  2. nope, both seem to be "terroristic threats" at least, in today's context of escalatory use of hotbutton words ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  4. what I think is really fun, is there could be a thread on the exact same issue posted next week, except instead of Pelosi, it'll be some Republican senator - and most of the posts will be exactly the same, only the players reversed. Maybe with more Lucky sprayed in. Maybe 3 or 4 here that just think it's nuts both ways. In the meantime - if $5M is a nit, then I'd like to have it. I think I can make better use of it. ... 5. I believe the gambit in any debate for a lefty is to point out that $4M CEO salaries is a minor thing we shouldn't fret over. We should all be guilty of not arguing every single post about the much larger budget item "military spending" therefore, all spending of any other kind is fine ... 7. that's the real point - it doesn't matter if it's true or not - the partisanship knee jerk reaction is for people to automatically support this with whatever hairbrained excuse they can come up with ... 8. nice gambit, but so completely overused and wrong same people using that argument also complain about $2M bonus going to CEOs on banks and car companies - consider Pelosi as another executive and you can see the hypocrisy in playing that card ... 9. I think it should ALWAYS be ok to run down and restrain the criminal. However, the level of force needed to accomplish that aim is the real question. Depending upon the ability of the pursuer to restrain the criminal vs the amount of resistance the criminal puts up. A huge Father with SEAL training could restrain some punk with little damage to the punk - no matter how hard the punk resists. He should not damage the punk, he has special training in this. however, a 'normal' father with little martial training subduing the same punk might have to hit the kid on the head to restrain him. that would be justified - the father is under no obligation to take damage if he chooses to try and hold a criminal for law enforcement arrival. Cops are under no obligation to go toe to toe, no reason for civilians to either. so if a pursuer atttemps to do the minimum of damage allowed by his ability for the scenario, then any damage the criminal takes is purely the fault of the criminal (that's true with the cops, that's true with the father) Edit: establishing a law that says one cannot pursue no matter what is a travesty, no law can anticipate all scenarios to that restriction. Even in most cases, not restraining or not pursuing is likely the wisest course ... 10. that's nicely considered I think that drawing the line in terms of immediacy is a good way to predetermine where it gets subjective immediate/justified - in the house, starting the motion to definitely knife your child's throat not immediate/not justified - "a few years later they are released from prison" so those two lines are easy to draw and likely 99% of the reasonable population would agree (though some here I could see arguing to let the criminal cut the child and then give the criminal a hug and a government check - conversely, I could see a couple people argue to invade the prison and then kill the criminal in a fit of rage.... but we'll ignore that 1%) but those lines are pretty widely spaced...... grey area - running away from the house (in this specific case, I can think of several scenarios where it's justified, and several where it's not - you think the father went too far, I don't have enough details to form a personal opinion yet) ... 11. Right to pursue - 2 scenarios Criminal runs, clearly scared to death, maybe just a kid on a random break in. Criminal backs out, angry eyes, vows to "come back and mess you up" In both cases, if they get away, you are pretty sure that the cops won't find them and you'll not have a better chance to stop them yourself as right now. Why are these two cases considered the same under law? They are both out of the house and retreating. Case 1? I'm not too concerned. He'll find easier targets - I may or may not be obligated to a moral duty to protect other future victims. Case 2? I'm scared to death for my safety and that of my family. ... 12. aye, that's the rub and in line with my discussion - can the victim legitimately indicate that he remain's "in fear of harm" as a result of the criminal escaping? Then absolutely the victim should be allowed to pursue, maybe he's even obligated to (morally). it's one reason why I have issue with laws that try to restrict self defense only within your own home - one should be able to defend themselves with the proper justification. but not everyone has good judgement in that area so the laws tie everybodies' hands a bit to constrain the nutters it's so completely situational, that a general law is pointless ... 13. So how many of the "no" votes are real and not just trollery? What if I "flourish" my knife while cutting vegetables and it accidently scares a peeping tom? Is that ok? Am I allowed to butter bread inside my home? ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants
  14. I don't see how this is "beyond self defense". One would definitely fear for the safety of their family knowing these guys got away. So what if they are fleeing now........ My issue is that they did it once, and very likely would return at a later time to attack the family again when the father wasn't as prepared. This is completely about the confidence in law enforcement to either catch the guys before they come back, or law enforcement's ability to protect the family in the meantime. Both items I would have serious concern about them being willing to do, let alone able to do. Especially when criminal's rights seem to trump victim's rights lately. Without that confidence, then fear of the criminals returning is legitimate - thus pursuing them now (one's only opportunity) is a very logical conclusion justifiable in protecting oneself and one's family. So the real question is ---- how do we separate this line of logic from mere vigilante attitudes that would manifest themselves in the same actions....... ... 15. Brad's a great coach. You'll be very happy. hard to go wrong with any of the crew, though. (Agree with the comments on Rusty - he taught my second mantis camp in Orlando SV and I learned so much that camp. No we're doing a big camp in Mar in SVCO. We've done half a dozen camps there and every single time we've been so thrilled with our treatment and the coaches and the front staff.) This is pretty rare -> I'm yet to meet a single employee there that I'd say anything remotely negative about in terms of competence or service. It's really a top notch operation.) ... 16. I don't see why a blanket clause wouldn't just do the trick. Then, when we realize that treating everybody the same is even more cost prohibitive, we can then go about eliminating some pointless benefits associated with all type of legal, personal partnering. Effectively eliminating a two special interest groups - those with partners and single people - and start treating everyone as individuals as far as the government is concerned. ... supplex or nylon (cotton wears too fast and it's pretty rare for anyone to fool themselves that skin friction supplex vs cotton is a real drag affect) though 90% of people would use supplex (a form of nylon) - the 'slippery' nylong pretty much for the floaters only ... Pretty much 3 for 3 so far on advice....... Make sure someone VERY up to speed checks the fit (with gear on and in your jumping clothes and shoes) gotta make sure the booties fit right (not too loose) - one can search threads here to figure it out - from my wife's website on fit (we had to add this as we've actually had more than one new jumper put their new suit on, without shoes, bend forward at the waist and look down at the booties and say "Hey, this looks too loose" ): Checking the Fit of Your Booties If you have purchased an RW suit with booties here is how to check the fit of the booties. Put the suit on with the shoes you wear while skydiving. You should be able to put your suit on while wearing your shoes, pulling the bootie over the toe of your shoes after you have the suit on may tear the foot cup. Make sure your foot is all the way forward into the foot cup. Your booties will look loose while standing straight up, as will the torso (remember you will use this while arching, not while standing and looking down). Putting on a rig will help ensure the booties fit correctly. Lay down on the floor and arch, the booties should tighten from knee to toe as you bend your leg toward 90degrees - point your toes to pull the bootie taut. If you can’t point your toes or your toes are being pulled down the booties are too tight. If your feet completely straighten out, then they are too long. The goal is with a good arch, and knees bent to not quite a right angle, you can point your toes to just past a right angle and the booties snap taut. Flying Your Booties If the fit is right and you are having troubles with them in freefall you may need to adjust your body position and put some downward pressure in the toes, you should try to feel a lot more pressure from the new booties than you are used to without booties. If you don’t press on the air, then your booties might flap or feel loose, they need to catch the air smoothly (like a boat sail) and stay pressurized, keep them in the wind and resist bending your knees and “hiding” them from the air above your thighs. Avoid “bouncing” them in and out of the air stream (happy feet), press on the air (straighten the knees slightly more) and hold them in the wind. It’ll take more than one jump to get the hang of the booties if you haven’t jumped with booties before. Fly the booties don’t let them fly you! ... 22. pretty elegantly said right there Except the topic was about every human life, not a special one which a family member clearly is to each observer. see in blue like a lot of debates, people have different views when it's personal vs someone else - I appreciate his ability to see that any person in the entire population is 'personal' to someone else out there - so applying our 'personal' opinions as a general position (or having the strength to accept our general opinions in our personal life) is the least hypocritical position one can take it's one thing that amazes me here is that lots of people have two positions on everything, but can't admit it ...
