  1. Apparently the program "learns and adapts" from each game played! So, if enough of Y'All play it at Cypred or AAD, then it'll get good at guessing it. Mike. 3. It's OOR Oil Troot! Did you have to take all your Dynamite back home? or did you try a little Shark-Fishing? Speaking of sharks, another classic example of God not $hitting on his own doorstep. Y'All have Great White Sharks, Tiger Sharks, stuff that'll have your leg off if Y'All go paddling. Sharks in Scotland..? Partial to algae and perhaps the occasional shrimp.
  4. We had that - pre 1945. A MAJOR war every 20 or 30 years because despite various countries best efforts, there just wasn't a sufficiently effective deterrent against war. At least nukes, particularly when both countries in a potential conflict have them IS a sufficient deterrent. Call it MAD or call it Clauswitz's realisation of "Total-War". It works. Nukes give a country security. Security allows a country to moderate its own demands. This may be a singularly insane way to enforce "peace", but it's simply a reflection of the collective sanity of humanity. Mike. 5. Actually, you've got is completely backwards. Britain DOES NOT suffer from earthquakes, hurricanes, typhoons, tornados, massive floods, sandstorms, excessive heat, excessive cold, etc... for the simple reason that God is, in fact, Scottish.
  6. You DID post this as "Major accomplishment for the Iraqi Army" Suggesting that their army (or Iraqis) have somehow improved due to the Coalition invasion & regime change to the point that some are now "Worthy" of admittance to Coalition military training facilities when they weren't good enough before. Admitting foreign nationals to American or British military training isn't simply done on merit, the main aspect is political. My point is that neither Iraqis nor their army have improved or changed to make this occurrence possible. What HAS changed is that Iraq is once again a British & American "Client-State", hence the re-appearance of Iraqis in western military training establishments. It's not some quality improvement that admits Iraqis. I'm sure that your former trainee already had it in him to do Ranger School. It's politics that actually got him there. Mike. 7. Crap idea. I'd sooner have 10 folk making an informed decision than 1,000 folk just making electoral noise. You're going to have folk voting simply to try & win the money. It's the same as fining folk for not voting. It'll only cause folk to turn up to vote simply for the sake of voting, rather than attempting to make an informed choice. That said, I am somewhat confused by the whole "voter registration" thing in America. In Britain, preparation of a list of voters is a local council / civil service responsibility rather than it being the responsibility of the individual to register. In effect, a salaried "civil servant" & his department is responsible for preparing a list of electors for a particular area. Note; it's a non-political appointment. The list is prepared yearly, and you are entitled to vote in the area you are listed as living in on the day the electoral roll is prepared (usually 30th October). This is done by mailing every dwelling requiring "The Householder" to give the names of persons over 18 resident there on a given date (& persons who will be 18 within the next year with their date of birth). After that, if there's an election, then voters are mailed their card & notification of where they are entitled to vote. Additionally, the individual polling stations have a list of the electors entitled to vote there. Admittedly, it took some effort to set up initially (many years ago), but now it's just maintenance - who moves in, who moves out, who gets old enough & who dies. Mike. 8. Played against a computer! http://www.20q.net/ It did really well, until it wrongly guessed that Dubbie & Tony B'Liar was "A Cannibal"! Anyway, good for a brief time-waste. Mike. 9. Pub opening hours!!! Actually, I'm English (always a handy thing to be when you're out in the "former colonies" and somebody asks if you speak English) living in Scotland. Only I've now spent more than half my life in Scotland, so does that make me Scottish? I did try shouting: Och aye... The Noo... Grrr Grrr... English Bastards... Whaur's Ma Claymore... Braveheart... But it just didn't work. Still English. So now, when somebody asks me: Whit's an Englishman living in Scotland fer?" I just reply that: "My family has a long history of Colonial Service!" Which doesn't answer the sunburn enigma. My boys have "my" skin. Alasdair now looks like a Seminole Indian after an afternoon in the sun! Mike. 10. Strangely, we were far more comfortable in Az temperatures of 35-40C than Scotland's 25-29C. There's a lot of truth in the old "It's not the heat, it's the humidity" thing. As for sun angle, Az sun in May or September is higher than Scotland ANYTIME! Believe me, we weren't cowering indoors. Today (when Iona & Lauren burned), wasn't unlike a typical day when we were in Az, only it wasn't as "sticky" in Az. Another thing was that I didn't tan as well as in Az (being a former 'desert-dweller' I can turn black in a day - right before your eyes). This suggests to me that the sun just isn't as strong here. I wonder if it is a humidity thing - sweat not evaporating here as well as in a desert. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. 12. Yeah... It's that "time" of year again... "Summer" time (which in Scotland rarely lasts more than two hours 12 seconds including the sumer-time adjustment of 2 hours) Once again, Iona & my eldest daughter have sunburn. Yet... When they were in Arizona, they didn't burn!
  13. Like you (or any other regular here) are any different. In fairness, Kallend has always played the argument, not the person. He's one of the few here who both teaches & learns stuff on the forums. His posts are thoughtful, factual & mostly accurate. He is willing to change his view in the face of the information presented rather than sticking to a favoured opinion. When he DOES let his temper show, it's generally for good reason. Can this go into The Bonfire now? Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode.
  14. No offence, but I'm unsure whether to call this grossly racist or short-memoried! Prior to Iraq's 1990 invasion of Kuwait, Iraqis routinely went through RMA Sandhurst, & RAF College Cranwell along with other places to train on British military equipment & doctrine. On the day of their Kuwait invasion there were even a couple at Dartmouth! Prior to 1979, Iranians were a fairly common sight at your Ranger School. Omanis, Iraqis, and (back in the pre Gaddafi days) Lybians were common sights at ANY British higher learning institute, whether it was military or civilian-industrial. It's actually a "Client-State" thing. Since their government is now friends with us again (read obedient & buying our weapons), then selected officers & the occasional NCO will train in the US or Britain. I'm sure that before long we'll also see them on our university campuses studying civil engineering & similar. Just like they were prior to 1990. Mike. 15. Good point! Maybe the Iranian Government should hire the NRA as consultants & lobbyists for their Atomic Weapons Program? "A (Nuclear) armed world is a polite world"!!? OK... There may be the occasional person who goes rogue with an A-Bomb, but they're hardly representative of the vast majority of responsible bomb owners who confine their activities to the range deserts & handy Pacific islands. They NEED this stuff for home & personal defence and shouldn't be denied such a basic right because of the whinging liberal gun conservative bomb control freaks. Yeah... Thinking about it, every NRA argument scales up perfectly into a Nuclear Deterrent argument. After all, these are legitimate governments we're talking about, not 5-year-olds. Mike. 16. Perhaps the subtlety of This Message is too much for me.
  17. .... a sort of Popeye-esque homicide by wound-up uppercut to the jaw... ... Bluto soaring off into the distance in a parabola... I *had* imagined some gun-crazed, ageing politician with poor eyesight blasting away at hang-gliders thinking he was shooting duck... But that image tends to send this thread back towards Texas. 18. One small point on this discussion... Surely "Homicides" don't SOAR... They'd sort of...FLOP! Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. Prenait la pisse hors du FrançaisCanadiens méridionaux puisqu'avant lui à la mode.

  20. Yeah... The "Bullying" on energy (gas) prices seemed to leave Russia a little confused. Look at it from their POV. They are expected to operate as a market economy, but are criticised for wanting market price for the gas they export! If you were selling something, and the buyer was being nice to you, you might be tempted to give them a discount, yeah? But if a buyer was being an unpleasant, obnoxious, rude, demanding pain, who deliberately insults you, then he'd pay the "sticker price", wouldn't he? And if you and the buyer can't agree on the price, then you don't sell, do you. Isn't that how a market economy works? THat's how Russia sells its gas. Mike. 21. Yeah... The Army of any country, and most particularly the infantry, tends to be regarded as the "Cinderella-Service" since it lacks the glamourous toys. All too often it is REPEATELY forgotten that to control territory, you need "boots-on-the-ground". Specifically, scruffy infantry boots. After all the fireworks of the air force, artillery, tanks etc... have come and gone, it's infantry who actually move in and "take" the objective. Because of this, the "proper" view should be that all other arms exist to support the infantry. The attitude SHOULD be: "What does the infantry want & how do we give them it?" This showed up best during 1944-5 when the allied air forced adopted the "Cab-Rank" system of ground attack adn exists now with The US Marines with their attached armour & air assets dedicated through FACs. Unfortunately, those with the "shiniest toys" tend to forget this. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable. 22. And the negotiations for Saddam withdrawing from Kuwait would still be going on. Meanwhile, Al Quaeda would have attacked America for NOT intervening (& thus siding with Iraq). Osama is a radical Muslim. He hates "unbelievers". He wants to exterminate infidels and ensure the "Victory of Islam". There was no way he'd view Britain & America as doing what's right so it was a classic case of "Damned if you do and damned if you don't". In effect, there would have been no change. Mike. 23. Haven't we been here before? More than once!!? So... To recap (yet again): 1. The way in which the figures has changed. 2. "Homicide" is defined in British law as: "The taking of another, self existent, human life." As such it includes murder, manslaughter, culpable homicide & casual homicide. If you kill someone else in Britain, that is a homicide. Whether it's deliberate, accidental, and even if your were carrying out a lawful activity in a proper manner. The figures have precisely FUCK-ALL to do with changes to gun legislation. I suspect that were gun legislation to go to a referendum, the popular vote would be for either no change, or less guns. It's a fact of the modern British culture. get used to it. Mike. Taking the piss out of the FrenchAmericans since before it was fashionable.
