  1. agree!! if someone wants to buy supplemental private coverage that also includes cosmetics they sure can....bet it would be expensive (though it still doesn't address a cosmetic procedure that is rationalized by a false claim to insurance under a medical justification. example - removing an unsightly, but completely harmless, mole is cosmetic, but if the doctor creates additional work to send that tissue to a lab for a cancer screening (just in case), suddenly it's all covered. and costs more due to the lab work adder.) ... 2. normally? 99.99% of the time? these are just regular busy bodies. You keep eating bacon, they leave so you don't call the cops. They piss and moan about "kids these days". They won't be your friend and you get dirty looks and won't get to date their daughters... 0.01% of the time? these guys are nutbag fanatics (yes, there are counterparts in other religions, enviro-freaks, feminists, etc) and they find you in a dark alley someday and hurt you bad. good idea to know the people you are mucking with - most of time it's harmless ... 3. Of course it's situational - but: 1 - "I don't completely agree with it" Cops are under no obligation to wait until they get shot before returning fire. They 'should' get the safety margin and benefit of protecting themselves. I don't see a disagreement, this isn't the movies and a quick draw scene. There is a point where that 'threatening move' reaches a point of no return where the suspects action, if it would be a real threat of injury or death, will be beyond a safe response. The cop must fire. Sometimes, this occurs before the intent of a stupid move can be clearly known. 2 - "If you get a nervous cop pointing a gun at a suspect" - Just because they fire at someone making a potentially life threatening move, doesn't mean the the cop is nervous. He might be....but, he might also be in complete control and making a very clear and rational decision in that particular scenario. I'd rather have rational and calm cops that are ready and capable of taking immediate action to protect themselves and others RATHER than overly sensitive types that tie themselves into emotional, indecisive knots trying to relate to any nuances that are hard to decipher after the fact, let alone at the time. Hold still, do what they say at the time. IF they abuse their position, there will time to deal with that legally and later, while still alive. This post is a digression from the thread, just thoughts on Joe's couple of comments. I see those flavor of comments a lot. ... 6. And you still blaming the family? there is a scenario where they are both telling the truth (though I doubt it - I'm very suspicious of a the server just having a petty chip on her shoulder). anyway - typical family of 3 and another family of three order similar or identical meals. Get the same amount billed at about the same time. It's not that far fetched - most people have similar eating habits in terms of how they structure a restaurant selection. And more likely the more restrictive the menu is - or if they have specials like (one entree, drink, appetizer, dessert for $X) or the like....... ... 7. no, this applies to some degree to huge segment of the population (if I stated it in a more measured way) and people are decent. it depends on your truly felt perspective - they absolutely believe in the utter helplessness of people and they want to care for them that's good intentions and I admire it -I just don't agree with the degree they take or the basis for why they think it's right. If I acted as they wish, I'd feel horrible for my arrogance and mistreatment I'm creating. BUT - I don't think they are doing it out of arrogance, or that they feel they are mistreating and underestimating people. That's just a strawman and projection. two people can do the exact same things for completely different reasons - that's why funjumpers' typical tirades are completely a waste of time - and why his original post here was actually pretty decent in comparison - looking for clarity, not bashing. until the bashing started later anyway in the end, intentions don't matter - just effectiveness and results need to be seen to validate who was right, or to what degree each was right in the correct mix. it's why the high level debate is so difficult - one group - taking care of the populace past a certain debated line is needed and compassionate and the 'right thing to do' the other group - taking care of the populace past that line is crippling and cruel and disrespectful and clearly the 'wrong thing to do' both sides have good intentions - but neither group is willing to acknowledge that.....are they? 9. I like your Venn diagram. But, anecdote here, so meaningless. My brother in law is a caring and intelligent guy. Super nice, empathic and so far left it's ridiculous. He's a teacher. If he drew that Venn diagram, the 'enabling' space would be non-existent. He is very adamant that most people have zero chance, zero control, over their lives. They are helpless to change their lives. I wonder if he actually tells his kids that to their faces. this is how many people actually think - everybody is incapable, stupid, and almost like livestock and they want to care for them like they would a pet. The intentions are great, but I just can't help but think more highly of my fellow man. The very basic premise is what's different, not the intentions. ... 10. how selfish of you to choose where to give your charity as an individual you need to stop those activities and immediately offer your time and effort directly to the US government - they'll tell you how to exactly give of yourself. I think we need a law to force people to do their charity against a government issued time table and schedule. Government knows best. People shouldn't be allowed to do charity based on their personal inclinations - what a waste. ... 14. Interesting - though the big argument in favor of a law enforced 'system' that is completely friendly to abuse and overspending uses the argument that if they weren't so far biased, people would 'fall through the cracks'. You see that argument here. Frankly, it's pretty much the only argument here - "what about this scenario", "I know a guy that", "once I was in a situation". That's exactly what these anecdotal type examples are that pols rely on also - 99.9999% of the time. So this particular system is design to eliminate voluntary charity and take it all on itself - rather than working with it and allowing it to take a major role in social consciousness. therefore my cynicism stands - the final and truly fundamental argument remains that private charity is clearly a very selfish and biased act. And even an act of defiance. for the children the only way for charity to be temporary (i.e., the taker recovers and resumes self reliance) is for it to be personal and direct - with the giver and the taker to be face to face and it's done out of goodness and caring, and respect and appreciation. If it's anonymous, resentment will certainly develop in both. And it'll also become permanent for the taker. That hurts both parties as well. Anonymity sucks pretty much in everything because of how people are wired. It destroys mutual respect. if it's so bad that we have threads like a typical speaker's corner thread, imagine how bad it becomes when money is involved. ... 16. NO NO NO!!!! That's not the way it's supposed to be done. Funjumper doesn't want greedy people like your RWC congregation decided to help people. You must be FORCED to help in the way funjumper wants you to. You're being your brother's helper. That's not nearly the same as "brother's keeper." It's incredibly selfish - the government should decide where that food should have been given. Not the people themselves. They must hate children and puppies. Those 250 families should get in line with all the other starving families and not be given favored status by a church just because they look like the church members. Clearly that church must only serve white meat and white milk - if you know what I mean. Private charity is selfish - those donations should go straight to the US Treasury for 'perfect' disbursement. for the children (I'm practicing the 'talk', how'd I do?) ... 17. the nice thing about Goodkind's books - when he goes on his preachy self righteous political rants, once you read it in the first couple books, you can see it coming in later books and just skip forward 10 pages to get back to the story - because it's the same message again. (this from someone that resonates with his message - but he uses a lot of useless filler in his writing). AND - he finished the freaking series. now he's 3 books into continuing it more? (and the filler material thing is getting worse, not better) "people are quicker/ready to believe that their worst fears are coming true even if it's not happening, and will react accordingly" and other variations of the same thing ... 19. "Many more" - so what do your stats say is "many more" 2 to 1? 3 to 1? 10 to 1? what is the real number? how do you find the number of 'prevented' crimes too for that matter? I think it would be easier to get an official stat of just what activists pretend that ratio is or what they assume it is. in my house the ratio is zero divided by zero - so I guess you can pretend it's any number you like. regardless of the ratio, irresponsible owners (any amount) are real problems and should be addressed directly and immediately. and those actions should take place that don't affect responsible owners. ... 20. Don't forget the restaurant owner is getting a lot of business and press from this too and likely escalated the original press to keep it going. Clearly the Dan comment: - family intent - "they told us a dude was serving us, you're not a dude, hahahah" overly sensitive server takes it wrong - "hahahahaha - you look like a dude. and we're mindreaders and can 'just tell' you're gay - that must be why you look like a dude - hahahaha at you" I visualize the scenario - an overly sensitive server is put off by the "Dan" comment and takes it not as intended. She JUMPS to her stereotype of what she 'thinks' they are and just fills in the blanks on her petty little scenario. I hope she didn't muck with their food too. The restaurant is serving shoulder chips apparently. She's really putting a horrible face on a social cause that needs natural movement and quiet, sincere acceptance - not angry and petty and contrived confrontation. 24. It's BS because North Dakota which borders Minnesota on the West is having an oil and gas boom leading to 1. A 3% unemployment rate versus Minnesota's 5.1% 2. 22,000 more jobs than people 3. 22 year old children with no experience getting jobs paying $100K/year I'll refrain from mentioning that correlation does not imply causality, just like the New York Times opinion piece neglected that key point. FIFY If a significant oil/gas deposit was found near the Twin Cities, 7 people would protest the environmental impact (prior to any complete and objective impact study would even be done) and the legislature would quickly mobilize to squash any development effort through new laws. The owner would still have his property taxes increased due to the land value change, but he wouldn't be allowed to develop the deposit. Within a year, he'd be forced to erect a wind farm instead. Somehow, excessive taxes on the citizens would be added to subsidize the wind farm - though the property owner would see none of it. It would then quickly lose money on a regular basis. this would be claimed as a huge victory. Court cases would quickly be filed to protest the wind farm because the blades occasionally kill pigeons, and endangered mosquito species. Finally, an increase in sales tax would fund 22% of a light rail line to the wind farm. It would only cost $20M/year to operate, but the 4 people that ride it twice a year will be interviewed on local news shows to state how great a success it is for the children and the economy. (Unless the deposit was on publicly owned lands - at which point development would happen immediately, no profits would be announced such that a tax increase would be needed to develop it. and all the legislators would be driving luxury cars) ...
