  1. Quote***I have heard him speak . . . I . . . cannot understand . . . this guy . . . is intelligent . . . ] Sorry to practice on you. Just practicing for a job on the Times. The alternative was to falsely accused you in the reference post of slamming Arnold just because he has an accent and then call you racist as a result (I know you're not). But that would have been good enough for the Times also (NY or LA) ... 2. This whole thread is about being color blind. A great thing I'd like to teach my daughter and a thing my generation tries to do but aren't allowed most of the time. I think each generation is better than the last here despite all the mistakes of Affirmative Action, lumping groups, counting etc. Funny, my impression here is people are completely 180 degrees out of sync with their positions on Prop 54. ... 6. I treat it as 3 different things: Faith (belief without fact, by definition) Religion (rituals and practice to express Faith) Church (organized structure to administer Religion) I'm not religious or even faithful, I like facts. But faith can bring out the best and worst in people. So if it helps someone deal with their fears or life or even the simple things, more power to them. The real problems are a result of the power structures which come with the 3rd item. ... 8. You get to pick your friends, no choice on family. So the whole brotherhood thing is more poignant. However: Family - You have a common bond and you have to be with these people. You may not like them or you might, but you spend so much time with them that you "know" them so even if they are freaks, you still love them a little and feel responsible for each other. And those you really connect with, well those are the people you'd do most anything for. That sounds like skydiving and not like any other sport. In a small DZ, this is pretty common. The big DZs? I suspect it's diluted quite a bit. I'm originally from a very small DZ, so I have the 'family' thing with skydivers in spades. ... 10. Quote>Things fall at 32fps on the earth - fact. reply] I know what you meant to say, but since this is about facts and perception of reality and learning as absolute facts vs perception, you want to take another look at this one. Including significant figures, the units being ft/s/s not ft/s, assumptions on tidal distortions, elevation, etc. Or else someone with bite on this harmless example and try to reduce that list of what you consider absolute. The point being is your point. Which is well taken. If someone knows there is an absolute fact, but has his perspective of that fact incorrect, he could really make some bad subjective judgement calls because his basis is flawed. In this example, thing fall at "32 fps" might result in you not opening you parachute in time since you actually made it to 120 or 150 or 180 mph during your jump. Extend this line of thought to political judgements.... ... 11. I think that the person who has to make the most athletic and precise exit move most of the time was the IC. Placement mostly and everyone keys on this person And then point and OC - timing and relative placement Tail gets to contribute hugely to how the entire group is placed. (I've flown IC, OC and Point, but not tail yet except for a brief stint in Coolidge in 1990 on a team) relative placement For OC specifically (my current slot), I'm learning about placing myself relative to the IC (he has the count). it's doing tremendous things for my contribution in helping the formation stay solid right off the plane. Example, the Can Tee needs the IC to hip out and DOWN. I can help this by hesitating and not leaving the plane until I guarantee the IC has his hips cleared. This lets him stay below me and my placement is so much easier. For any launch visualize what you want the 4-way to look like right out the door and recognize that the inside people also have to move farther, then time it out and also put yourself in the air where you saw yourself during the mental picture. This might not be right, but it's doing wonders for us right now. I'm hoping formal coaching will help me understand better why some of this is working so well. Then we can refine our techniques to concentrate on just those components that are necessary. I've gotten some of the best NSL coaching for exits from Robert Chromey (sp?) at local meets. If you get the chance, he's very clear about about where everybody needs to end up - super cool guy also. Also, the GK training video has all the launches, look at the little stuff for timing and placement. Very cool stuff. ... 13. OK - with a few stupid exceptions, this has been the best, most courteous thread on one of the big subjects on this forum. The name callers and hotheads seem to have left and the discourse is reasoned and highlights the real issues in political disagreements. A difference in the underlying base assumptions and how it drives our opinions. Root cause theory at work. I've started avoiding these or, even worse, stoking the fires because of the crappy back and forths. But this one, I'll keep reading. Thanks, guys ... 19. Still doesn't mean hollywood is all about republicans, just that (extremely) small group with asperations to go and do something rather than just protest against whatever is popular. It just means the actors that are Republican have more conscience and intelligence and realism in their makeup than their other whiney lib counterparts. Or, their other whiney liberal (self-important closet aristocrat) counterparts have ostrasized them because of their politics and running for office is a natural place to go since they are popular and visible......... 22. Reagan, maybe Arnold soon. I don't follow local politics. Was Gopher (Love Boat) and Sonny Bono rebublicans? BUT, I'd love to see CONGRESSMAN Dennis Miller (R) in a debate with another rep or senator. That would be rich. I do think Reagan did much more good than harm and was likely the best president in a very long time. I'll be as vague as JT on this statement. I also agree that I'd much rather keep seeing Robin Williams in serious movie roles than any of the republican actors trying out for public office. I didn't like any movie I've seen with Reagan yet. But do ya really think hollywood is all about republicans? That's really interesting. ... 25. Hey, nice One of my favorite persons at our Dropzone is very cool and independent. One of the things I admire about him is how he handles conversations. When anyone starts to talk about someone not present - and it's in a negative way - this person doesn't argue, contribute, fight it or anything. They just walk away and find another group to hang with. When the trash is done, he may come back or may not. I'm trying very hard to emulate that example. Since people like to gripe and it's normal habit, I'm finding this a pretty good trick and harder than you might imagine. Much of the time, you find yourself hanging alone while the entire DZ gets it out of its system(s). ...
