countries "losing" fissile material. Were a FEDEX bomb to be found or detonated, say in The US, then retaliation is virtually inevitable. Governments KNOW that claiming "A Bad Boy did it & ran away" just wouldn't wash without COMPELLING reason to believe them. Bear in mind that Nukes are intrinsically a defensive weapon. Since 1945, not a single nuclear power has devised a morally defensible way to use them offensively. The only thing that Nukes can do is ensure that "The Other Side Doesn't Win Either"! You CAN'T win a war with Nukes... You CAN ensure that the other side also loses. That's what makes Nukes so attractive to Iran. At present, with Russia & Turkey to their North, Iraq to their West, Saudi & The Gulf States to their South, Pakistan & Afghanistan to their East... ALL "In The US Camp" (if not actually US occupied, then sympathetic)... Iran feels surrounded & beleagured. They NEED the ability to render any invasion worthless. They NEED the ability to make any war "Total" & therefore suicidal. And I'm pretty sure that Iran has already worked out that nuclear doctrine is a Two-Edged-Sword. Rhetoric can be ignored. Acts have consequences. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode. -
"Amen" (sic) to that! God is great... Organised Religion quite frankly sickens me. They purport to educate, but all too often merely want to control. They promise paradise (to which they ALL claim to have exclusive access) in return for your following their bigotry, but I doubt it'll be paradise with such people in it! In the meantime, If Y'All can get your church organist to play "Sweet Bye and Bye", then may I suggest some LYRICS for it? It really works best with a Salvation Army band - they get mentioned by name! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. So you would have no objection to a rule mandating no wing loadings greater than 1.0? I think that there is just such a rule! It's applied to students so they only get to jump nice soft, docile canopies... Despite the giggles that could be had putting first jump students under a Velocity 97! It's only as you prove your ability that restrictions are gradually lifted as you progress & prove your responsibility & competence via your logbook & licenses. That's why you don't see the "10-Jump-Wonder" on a 20-way dive (unless the dive is done specifically to carry him). Folding this into the US Gun laws (or relative lack thereof...) The REAL problem with a registration & licensing system is were such a system to be set up, no matter how reasonable it was in it's original form, Politicians and other "instant-experts" wouldn't be able to resist trying to bugger about with it to follow their own agenda (make noise = get elected = power). Apart from that, something like the UK's Firearms act 1963 or 1968 was great. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. The difference is "positive vetting". right through your skydiving career, from turning up at the DZ on day one, right through to the jump you did yesterday, you have been assessed by instructors & your peers. Had you not proved your competence & responsibility in skydiving then you'd still be jumping student kit, or not invited onto a jump, or even told to "TUG" (Take Up Golf)! You're "vetted" in almost all aspects of your life: Skydiving; Promotion at work; Driving; Credit applications... And you've repeatedly proven that you're NOT the lowest common denominator entirely through these vetting procedures. But until there's some similar vetting on gun ownership to weed out the stupid & irresponsible - some way for you as an individual to prove your sense, intelligence & competence with a firearm, then there'd be no option other than to treat the overwhelming majority of gun owners the same as the idiots! Perhaps an answer would be for The National Parks Service to vet campers and be prepared to issue a very limited number of firearms carry permits for defense only. Mike.
