Since (I am inferring to make a point that )you are disregarding the point that horizontal separation at opening time is primary.... I'm going to let you answer that question by offering you two scenarios: you are in freefall and 200 feet away from impacting a deploying canopy, what do you do Johnny? what do you do? (and how much time do you have to make that decision - and, are you good enough to execute that decision) vs you are under canopy quite a bit after opening and pointing directly at another open canopy 200 feet away - (how much time do you have to make a decision?, and are you good enough to make eye contact with the other pilot, smile, wave, and gently turn your canopy away from him) let me know what you think (I might have made the point a bit obvious, but it's not obvious to some jumpers) edit: I'd give you a lot more credence in the discussion if, in the scenario with the freeflyers out first, you have a longer delay between groups to account for drift. 10s for belly first, 20s for headdown first I consider "freefly" to be any orientation, including back and belly - semantics.... ... The overconfidence of tunnel instructors

Paul - the discussion isn't about pre - AFF Students (tunnel is GREAT for that). It's about AFF Instructor Pre-requisite experience criteria. and it's a pretty decent discussion ... I really hate that. Ditto when they bring up the canopy sizes too. (within a fall rate - RW low open should go before RW high open, sure - is ok, better than criteria of group size IMO) I think an interesting poll is this one: two groups - 1 - a 4-way with sub 100 sqft canopies 2 - a 12- way with 170's and 190's who goes first? since both fall about the same, then it's not an issue of horizontal separation - so it's a within the type discussion I'd send out the 4 way since they can get down sooner and reduce the traffic in the pattern - Or at least position the 4-way such that they are positioned to land first with the least traffic issues (maybe 2nd or third out if that puts them directly over the top....) (I'm not a fan of biggest to smallest - I'm a fan of a uncluttered traffic) ... Agreed - slow first? - YUP - provided we're talking about "typical" winds aloft and jump run scenarios (uppers and lowers in the same direction, uppers blowing faster than lowers, jump run upwind). And I think this should be the assumption for JR's poll. if we have a cross wind or downwind jumprun, etc - then the discussion changes. But the rule to prioritize HORIZONTAL separation still needs to be the deciding factor ... The overconfidence of tunnel instructors
rehmwa replied to TunnelThrowaway's topic in Safety and Training
I don't like the thread title. Most tunnel instructors I know are a class act. (I don't know them all). At least they aren't any more or less arrogant than the AFFI's that i know. The fact that they are exploring the extent to which their training can translate to the sky is natural. Vetting it out is actually a good discussion. I think the arrogance thing is symptomatic to the sport in general. Our newer jumpers (time in sport) just seem to think they are entitled to move at a nutty pace, even though today's experience involves a lot LESS personal responsibility that it did even 15-20 years ago. I really had no issue at all with someone with 100 jumps that trained at a local DZ in the 80's doing a lot of teaching and jumpmastering static line. Today's 100 jump wonders just don't seem to be nearly the same caliber. Of course, it takes a lot less time to hit 100 now than then also. ... The overconfidence of tunnel instructors
rehmwa replied to TunnelThrowaway's topic in Safety and Training
I think a general allowance is a terrible idea. As noted, excellent body flying skills are just a small part of the ability to teach - though that seems to be argued here by a few as the only key point. The others comes from time in sport, exposure to all aspects of the sport, and certain personality types (at least for the good instructors) relating to coaching, communication, and empathy. This comes with good mentors and, simply, time-in-sport. (IMHO) As for very talented tunnel instructors that have been teaching in the tunnel environment for a long time, have the (of course) body flying skills, and have since put in a lot of time at the DZ to learn canopy and safety and gear and coaching, etc? Well, there's always that option to petition USPA for an exception on a case basis. I'd prefer that scenario to require some pretty substantial references from experienced instructors even. (for my part, I think the minimum criteria is way too low even now - exceptions to the minimums should be next to impossible. As for allowing tunnel time to credit in lieu of actual criteria - no way) And I say this knowing some excellent tunnel coaches. But the ones I really appreciate tend to be both tunnel experts, and skydivers. They really have the potential to bring the best of both worlds to the learning experience. One thing I really like about (good) tunnel coaches - they have an excellent understanding about the actual aerodynamics going on with their bodies. The benefit of being able to stay in an airflow for such a long time, is to really learn how the body and air interact. This is not so easy on skydives as in a tunnel with no other distractions and priorities. (edit: this isn't much of a concession, but I'd say that the first step of the recommendation should have been excepting this class of skydiver from Coach pre-reqs (pretty much can you dress yourself on days where you have a pulse). It's a much simpler discussion. That would then allow the debate to vet out the issues relating to teaching, canopy, safety, etc without the ego bits of any flying skills discussion - which really isn't the main concern here) ... But, this is BERKELEY (spelling here?) it appears they are using some sort of right wing set of "qualification standards" instead of just picking and choosing their students based on an artificially define mix of people based on shallow, cosmetic criteria. They've always been a terrible, right wing, fascist, racist institution and liberals everywhere need to converge on the place and educate them into the real world. I bet they hate puppies too. ... I recommend you search the forums for this topic. It comes up about monthly, there have to be about 50 threads on it. Scrub through and look at options on the suits - it's hard sometimes with everyone advertising a certain brand rather than just the suit design itself. Short answer - full size grippers, full set of grippers, double/triple layers, comfy fit (but not sloppy), material type has surface drag to consider. Last resort is gimmicks (but some people need them no matter what - swoop cords for example). Also tunnel time for technique, and talk to your suit maker and see what they recommend - if they don't get too fancy, then they are giving good advice - if they are, then they are scamming you for $$$ with gimmicky sounding "features". Remember, you have to be able to fly your body - you don't want a sloppy fitting suit throwing you around the sky. But there is only so much a suit fit can do for you. My wife makes something called the "Big John" for fast fallers (RW) - most suit makers likely have something that does the same job. For FF, she really leverages multi-layers in the legs and arms. ... As long as someone considers that flying skills alone are what makes a good AFFI, then that person is not ready to teach. I see that a LOT and it's frustrating. QuoteIf you read the link in the original post - and then page down in this link http://www.militarytour.com/reproductions/ww11/german/Flags/RGflagsrepo.htm you'll see the issue - and another thing however, I think anyone trying to take a couple letter "s" and also think lightning bolts are cool, would likely come up with an identical or similar design accidentally looks like an unfortunate mistake that people will freak out over I also suspect that most groups, upon being shown the comparison, would quickly change their logo what I don't like is the likelihood that no one mentioned it to those that owned that flag. the press likely went straight to mass publication and accusations. what could have been resolved in a few minutes as a misunderstanding, is now a huge international news story with the haters being all self congratulatory over their orgy of accusations against anything military not everyone in the world is a fanatical history buff ... It's in the subtext of the whole thing though. The fact the guy thought his gun was the solution to that particular problem says a lot about how he deals with life in general. I'm sure there is a faction of folks out there who think he's some kind of "hero" now because he put a few holes into a laptop. However, it's not parenting; it's childish. IF, in fact, the video is actually real. IS it? Or is it simply a great way to get hits on YouTube? Now, there's a point! Could it be just for 'hits'? Then too, it is on the internet! Seriously, THAT's what you took away here? Was it his accent or the hat that led you to this specific stereotype? Clearly that gun has been whispering in his ear the entire time, perhaps soaking toxins in through his pores. That horrible gun. He made a dramatic gesture. But I don't see it any different than if he threw it off a roof, or drove his car over it. He's sure not a hero in my book. He let it get to that point. He couldn't restrain himself to deal with it privately like a good dad. He raised a horrible daughter. The fact that there's a couple props in the video that some disagree with is completely not the point, it's the psychology of the dad and daughter that needs addressing. I'm very distressed about the chair, myself. Seriously, it wasn't even painted or anything. But I'm a bit of a chair-o-phobe edit: nevermind, Billvon beat me to it ...
