Is it Ethical to Vacation in Haiti So Soon After the Quake?
rehmwa replied to Andy9o8's topic in Speakers Corner
Catherine Jones is a stupid tool. This is all about emotional reaction vs what's really practical and helpful. Absolutely ethical to continue your vacation there. It brings in money to local business, that helps their economy in a much better way than simple charity would. Likely those vacationers will spend more while there than they would donate. Why on earth would you take a culture shocked by a natural disaster, and then kick one of the main economic underpinnings (what little they have) out from under them? analogy - Your hourse burns down. Is it ethical for your employer to then fire you - for your own good? Some people just aren't happy unless 6 Billion other people also sit around outraged and depressed all the time over various tragedies. ... read the post --- "or you fight back with the minimum damage you can provide while still protecting yourself or others" so you state "only option" is to fight---then you fight I think one is required to stop attacks, not take retribution or "lose it" like idiots like to think is so cool. The stronger/more skilled you are, the less damage you should "have" to inflict than someone less capable. I think staying and stopping someone should also have the consideration that, "If I run, could they harm another in my absense" - one might have to stay to protect others even if one could personnaly bail. but a lot of these scenarios is about responding to verbal abuse with physicallity. That's just cowardly and shameful. Edit: notice that nowhere here do I differentiate by gender. Though I do credit two things that lead to our 'normal' morals on it. 1 - we have obligation to protect others less capable, 2 - we do the minimum we can to stay in control of the situation. That said, there are likely more men than women that are less able to protect themselves, but that isn't a blanket statement about how to treat all men or all women. here's an old quote I'll mangle here "Do not hurt, where holding is enough Do not wound, where hurting is enough Do not maim, where wounding is enough Kill not, where maiming is enough the greatest warrior is one that never has to kill" ... Actually, I've changed my mind. I find this reprehensible. It's a lot like someone putting a bumper sticker on my car without my permission. Hell, when I buy a car, it's a deal breaker if the dealer puts his dealership decal on the car. freedom of speech doesn't grant a company to deviate in any way from a build spec (including gratuitous messages) I wonder how many would switch positions if the manufacturer would be engraving messages about global warming - or mockery of GWB...... ... It's actually an idiotic point. The people of Mass voted in the Republican because Dems are out of control and pushing too fast, too hard, and too left (even for Mass). This guy is actually trying to make the position that they voted against a Dem because the agenda is moving too slow!!!! nuts That means the people of Mass want the process to accelerate and their main method of doing that is to remove the rubber stamp Senate? Boy - he really thinks the people of Mass are complete idiots, then. ... Wow, what a thread. Absolutely you treat a woman the same as a man in this case. You don't hit women, AND you don't hit men either. When defending yourself against an attack by either, you either leave if you can, or you fight back with the minimum damage you can provide while still protecting yourself or others. I'm more amazed at the 'tough guys' here talking about how they resort to violence for 'words'. I'm less amazed at statement of how they'd defend another, I would also (as described above) - but surprised at how they get emotional about it and the implication that they'd do more than the minimum necessary to diffuse the situation. Anyone that can't control themselves needs to learn to walk/run away for all situations. Or learn a martial art to a degree of proficiency that they can reduce their insecurity to the extent that they'll learn self control in situations of personal conflict. Even more important for those bigger and stronger than most. ... You got it nailed here, Paul. It's not so important that the supermajority is gone. Wish it were that easy. What's really happened now, is that now we have a bidding war to get thost couple of votes needed to swing the 60 count. And, do not doubt it, except for a couple fanatics, we'd see 100 people bidding for the highest payoff to get (or keep) that vote. We'll likely get a unanimous decision for healthcare as soon as every Senator negotiates that HIS state doesn't have to pay for it, just get it. Once every state doesn't have to pay, then it'll pass. ... Seriously, I hope the cancellation of the super-majority will just give all the Senators the balls to vote per their constituency. Now that they don't have a strangle hold, it might be less pressure to divide up on party lines and follow the orders of the party leadership - currently happening. I mean, seriously, if a single Dem votes against any aspect of the socialist agenda, he'd be thrashed. Now it's not as critical. Similar argument can be made on the other side of the aisle too, they don't have to toe the line as a group either so much. Edit: I can't take it, this will never happen. The only thing that might happen is that now the wheeling and dealing will increase as the left will now try to buy off individuals on the right and give even more sweetheart deals to special groups to ram the legislation through..... ... It's worse, not only doesn't he hear the message, he's rationalizing the current wrong road he's on by stating that this vote is "the people" telling us they are upset, not by the out of control slide to the left and the massive spending and idiotic project,....he's telling us this is a message that he didn't get health care fast enough. So, apparently, the people are so incensed about not getting gov health care fast enough, that they showed their anger (and stupidity) by voting out the fawning-rubber-stamp super majority..... ... I wouldn't use the word landslide - but it was a HUGE swing and the dems would be foolish to not take this as a big message about their spending agenda. ... I have an issue if a piece of equipment doesn't meet the spec. If the spec is performance based only, and this doesn't impact, then I'm ok if he carves little bunnies in it. If the spec includes surface finish, s/n format etc and this violates it, then I'm not ok with it. ... But is it significant in the context of how Mass citizens are voting? what was the normal margin of win for Kennedy in the last couple elections vs this - how much did the sentiment change? how big was the swing from previous expectations maybe we don't use the word "landslide" that's for presidential elections when one guy takes 49 of 50 states...... but "landslide" does reflect the sentiment of Massachusetts (sp)-for-gosh-sakes-so freakin-left-of-a-state voting in a guy like this you have to forgive them for not using the correct term, I mean, clearly they are fundamentalist wackos and you have to compensate for the IQ delta ...
