  1. which has nothing to do with Speaker's Corner which is: 1 - comprised of insulting delivery of 2 - one indoctrinated and subjective belief system vs other indoctrinated and subjective belief systems 3 - usually devoid of supporting evidence for the first rather 4 - comprised of juvenile bashing of the others based on outlyer anecdotes and extrapolation of each's true position to the ridiculous 5 - and occasionally reference diarhhea from biased sources 6 - spattered with non sequitor nonsense and vitriol which usually moves from a sprinkling to 95% of the discourse other than that, sure, it's great

  4. this is the ticket for today's canopies the old "keep it in 1/4 brakes through turbulence", I believe, is from when the canopy inlets weren't as dialed in as today's canopy and a bit of brakes was needed to keep the nose "open" or you'd lose a cell or two in turbulence. so the right answer is "it depends on the canopy my old Maverick? I'll hold a bit of brakes in turbulence My Stilettos? I'd rather have a lot of speed to cut through the yuck - let it fly and be ready to fly through any issues (just taking the slack from the steering lines would be the MAX I'd put in for no reason, but I don't even like that) IMO, YMMV, RSVP, PDQ ... Never do business with him again. agree - AND tell other dealers in the area about him (especially your local suit dealer who doesn't need this person as a customer, etc). Based only on the OP's post, this individual has cash flow problems, and emotional issues and impulse control issues. 9. As I noted, how does the police know this is a nuisance claim vs just a simpleton that communicates/processes poorly but really saw something? They have to investigate, even just the bare minimum of questioning the caller further to figure out of they really are a crank call or have something else substantial to add to the claim. I'm on your side if it's clear that the caller is making stuff up just for attention (good intentions or not). ... 11. This is a far cry from someone having a "vision". you skipped the following paragraph, on purpose? {snarky} vision = sees something {end of pointless snarky} absolutely, but someone "not quite right" might just not process it the same as you or me. Doesn't mean they didn't see something (in a real sense). So how do the cops know what to ignore? If they claim to by psychic, they are likely off kilter anyway - like religious people, or environmentalists, or CrW advocates. They pretty much are "just looking" for means to rationalize their POV. Practical analogy - Kallend drives through an area full of wires, his radio is working fine. One day, at a specific area, he notices the radio is wonky in a way that only a physicist can decode. He looks around, then calls the local utility and tells them the transformer on the corner of _____ and _____ is overheating and a danger. He didn't measure anything directly, but he observed "something". Should the utility investigate? or should they mock him. ... 12. I like the discussions and appreciate the deep dives. As long as we don't lose those that don't get the basic bits in the first place. Those that really dig into the details "get it" already. I'm not worried about Kallend or Winsor opening on top of me. But because of this type of thread, I now have a bunch of other people that I'm not worried as much about much as I would have been - that's a win. ... 14. OMG. And here I thought I was the only one in the world who had to address that with a "highly-experienced" jumper. Unbelievable. He even went so far as to say "pull the tail down so it catches more wind and you get more push". 15. Putting yourself into a flat spin has nothing to do with which direction the wind flows. Nice try. your airspeed is 30 in every direction, if you crank out a flat spin, sure, you will stall - regardless of whether you started out N, S, E, or W...... ... 16. YOU GOT IT!!! and yes, wind matters in base, because you are starting from a point fixed to the ground (where you feel the air) rather than a point fixed in an airmass where you are moving along with it. 19. Since we are not calculating orbital mechanics requiring precision to the 20th decimal place, then instead of complicating it for newbies to make ourselves feel smart, we should keep it basic. So the simplified chart is great - and yes, lot of 'standard' assumptions. I have issues with it only in the case when the assumptions are off. Example - lowers and uppers are in completely different directions. Cross wind or downwind jumpruns, high openings, etc etc etc. Mixed up exit orders (like FF before belly, etc). ... 21. What about someone who's a bit off? likes crystals, and reads a lot of books about psychics? They see something a little off kilter at the neighbors, maybe hear an argument, and then suddenly it's quiet for a few days. The neighbor digs a big hole in the middle of the night and buries something man-sized. The "psychic" sees all this but is stupid. Fortunately, her subconscious is a lot smarter and she has a dream about the neighbor killing someone and burying them in the back yard. She calls the cops about her "vision". People process stuff in strange ways. Most charlatans are very good observers and good at deduction. Add a little crazy, and a potential charlatans might very well believe they have special gifts. Edit: ooops, wrong thread. I'm a fan of cops that believe in science ... 22. I realize that airspeed is a constant. My disconnect is that during opening, the wind resistance on the canopy is greater than the resistance on just the body alone. At some point the canopy begins to pull the jumper forward at it's airspeed. It seems like wind into the nose would slow down the canopy relative to the jumper more than wind in the tail would. if you are falling in that airmass, at some point, the canopy "always" begins to pull forward and fly in the direction it's pointed as far as the canopy is concerned - the fact that the airmass and you are moving simultaneously east or west doesn't matter to the canopy while it's falling in that airmass If you are falling straight down (i.e., moving with the airmass you are in), then as far as the canopy is concerned, you are always starting at zero forward velocity in every direction you may choose to point. since you realize airspeed is relative, then that actually does clear up your disconnect - turning and facing "north" for example is absolutely meaningless in terms of opening performance here's your mistake - this is a moot point, the canopy and the body do not 'resist' the winds - they both ride along within it. Until you touch the ground, winds are meaningless in terms of performance in the air. They only matter in terms of how you travel relative to the ground Here's an exercise - It's a Totally cloudy day and you can't see the ground at all - there's a layer above you and you can't see the sun either - you are surrounded by grey.........You are under canopy.....tell me which direction the wind is blowing relative to you (easy, in my face, and it's the same no matter which way I'm pointing my canopy).....NOW, tell me which direction the wind is blowing relative to the ground (how did you figure that 2nd one out?). You can even have a compass. ... Driving is a one dimensional activity - a monkey can do it - being proud of your driving abilities is like being proud of being able to put on pants

  24. Well, climb angle will be better on an upwind climb. That could be a concern if there are noise abatement areas or restricted airspace nearby. and it's likely true at the moment of lift off and through the ground effect too..... I think it's pretty neat how many skydivers can't seem to differentiate in their heads the difference between how the breeze works between when they are not touching the ground (moving within an airmass) and when they are touching the ground (anchored). ...
