That's the thing. Hezb'Allah isn't simply a "Terrorist Organisation". Like Hamas, they have a political wing which provides amenities such as hospitals & schools in the area. The Lebanese and Palestinians didn't vote for Hezb'Allah & Hamas respectively as "The Gun-Totin'-Looney-party". They voted the guys who'd built their new school / clinic / fire station. The current failing of Hamas, having won the Palestinian Government elections was that the "fighting" tail still wags the "political" dog (so to speak). As such, given that Hamas was incapable of responsible government, Israel's reaction is both understandable and justified. Lebanon is a completley different case. Hamas has some power in local government, but little in national government. Lebanon's problem is that they've JUST managed to get rid of Syria and their own military & internal security is barely forming. I believe that "The Cedar Revolution" in which Lebanon finally gained real independence is less than a year old! Surely the answer to Lebanon's incapacity to govern Southern Lebanon now that Syria has withdrawn it's troops is ASSISTANCE to that region, NOT bombing the infrastructure and mortaring refugee convoys! I'm proposing that since partition has proven to be such a stupid idea (Korea, Vietnam, Cyprus, India, Persia, Ireland, Germany) that we should look for a resolution to this. The only countries to have overcome violence resulting from partition are those countries which have successfully re-unified. The most successful of these was Germany... Where the "German Democratic Republic" ceased to exist. No-one died because of re-unification... Like, arguably, the re-unification of Vietnam ended the war & brought peace to that country. So... Couldn't Israel & Palestine somehow re-unify? They are very close culturally & historically. In fact the only thing which seperates them is religion, and that less so than, say, Sunni & Shia in Iraq. What would such a re-unified state be called (if it matters)? Would it be logically called "Greater Israel?... Or Palestine? Such a re-unification, say under South African Mandate could very well produce a secular unified state within a generation. The median Israeli or Palestinian really isn't all that religious. IF you know a better plan for peace there, one which doesn't involve the extermination of one side or the other, then tell me. Mike. Then: TRUE or FALSE: After each war in the 1960's to 1980's, Israel expanded it's borders, in most cases again evicting the indigenous non-Jewish people, but in those cases where they did not, acting as an occupying force (reminiscent of Nazi Germany within the Polish Ghettos), treating the indigenous non-Jews as "Untermenschen" with an intolerable quality of life. And: TRUE or FALSE: Throughout all it's dealings with it's neighbours and those it has occupied, Israel has always only acted in Israel's interests without thought of what is fair & reasonable, on the basis that "Might is Right, so fuck you'se". During the initial war in afghanistan a US pilot dropped a precision-guided bomb on Canadian troops in a known coalition training area. Unless you would suggest that US pilots would deliberately murder Canadian troops I think it has to be considered that even with modern technology accidents like this can happen. Would it not be better to allow Isreal the benefit of the doubt pending an investigation? I could only speculate: 1. Was there something in particular that the UN Observation post was likely to observe? 2. Stalls & stymies the Rome conference which was ongoing at the time? 3. Inhibits the formation of a UN Force to enforce peace & give Israel more time to gain it's own objectives (Decimation of Hezb'Allah; Scorched-Earth DMZ in Southern Lebanon)? Having said that, I really believe that the current Israeli Government is incompetent, vicious, inhumane, and has ultimately damaged world stability quite seriously! Even Al Quaeda has come out of the woodwork & ridden some free publicity!
